Well it's nice to see the MMO formula hasn't gone anywhere in the past 20 years.

Nick Rhodes What sucks is that the first big generation of mmo's, Ultima Online, Everquest, Asheron's Call, were NOTHING alike.
UO was a sandbox game, it had ZERO quest, ZERO. You could play how you want, good, bad, anything in between. There was no hand holding. Full open pvp, you lost everything on you when you died. It was also extremely social. non-instanced housing, player crafting focus (IE the majority of items you used were from player crafters, not "looted).
Asheron's call was story focused with insane monthly updates that actually changed the world and the story evolved visually each month, you'd read about a new "hive" ship appearing ove ra city and new creatures in the land, you' dlogin and actually SEE it in game. The world felt extremely dynamic and ever changing.
Everquest came and it is what laid the groundwork for the "formula" that WoW took it's main framework from. Theme-park world, quest focus, grind grind grind.
These days? Pretty much every mmo is stuck in the WoW formula.
Theme park linear worlds, heavy quest-focus, hotkey combat, it's old, it's repetitive, and a ton of people are freaking bored of it.
Nick Rhodes actually its evolved as much as you would expect a genre to evolve.
gyloir Yeah, being heavily into Asheron's Call 15 years ago or so ruined my expectations for MMO's. I enjoyed the first Guild Wars and City of Heroes, but yeah, completey bored and done with them now.

What's up with MMOs and making you fight rats/rat monsters at the start of the game? This some kind of inside joke and/or fetish?
Grimbanks 1st rule of MMORPG/RPG developing: "In the first quests there must be spiders and/or rats".

Grimbanks its just a thing to start out to get you into the game. Thats all, its annoying as hell but hey gotta learn the mechanics
Grimbanks The design thought behind it is to introduce you to the general concept that will be the foundation of all the quest to follow kill x amount of thing, give thing to person, collect x amount of the other thing. You strip it down to the components that everything else is built around in later quests so that at no point is the player not sure of what to do or confused later on in the game when that’s more of a problem. There are better ways to do it but this is the easy way. (I know your comment was a joke but hey the more you know.)
Download, install, play it for about 20 minutes, got bored, read about the weekly exp cap, uninstall.

Y- nZ It has a cap so that players won't grind away the same thing. There are so many other things that you can grind and get you "Prestige" aka Exp to a higher level. Most people in the game completely ignore what the game has to offer other that grinding 1 particular thing.. So the only way to avoid that is by putting a cap on it and grind something else. In the end you will know how to manage your grinding and also other things that you can do to become powerful. If you notice, most of the cry babies who complaint about the game are beginners and didn't spend enough time to see what the game has to offer.. This is an MMO.. not a single player game. So you don't get every everything and the whole end game stuffs right in the beginning ;)
Y- nZ There are a few ways to advance and people ignore a large part of the character advancement and just look at this "cap" on sparks. The issue with that is if they don't advance in the other ways at some point it won't really matter because they will never really reach that higher prestige. Given one-third (about 30 - 35% or so) of your prestige at high level comes from the alternative advancement it is kind of a large deal that they focus on that too. Sadly not a lot of people get it..
Kiran Alokkan You can make excuses for all i care, in the end, it's just another f2p gimmick. Look at Guild Wars 2, they don't have daily / weekly exp cap and still have waaaaay lot more to do than this game offers.
John Kiser When game offer something new, and "LOT" of people don't get it or turned down by it, it's not the "LOT" fault.
I have GW2. It's a wonderful MMO. But it's not a f2p. It should be bought first to play.
I spent around 100hrs in skyforge by now. The game is pretty good and becomes intense later on.

