Gabrielle turning around her philosophy of life and going against anything she believed in at the time to save Xena is the greatest love declaration I have ever witnessed on TV

This is probably my favorite scene out of the entire series. Gabrielle abandoning her beliefs to protect her friend was so powerful to watch.

This, for me, is the greatest declaration of love ever shown on a series. The moment Gabrielle completely disregards her most valued beliefs in order to save the woman she loves. And she doesn’t even hesitate. I was floored the first time I saw this. One of the best shows and greatest love story ever!
When Gabrielle didn't even think twice about what she was doing because she wanted to protect Xena.. It was just so powerful to see her transition to this, but you could also tell how Xena wanted her to stay pure/true to herself on her journey. Xena didn't want that life for Gabrielle. She knew how much her killing someone would weigh on her conscience. Probably one of the saddest episodes, but also one of my favorite scenes from the series.
There was an episode earlier that season when she threw a spear to save someone but it missed she probably didnt feel real emotional attachment for that man like she do Xena thats probably why she hit her target to save Xena

Top writing right here. The two protagonists changing roles, Xena at her most helpless, vulnerable state and Gabrielle giving up on her beliefs to protect. Ah, no words for this masterpiece of a series.
It was tough to watch Xena so vulnerable. 😢
Everything about this scene was shocking, violent and beautiful. The gong when the chakram hits Xena is perfect and STILL gives me goosebumps. The music, the way she falls. I remember watching while recording it on VHS and then rewinding this scene about a billion times.
Gabrielle being activated into full kill mode was glorious, sad and frightening. The frightening part is how good she was at killing. That's a scary thing to realize about yourself.
Callisto: "Interesting". She delivered some of the best one liners in this show. ♡
For people that aren't aware: Gabrielle going apeshit is a big surprise because she spent most of the season trying to be a pacifist. No violence or hate.
And the fact she’s never seriously killed in battle. She was tricked into killing, but otherwise was all blunt force or pacifist. This is the first serious time we see her kill, and it is one of the most brutal killing scenes we see.

I remember this one so well. I yelled, they broke her chakram! Then my jaw was on the floor the rest of the scene, I was in shock for so long afterwards. Some fans think this is the best episode they ever did. I have to agree.

@@kyleday5026 Apparently, Xena started as a smaller spinoff series to Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. They had weaker cameras and overall equipment. However, ratings started rising and eventually it surpassed Hercules sometime during season 2 and it was the leading show from then on. I guess at that point they decided to invest more in the show and upgrade the production value which made later seasons look much better.
I personally do believe this is the best episode and scene of the entire show! Absolutely amazing, I couldn't believe it was happening yet it made complete sense for Gabrielle to react this way. Very few TV shows achieve such jaw dropping moments.
IKR, the Chackram has been through a lot and it never breaks. My guess it was used against Xena and so that why it broke. The Chackram was made for Xena and when it was used against its master it broke.
I love how Gabrielle didn't miss the target this time.
That moment when Gabbie goes full berserker is the most satisfying yet gut wrenching thing.
She gave up her way if peace for the way of friendship. So loyal.
I always enjoy watching Gabrielle find her true path. A true Amazon queen. Defender of those who need her.

I so agree I love Xena my favorite character besides Xena I will have to say Gabrielle and also this episode has to be one of my top 10 favorites because seeing Xena down like she did all hell broke loose I love seeing that side of her and at the same time I didn't because she really never killed anyone besides that one chick when she got pregnant by Day hawk but she literally showed no mercy as Xena talt her well
Go Gabrielle, this was the defining moment of her accepting her warrior side...that sometimes you have to put aside beliefs to be there for someone you love if it means saving their life.
This was when she became a true badass
Season four was PINNACLE Xena. This still gives me chills when Gabrielle kills those Romans.

Also massive props to Hudson Leick. That one word line of "Interesting." with that one expression told an entire story. Considering everything Callisto's been through up til this point, and how she's pretty much done with everything, even she finds the sudden development of Gabrielle abandoning the way of peace and love for the way of friendship, well, as she puts it, interesting. I swear, Callisto steals the show in every episode she's in.
Also love the way this scene builds. Like at 0:18. You can feel Callisto's dilemma. She hates Xena. But she'd been warned not to harm her physically in any way.

