Was in a group ride a few days ago, we had all sorts. The leader, an experienced rider, was riding a 125cc, we had a couple of learners on 125's in the group, some A2 bikes, ,some 600/650 sport bikes, a litre bike and at the very back of the pack was a 'busa. Went pretty well and fun for all, the faster bikes would shoot off every so often but then pull over and rejoin in the middle somewhere. It really depends on the attitude of the riders. The leader being on a 125 meant that the pace was fairly relaxed overall, which also makes it easy for the faster bikes to overtake and have their fun where road and traffic conditions allowed.

I went from a 50 cc Scooter to a 250 cc starter full size motorcycle recently. For me, moving at even at 40mph on a bike feels fast and fun compared to a car. The speeds some of these super sport bike reach are just unimaginable for me to ever want to ride. I have plenty fun just cruising down country roads.

This! went from a 50cc souped up moped, to a 500 and now a 650. I usually ride around 40-65mph, and i'm having great fun. I've gone 130mph and above on other bikes, and it's absolutely nuts! I don't need to go that fast to have fun.
You'll get that speed itch at some point, just like me and many others. Just stay safe when that itch rears its head and keep riding brother

If it's having a ride with friends, you ride as a group......
Imagine being in a ride with an africa twin 1100, a r1 big bang santander edition with a power commander, a z900 z-cup bike ............and the odd 125 naked learner....
Having fun in a pack is far nicer to ride with restraint and taking care of each other..... it's a thing of respect for the person.
When you ride alone, you go your own pace.... when you ride with a group, you go the speed of the slowest person.
On a silly side note, i've managed to get 3.3L/100km with a 1000cc bike when riding in a group with learners or slower bikes ......... (that compared to 17L/83km on the fastestest pace I had).

When i used to ride smaller bikes like my 125cc i was able to keep up on group rides with bigger bikes such as 500s and 600s, if they're not topping their bikes out. something like a yamaha yzf-r125 could cruise at 70mph, and if nobodys speeding it works out perfect and you're not left behind.

From when you first get a learner bike, there is peer pressure and advice to go big or go home, keep upgrading to go faster and have a bigger p.nis extension to show off, but there is a point in some riders career when they think, actually big bikes are bulky, cumbersome, tall, etc etc and its not really as fun anymore, then take a bravery test and swap out their 900/1000 for a Honda minibike, and absolutely grin from ear to ear enjoying small rides better, I dont think big bikes are the fun anymore, I feel I have elevated to a higher level along with many others and enjoy riding more now! I agree with statement about making 125 person enjoy their bike rather than hate it because cant keep up, I would act like slow traffic buffers to 125 friends as it makes you feel good anyway..

Some guys that comute to work on a 125cc can have more experience than higher CC that only take weekend rides, that being said engine power does make a difference mainly on highways, but respect to all, its kinda cool helping someone into this world. Big respect to you both, very informative and helpful for new riders, what's the point of talking someone into biking then blasting off into the distance which just makes them feel silly and upset because they can't keep up. Also learner riders can pick up good and bad habits from faster, more experienced riders.
At the end of the day a ride you can come home from is a great ride.... Respect 😊

I started riding bigger bikes this spring and the thing that gets me isn't the size of the bike or being slower, it's when people I'm riding with/people I see out on the road do (or more often don't do) things that my instructor burnt into my soul with a red hot cattle prod to do/avoid.

My first group ride was with my family, aunts, uncles, parents. I had a 300 sport bike and they were all on 1100cc harleys. Best way is put the slowest guys in the front, like two leads who are experts and the newbies behind them. It kinda paces all the other guys while keeping the newbies on their game keeping up with the leaders, everyone works together ig.

First of all its awesome that you are getting to share your love of biking with your wife. I'm about to start the same journey wkth with my Mrs. But instead of going the 125 route we're looking at going straight for a "bigger bike" like a z650, cb650, mt07 etc. In my opinion modern 125s are far, far too slow to the point their lack of power is dangerous. They are fine in town but as soon as the roads open up you're at the mercy of everyone else on the road.