Hanif Ariffin Something with more diversity and action. I wouldn't put some god damn bosses with 10x healths than the previous one, quests would feel unique (like witcher 3) and look like they're connected to the game.
These quests are just ridiculously repetitive and useless.
SAO had an interesting system, it was grindy, but atleast there was some diversity, the fighting seemed original and you could win a boss fight by finding it's patterns and weaknesses.
This game? It asks of you to slightly walk left or right to dodge an attack taking ages to be thrown

So playing this game myself, It gets really boring after like 4 days. And you can pretty much master a class in a week if you actually try. I don't know how Joe feels about the combat, but it flat pisses me off. They give you a dodge feature, but a good chunk of attacks auto track to you, and the attacks that you would 'need' to dodge are so slow you may as well just walk away. You could actually just stand there beating the enemy in the face until you see they're ready to blow up a big attack and just move slightly. In fact, I've done it.
Joe mentioned Tera being very grindy, and that's true. But at the very least Tera made use of a dodge function. You didn't move, you got knocked down, knocked out and wrecked. You don't dodge here, you might get knocked down and meh. It's also weird that some attacks only affect minions. Like, the Cryomancers silence/freeze and Frost Fangs. It doesn't affect boss monsters even slightly. They don't slow down, they don't freeze, they're not even silenced. But they can still screw you over big time with mezmerizes, slows, knockdowns, silences, and etc.
Missions get really boring since you can pretty much just replay them repeatedly for an ever increasing amount of loot which will always throw you up node or two. After hearing about the Beta I got really excited, and then I realized it's actually pretty average. Some fights are pretty inventive, but they quickly get repetitive.
Can someone give me an MMO that is actually ABOVE average and not a grind fest?
Guild Wars 2 was good. Dont really know about other games.
I mean i love Final Fantasy A Realm Reborn, but that game is probably not for everyone.
TheBlackKnightGamer Though I don't think the combat is terrible, I hear your gripes man. I wish someone could make an MMO with the combat of a Dark Souls and the character creator of a Skyrim or Fallout.
I Also feel that the only way MMOs can avoid that stale, repetitive feeling, is for devs to fill these large worlds with more dynamic events and encounters. Unorthodox and unexpected events in the Open world (not just pvp) will keep people coming back..whether that be in groups or solo.

But soon it gets harder and you must micro manage your resources, health, allies.
And then there is the order system. You play as a god after all, so you get followers.
BoringMan Because mobas that usually have 4-5 skills are totally comparable to a mmo that often has dozens of them. You could have just as easily asked me if I played Fifa or Tomb Raider.

character creation is by far the best part of MMOs
I like the direction a lot of MMOs are going with being more aciton like and not clicking on who to attack, where to go, just using the mouse for eveything. I just hope there are more normal moves than one combo, and not just special moves with meter and cooldown. Melee press, hold melee, delay melee combo inputs, sprint attacks, dodge attacks, blocking + attack, etc. Makes the action feel more immersive outside of just casting spells every 10 seconds.
This is my fav vid of yours so far. I love this game but you make watching you play absolutely fun :)

Del is right. It's how MMOs are. But grind isn't the term for killing mobs. The grind is when you have no choice but to level by killing nothing but mobs. Like when quests give you paltry exp and you have to spend a hour or two just killing mobs to get to the next level. WoW has alot of grind and Korean games are known for being grindy. GW and GW2 were good because the quests gave you waaaayyyyy more exp then killing mobs so you didn't need to spend time killing mobs to level, unless you wanted to give yourself a lil push and save the quest XP. Skyforge doesn't have a xp system but rather uses the sparks system which are quest rewards to advance your character and a prestige system to unlock new areas outside of main story. That system though in itself can be grindy, having to do dungeons over and over again to get enough sparks to get the next node unlocked to gain better abilities and more prestige. That's a pretty good explanation of what grind means. Also alot of jrpgs are grindy as well.

This is EXACTLY what this game is. You have to kill the monsters in the map to get to the end of it and get a few nodes. Your statement is false for this game. Others, okay, true.
You don't have to. The "kill this many" is a side quest to get a few more sparks. In the larger stages you can just run through doing the more major quests or skip those and just do story quests. But yes if you want more sparks doing every quest is good.
Fuzzy Panda I really enjoyed reading this for some reason, I find many western RPGs to be intriguing with how they handle "grinding". Mass effect 2 had its god awful "planet exploration" mini-game.