Watching Xena go down like that really made Gabrielle snap. Even before she went to the way of love and she fought with her staff she never went in the way she did here. Amazing scene and a game changer for Gabrielle’s character
This is BY FAR one of the BEST SCENES EVER! The sound effects with every stab is SO GENIOUS!!!! And the fact that Gabrielle didn't care at ALL about her way in that moment and risked EVERYTHING. SO GENIOUS!! The evil part of The yin yang in Gabrielle came out. AMAZING WORK from everyone on that show!!!! And I LOVED how Callisto thought Gabrielle would get killed and sob over Xena. hahahaha SURPRISE!
This episode is one of the best and this shocking scene is perfect. What a shock to see the Chakram break Xenas back and than Gabrielle trying her best to save and protect Xena even by killing if she has to. I have watched this episode and especially this amazing scene many many times. We need a Xena Revival with original cast!
Saw none of this coming, Xena being seriously injured with her own weapon, the Chakram breaking in half, Gabrielle forgetting her path of peace to protect Xena, taking out 6 or 7 soldiers in a blind fury. Lucy and Renee were so good in this episode, one of the best they ever did.
I wonder if this was the setup for the calisto as Xena episodes. Lucy Lawless broke her back riding a horse on a talk show.
@@drmayeda1930 No this has nothing to do with Lucys accident. That happened in season 2 and this episode with Xena having her back broken is at the end of season 4.

Heartbreaking for Xena to see Gabrielle like this, but the character development in scenes like this during the fourth season is why I love it.
When Xena says "It's my spine" it just sends shivers.
When I watched this series this particular scene gave me the chills . Gabrielle was trying to be a pacifist and fight evil with love, she swore never to fight again,after she killed a woman she didn't mean to kill, Gabrielle then followed a mentor by the name of Eli who was a Jesus like figure he taught her how to live her life in peace and love, but she had to fight save xena's life this was an amazing scene and my favorite one out of the whole series.

Incredible scene! That simultaneous breaking of the chackram and Xena’s lower spine-just the echo effect and expression on both characters’ face…I think we all felt that! Amazing production!

Oh my goodness, this scene will and forever be one of my favorites from the show. It stirred so many feelings and emotions the first time I saw it at age 13, and the emotions were rampant. The build up with the music when you see Callisto holding the chackram, angrily looking at Xena about to get away, I cant even describe how I felt when she throws it, ricochets, and breaks on Xena's back with that bell toll sound. I just remember my eyes tearing up. And when Gabrielle starts stabbing that guy at the end and that sound almost like an exhale that washes over her as she looks at the bloody dagger and drops it gave me such chills.. such an intense scene.

Heartbreaking😱😭 I feel like Rob Tapert owes me money for all the counseling I’ve required.😆 Seriously though, this was award-winning material. Top notch cinematography, writing, acting... They’ve taken the elements of actual Greek tragedy and put them all into a format viewers can get into. I appreciate that none of this was done for shock value, but instead added to the story arc of all the characters...Xena’s unrelenting hatred for Caesar and living the code of the warrior to the bitter end, Gabrielle’s questioning of her path/realizing that her love for Xena is stronger than an idealistic way of living, and poor Callisto still wandering eternity, lost, confused and without the peace she so desperately needed.
This sets up the entire movement towards Xena balancing her good and bad parts, Gabrielle finding that peace isn’t about being an empty vessel but instead finding peace with her own good/bad parts, and potentially sets up the possibility of Callisto finally being redeemed.
Epic pinnacle moment of Xena that heralded character changes even more far reaching than the Twilight of the Gods arc. Bravo!💐

This has always been my favorite scene. Gabrielle being a badass warrior! Just as good as Xena. Absolutely BRILLIANT warrior.
Look at Gabrielle go!!!! It was satisfying to see her warrior side and protect Xena like that. Even the scene after when they were in jail and Xena was shedding a tear saying sorry, it was great to see Gabrielle comforting and holding her and had no regrets saving her. So awesome.
This show got so dark as it progressed it was shocking to me. I remember how campy and fun it was in the first 2 seasons.
For real. It was hard for me to get through season 3 as it became much darker than the first 2 seasons.
i preferred it more as it went on. i find many of the earlier episodes completely unwatchable. similar to buffy's trajectory for me.

The show still had campy episodes, but they did a great job of providing a breather from the darker stories by interjecting "campy" episodes in between. If you go back you'll find that every other episode was "camp" and had a lighter tone.

by far the best moment of gabrielle…she’s usually the one who wants nothing but peace..the thought of killing hurts her…but to see her on full kill mode…it just shows no matter what you’ll do whatever it takes to protect someone you love!!