    • @fingerhorn4
      @fingerhorn4 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

That theory is not born out by statistics. You are far more likely to kill yourself on a higher powered machine than a 125cc. Provided your motorcycle can achieve 60 mph it is not much different, in practise, than most cars on the road, except maybe for motorways.

Seriously now an interesting video thanks.
I have ridden with learners on small bikes and we always make sure that they are included and we stop at major intersections. These were country rides.
But I have been with groups that just don’t care and as the learner at the time it was friggin awful and and dangerous because the less experienced riders were riding faster than they were comfortable… the people running those rides were dropkick speeders.

I haven't had a bike since 2006, and I am starting to get the itch for getting one again.
I have only ever had 250's (CB250RS X2, GSX-R250 ('91) and a GSX250ES), so I don't want something too big, on the other hand, it really needs to have considerably more power, as I always felt annoyed with the amount of throttle needed just to follow Trafic on those small bikes.
So I am seriously considering buying a Ninja 500 SE. Modern, not too powerfull, good fuel economy and not too expensive either. The last thing is quite important here in Denmark, where we have absolutely insane taxes on motor vehicles. The 500 SE cost the equivalent of £9603, not including the registry fee.

last year was my first season on a motorcycle, and i've bought myself a Z 750, and the whole season my bike buddy was on R 125 as his birthday is after season, so he couldn't get full A license yet. I've got to say i'm glad he was on a 125 because it forced me to ride more tame so he can keep up, thus i gained experience without the risks of the big bike speeds ( of course sometimes i would throttle up and use all those horses, but if he also had a big bike that would be way more frequent). We tried going to some bigger rides, but unfortunately those people didnt really care about my mates 125 and as soon as we took off they were gone :( so no point in a group ride when they just gonna abandon you at the start. Overall im happy that my first season i was accompanied by a 125 buddy :)

I'm 18 and I ride a Duke 125 and have been for about a year now, I ride with my dad who is on a 650 CBR and my uncle who has a 750 VFR, and have ridden with 1200 Super Tenere's and such. I ride at a decent pace and can take corners just as well as some 600 Riders, if not better than most that I know personally lol. I have ridden 600's multiple times and am also comfortable on them (Manoeuvring, accelerating and cornering). Being the "Slow" one of the group when you know what what the feeling of a big bike is like is difficult. I always feel bad for them because not only do they want to go fast, So do I! It is down to the rules here and how long it takes to progress up the Licence Ladder. I feel that honestly the Laws in the UK are a little too strict, 4 years on low CC motorbikes is just way too long. 1 year on a 125 or a 250 then 1 on a 600 would be more than fair in my opinion. Keep the CBT for the people wanting just a small CC bike, and open it up a little more for the people more interested in these bikes and not just being commuter's or delivery drivers.

I tour alongside a 125 on occasion. If I stay behind, there's never an issue with pace. If I'm ahead, I'm always thinking about whether I'm going too fast or not.
Sometimes a nice bit or road will present itself. A good, clean overtake, and powering up through the gears takes care of my adrenaline addiction, then I can chill at a layby until le 125 comes past again and I can rejoin formation. Everyone's happy 😊

I could say that it’s because I’m not very close to them but I do sort of blame it on the bike because everybody I know has 400cc, 600cc, even 1000cc sport bikes where I have a grom with 125cc. Even went on a ride with a Facebook group where all bikes were welcome and no highways, but even then everybody just left me behind, not in the dust, but enough so I’m always in the back.

Remember first passing full license am on 400, and I can hear rider coming up behind. Just from the way the engine contorting and tyres working I can tell dude is a rider. Boi on 125 cbr, baffle removed and L plate flipped, comes screaming controlling the slide, I gave homie way and he just drifts around the round about like 2 foot behind the car in front leaving tyre skid where he want them, then flew off. He was not holding anyone back unless you are on the motorway.