Love Skyforge and tbh - the Open world zones (the one you didnt care for) are my favorites. Its esp cool that they beak down the entire map into discreet areas that let you run off & do what you want but remember you progress & let you leave & come back w/o having to start over. I know that the last are felt so grindy - but you can leave and come back weeks later and just pick up where you left off

Bruce Wayne Well, its not really a good match up, Superman outclasses him in pure physical and intellectual prowess by far. Well I am gonna quote my boyfriend to establish my argument.

So to sum this up, Thor logically and featwise wont have the chance of using his magic, he wont have the time, he will get ktfoed or maybe torn apart in an encounter with superman, the only way he will fight superman is by relying on superman's moral discretion, and still will get ktfoed.

I was playing Kotor last week and I thought it would be great if they made a Star Wars RPG (or any RPG really) that had the combat of KoA and the gunplay of Mass Effect. It would need some tweaking, but I think it could be fun.

its such a great mmo and a breath of fresh air in the genre, ive played wow for close to 11 years and every other AAA mmo that has come out over the years for a free to play and the fact its in beta, its doing ALOT of things right....and the fact it does not cater to the casual crowd thats destroying ever single game is amazing.
Im happy the casuals will jump in realize you need to actually advance your character to unlock the class you want sook and go "what i don't get everything for free with only 1 hour of played time this game is shit booo hooo" and leave is good for the games health.
Joel Puton Bahahah i have no idea what...back in your day actual is....because mine goes as far back a the first consoles...runscape, grall, vanilla wow and so on....if you find this game a...grindfest...thats all on you man this game is no where near a grind you want a massive grind go play wildstar baha....this is the best mmorpg on the market at the moment they are doing everything right and the company reminds me of what blizzard used to be back when they were not actiblizzard.....its hard to find a company who cares about there games and the community instead of money anymore.
Joel Puton Dude we both are not blind the gaming industry at the moment is in the shit big time....company s are in it just for the money they don't care about the actual content they are pushing out....but the fact that the classes are locked away through progression i actual love....yes some people will think its just a grind but the fact you only get 1 char and have to develop it to get your classes makes them feel like you actual achieved something which is cool....and ALOT of games these days have forgotten about that very aspect....you want people to play your content because its fun not because you get something out of it....this game does do that well you literally get what you put into the game, if you play shit all you get shit all reminds me of vanilla WOW lol.
but yes gaming in general is depressing as fuck at the moment :(
Logan ShadowHeart I'm all for grinding out what I want....but this game doesn't let me. I'm spark capped out and even on tuesday reset after I cap again I'll have to wait 7 more days before I can actually get where I want to be and I'm not even sure if I'll be able to play said class then because I might not have enough sparks to unlock any of the damn skills so that might be a 3-4 week period of time where I can't even progress in the game despite the fact I want too.
jaxxice 2 things how much are you playing??? XD because ive been doing nothing but spark runs all week for about 8 to 10 hours a day and u have never spark capped once :(.....also thats probs 1 thing i hate about the game i fukking cant stand any caps on resources, vanilla wow had it perfect where you could ligt pvp for 24 hours a day if you wanted to and still get somewhere.

dono....but I hit cap within two days, with the cap growing and doing harder content that should probably even out but even then by that point I wouldn't care. So I guess my major gripe is that sparks are uses for class skill unlocks, they advertise you being able to just switch between classes at will but no you can't I have a lightbinder and if I switch to pally or cryo I have 0 skills and if I focus on getting said skills I'm delaying progression towards the class/classes I want to have as well as progression on classes I already enjoy. That cap makes the advertised flexibility in the game nonexistent for a long ass time that is gated by capping resources. If they just make a new resource for the upper or lower atlas I think that would go a long way in helping.
I liked Skyforge, i liked how the combat made it so you didn't just have to stay still and throw spells with the eventual move a little to the right. I love how in many of the UPPER tier instances where you can easily die on ads if you and your team doesn't focus the right enemies or hurry to dash away after being sucked into and enemy who will explode and insta kill you if you don't quickly flee. I love how most bosses aren't tank and spank even in the lower tier of the game. I love how many different classes there are and the variation, you most likely won't see 2 classes which acts alike.