Anyone is capable of that out of love especially when you exist side by side as a companion to a warrior and lead the Amazon's.
This is such a throwback to like season 1 I believe when Xena had gotten hurt and Gabrielle tried to dress up as her and fight in her place and then foreshadows her duel in Japan in the finale. Gabrielle has the best character development on this show and is one of the top TV Show characters with best Character growth.
I know what you mean when I was a teenager watching this I didn't give her much thought about her development but now getting as an adult getting the box set and watching all again she had the best store arc the constant changers she has she was one of the best characters in the show
@@andrewkkerr8435 Shows sometimes are waay better as an adult. Childhood is fun but understanding comes with adulthood and you appreciate it way more.
Absolutely true when I was younger I didn't care much about her changes didn't really strike me but know she is amazing I do wonder if they still would have made her like that at the end of it if Lucy lawless didn't fall pregnant
And if the show continued for one more season how they would of handled the actress that played Gabriel pregnancy during the show

This moment was very shocking to me when I first saw it. I thought for sure Xena wouldn’t let Alti’s vision come true the whole season, and then this happened and I was like, “awwww nooo...!”
Joseph LoDuca knows how to make it all come together with that amazing original soundtrack.
💔 This is the best and desperate "end of season". The first time I saw him I thought it would be the end. And in this scene there is a plot twist in the story, for the length of the vision. Xena has a broken spine and is helpless, Callisto seems to have won, and we realize that Gabrielle would do anything for Xena and would never abandon her. So heartbreak and sadness 🤧
I’m literally crying
This was one of the best scenes of the series, Xena, Gabrielle and Callisto made it iconic. Xena is helpless, she can’t be the hero anymore. Gabrielle goes against everything she believes in for love and Callisto realized the power of redemption
This a staggeringly shocking scene which focuses on the special bond between Xena and Gabrielle. Xena falls on the ground after she was hit by the chakram in the back and Gabrielle chooses to give up the way of love to protect Xena from the Roman soldiers
This show was a blessing we all could have appreciated more.
I'm rewatching the series and just watched this episode a couple of nights ago. This scene has the same effect on me as it did when I saw the premiere of the episode so many years ago. It's really cool to see everyone posting on these videos with the same love for the show so many years later. Xena has had such a positive impact on my life and continues to do so. Love you all.

Even if it does feel like Gabrielle went toe to toe with a buncha people who have never held a sword in their lives.
Gabrielle didn't use her weapon. If anything the trip to India broke her.
That moment when Grabrielle had more warrior potential than we all thought from the start.

The chakram had always been a trademark of Xena's, so it's obvious why the chakram broke; the emotional pain and the future purpose meant to be fulfilled-Xena's fighting spirit had been broken and the chakram was the element able to bring her inner flame back to its place!!!!!

Very true. Xena telling Gabrielle not to "cry" after this and when they were on the cross, always confirmed to me - ironically, Callisto releases Xena from her torment. She dies in peace.
also look at the speed the chakram was going, evil demon spirit callisto is incredibly strong. plus she was told not to physical intervene, no wonder the chakram broke.
The creators of the show originally wanted to give Xena a new weapon after the Chakram was destroyed but they changed their minds and instead they had the Chakram repaired and upgraded.
@@samhart4205 truly this is the moment Xena and Callisto's karmic affinity starts unleashing itself; just like Xena and Gabrielle were meant to stand by each other's side for eternity, Xena and Callisto were meant to be linked to each other forever. Xena switched positions with Callisto between Hell and Heaven and Callisto gave Xena a baby (Eve). And we also have Gabrielle fulfilling her on purpose by trying to save Xena by force as well as forgiving Callisto. Xena, Gabrielle and Callisto, each, were always tormented by the actions of an outsider and realized fighting for a better tomorrow is the only option remaining-it should have been, because that way, they were surely true to their convictions! When Gabrielle chose to step away from fighting, Xena's inner flame got tarnished as if Xena was the one who was always wrong: and Gabrielle's flurry of attacks in this video proves she was afraid of being a warrior-a warrior who knows from where to begin and where to end things. I'm not saying it's Gabrielle's fault they got captured, because it's not. I'm saying that each one's internal and emotional breakthrough led them to this and the broken chakram is the key to the new world they wanted to live in.
I’m rewatching the show and I realize in the episode The Convert (3 episodes before this one), Xena gets hurt in a fight and Gabrielle tries to run to help her but was stopped by Najara. I think that foreshadows her losing it in this episode. Gabrielle even says she realizes that in some situations, when someone shoves you, you may have no option but to shove back.
You're 100% right. Very good connection to The Convert. Also the part where Gabrielle throws the spear is a callback to A Good Day, early in season 4 where she failed to save the man's life.