I find this odd that people would get a 125 or attempt to do any kind of group ride with one. Now I am from the US and live in the country. Most people in my area start on a 300-500. My son started on a 250 and couldn't even do the speed limit on some roads. I could not imagine trying it with a 125.

Nowt wrong with a 125 TBH. There's the automatics when haven't got the HP, and there's the geared 125's which have a bit more power. I know this because I used to have an old 1998 GN which had more power than my 125 Sinnis shuttle/Yam Vity (current and last scoot I had), the Carlini 50 (my 1st bike), the Peugeot Speedfight 100, and the Yam Aerox 100.
That said, the shuttle had a quicker take-off on the scoots), but the GN had more brute force for the cc. The difference between the scoots and the GN was like a gazelle compared with a Thoroughbred horse. Then there's the bigger bikes like the Kwak ZZR, and they're like shires/draft horses.
A prime example was with my previous license for the Carlini, Peugeot, and the Aerox, and the GN, I could pull a trailer on all of them. I noticed the difference between the GN and the automatics because I had to help many friends move house. The scoots were slow out of a junction, but the GN was like a shire.
Anyway, being a shorty (I'm less than 5ft tall, with a bike that has a 31" seat height, and my inside leg (which I look at bikes that are at least 2" shorter to be able to deal with and steady the bike, as I have a permanently busted right knee), so I need some bike I can get flat-footed on when it comes to bigger bikes, like a Kwak EN 454 LTD (got one is waiting in the wings for me to pass my test). I love the style, the seat height, and how easy it is to keep on the road (mechanical-wise).
I must give you your credit Goblin. The few things I took from you was the clutch control, gear shifting videos. You explain this which is one thing very few instructors will do. The only person I know personally, who explained this biking stuff to me, was my uncle. I've been on the back of his bike since 5yo, and got my 1st bike (the Carlini 50) at 18yo), but it's a case of graduating to 250, then 350, then the 400's, the 500's then 600's and all that.
He's one of the best bikers I've been with, and he's ex marksman. The best thing was we didn't have the CBT back in them days

ive ridden in multiple group rides (125 groups and a mixed) and both were so bad i quit riding for a good while after as i just got LEFT, it got to a point i was about 2 miles behind, i pulled over, cut the intercom and put music on instead and set gps for home.... not going on another till im on a bigger bike cus its just not fun and you cant guarantee the others WONT dash off (for background ive been riding 4 years now and have ridden 600ccs with an instructor and love it but havent been successful passing my test :/ )

I have 20 years exprerience of riding, I don't like riding in big groups, never have. I do enjoy riding with my husband as it is an adventure for both of us. He is normally in front as I have no sense of direction.

Very interesting video. I have organised a ride out to a local bike meet with 3 riders on 125s all on L plates, i ride an R1250RS. I am currently working out the route which will be mostly country lanes. For me the big question is do i lead or sit in the middle or at the back, i have an intercom but not sure if the others do. I have been an advanced rider for many years and am very aware that my riding style is different form a learners, i will be keeping speed down and telling them to ride as they have been taught. Should be an interesting experience for everyone i hope.

  • @troublingleaf

I dont care how difficult it is, if you're on a group ride you only go as fast as the slowest rider. You can still enjoy the odd bend, you just don't leave them behind. Its not about fair. You went for a ride with them, if you leave them, you aren't riding with them. Yes it can get frustrating when you come up to a long twistie road you want to ride, but you're riding with someone else... And don't forget, that slower rider on a 125 was you at some point.

Tried hanging onto the tail of moto 3 250 cc 60 hp single on my Triumph 675 producing over double the power. Through the corners no chance. Blast past them down the straight but kinda pointless as they sweep past aound the bends. Need a race track though.

But really, acceleration is most of the fun. Braking too. I had more fun doing >50mph in the Swiss alps, trail braking and accelerating near the bike's limit, than going 100 on the autobahn getting there and back.