Jeremiah S alot of the classes has atleast one ability which can help others with doing damage or shielding them or stunning the oponents. And the support classes works differently as they really aren't healers but works more like Bards where they constantly buffs the team and do DOTs on the bosses

There are 2 types of areas : 1st - Dungeon (like the first one you completed) ; 2nd - Open (grind) Areas that you kill everything, it will take like 1h but the reward is awesome

How were you able to choose Gunner for your starter class? I recently started playing this game and the only 3 I was able to choose from was Light Binder, Cryomancer and Paladin.

SWTOR and Tera both shit on this game and they are both free to play. Tera has better gameplay and SWTOR has superior story/cutscenes.

RandomUser179 Tera's gameplay is worse. I've played both and Tera's combat animations suck compared to the combat in this game. Tera is also way more grindier.

***** They could not counter that SWTOR has better story/cutscenes. The voice acting in SWTOR shits on all other MMOs currently. SWTOR is not the best game in some respects, I can admit, but it does do those things better than the others in the MMO genre. FFXIV also has decent story/cutscenes.

***** I haven't even played the game and I found that offensive lol. Being a bandit does seem to be the more chaotic route. I can't even say "fun" due to the ramifications it might have.
Jeremiah S The thing is, these people trade all day, and then they review the game as boring with nothing to do. If they actually did something besides one task repetitively they might actually enjoy themselves. But they grind for the money, get bored, and shit talk the game.
I don't know if you got to the wider Ascension atlas or not in your time playing Joe but the progression opens up a lot more when that happens and it is also how you advance to get further classes unlocked too.

this game was fun back in close beta version now they release it on ps4 class are hiding behind a paywall/grindwall and they change it so much :( but the combat is still awsome
Vamps Gaming it’s not that bad all u have to do Is complete the provinces and just grind dungeons and such but it’s still a hefty pay wall I guess but I like the grind so much.
This game looks gorgeous but it's boring as hell. Seriously, don't even bother to play it. Broken controls, lag, glitches, bugs you name it. This game is a mess.

I liked the theme and ideas of the game but it does get really grindy for prestige, which you need to progress and grindy to unlock new classes
Dude you just played through the starting part, after a while the bosses and dungeons get WAY harder and that makes it less grindy and more rewarding!

One thing that you should know about this game is that you can buy premium contents, like paid currency, or premium, or ofcourse, costumes, with in-game money.
So despite the flaws that this game has, it's a super free to play game. Everything except some collector edition's costumes, you can buy with the money you get from grindings.

It's funny how everyone refers to the combat scene from the intro as 300. It's actually The matrix that started it. So they are doing the matrix thing. :)
Don't forget Joe, classics like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights had you stand in place when fighting, but it was more complex with all the mechanics like dice rolling going on in the background and you have to be more tactical with powers and magic. I enjoy both this and action approaches but action without variety can get boring.

It may get boring in the beginning to get sparks of insight asap, but later you get temporary mounts to try out and you just need to wrok a path to the class you want.

check your Currency tab for your caps on sparks and stuff like that. Also for your clothes there are other clothing drops in the world with other colors, check the Auction House for what you want.
I have been playing this game the last few days, and I have to say it is probably one of the best I have played in awhile. It is beautiful, the story is pretty interesting and the customization is mind blowing for a game that is new.
I think I might have to make this one a permanent game on my roster.
This one's an on-the-fence when it comes to me. Not too complex when you first start out, but it slowly eases you into more frantic and fast-paced combat as you go along, introducing different mechanics as you go. It's not a godsend, but certainly worth a try.