This is chilling, can't say anymore about it. They say the central question of Xena Warrior Princess is redemption, it is for the character of Xena. But the central question here and for the entire show, falls on the character of Gabrielle. From beginning to end is the christian philosophy: forgive your enemies. Xena loves the way Gabrielle is: that is the closest Xena got to say "I love you, Gabrielle", she admires the pacifist ways and soul of Gabrielle and that's why she cries "nooo" when she is lying on the ground watching Gabrielle becoming herself, Xena. Some comments here are so good reaching every aspect of this episode that I am not going to repeat what they say, like the music the cinematography and I would add the fine terrific work of Reneé O'Connor, Lucy Lawless and Hudson Leick. The best episode, no doubt. Thanks a lot for uploading it. Best tv series ever.

It has only been out of protection for Xena that this happens.this moment is what truly changed Gabrielle

This popped up in my recomendations, strangely i was thinking about this episode the kther day. Easily one of the best episodes of the show, so much happened, we got Callisto, the chakram broke, Xena paralyzed and Gabrielle snapping. Just an emotional rollercoaster.

This is by far one of my all time favorite moments in the show. To see Gabrielle going absolutely ballistic and killing numerous soldiers not only shows her loyalty and love, but her strength and abillities.

One of the best and most brutal episodes. All of Xena's key enemies joining together to take her out and winning.
That's when you know that gabrielle just took an dozen of soldiers by herself. That's when you know the next warriors princess or a battling bard for that matter
This is the first I saw Gabrielle go berserk ! To save xena !
Here, she went full berserker, true. But even untrained, in S1, after Callisto's poison dart she fought for Xena, then S2, I think, she fought off those trying to take Xena's body.
But this scene, and this ep, is with me always. The same love that inspired this fierceness, was displayed in the tenderness of her holding Xena's broken body in the next scene. The Power of this episode!
The way that Chakram broken is also amazing. The Chakram is Xena's weapon (it was created for her) and when it was used against her it broke. Think about we see the Chakram cut through anything even bounce of weapons created by gods and it is never been broken but when it hit Xena's spine it broken because it was used against its owner.

it's episode changes completely I could observe Gabriel stain his soul by committing a murder by poisoning a warlord when Xena made the wish to have a different life but this is not the same. is really a very important episode in relation to the very evolution of Gabriel
A truly sad episode of Xena. Callisto offers Caesar to help rid him of Xena which he accepts. Xena and Gabrielle are arrested, imprisoned and crucified and they died and as of consequence, Caesar gets assassinated by the Senate. The price of selling your soul to the devil.
this proves abd shows the unending selfless love both of them had for each other. xena laid down her life and paid the ultimate price in death for her best friend! Gabrielle would have done the exact same thing for xena even if it meant death! these went through so much together through trials and error, through pain and suffering, to being crucified! Xena will forever live inside if my heart and soul! thanks to xena i have found peace!

This is one of the scenes in the series that I'd love to show to some people out there who constantly dismiss Xena as just a "cheesy action show" to show them how great the show can do serious drama. Its one of the most powerful sequences in series television and everything is on point - the performances of Renee, Lucy and Hudson, the direction, Joseph LoDuca's great music. I constantly wish that this series would be held as in high regard as for instance Buffy The Vampire Slayer is by the modern audience, it preceded Buffy and gave that show more of a chance to be successful and created tropes that Buffy continued on with. I wish online reactors would give it a serious shot. Everyone who hasn't yet watched this great series needs to asap.

when Callisto breaks the Chakram against Xena’s soin was iconic!
At some point in this fight, Gabrielle's desire to save her lover turns into utter rage and despair at the fact that she's powerless to do anything about Xena's spine. It's like a person pounding their fist on a table in defeat...except in this case, the pounding fists were stabs and headbutts.

One note of detail I really liked here is that Callisto failed in all aspects of her mission. One of the key constraints she had to work within was not physically harming Xena. But she couldn’t help herself because Xena was on the way to escaping and her rage got the best of her.
So the mere act of HOLDING xenas swords turns gabreil into a feroucious killing machine. I knew it! xenas sword was the source of her power all along! LOL
