This story mentions the "linnet" and since I didn't know what that was, I looked it up. I see it's not a native bird to the Americas (I'm American) so that's why it hadn't heard of it previously. Unfortunately, wikipedia says "In Britain, populations are declining, attributed to increasing use of herbicides, aggressive scrub removal and excessive hedge trimming; its population fell by 56% between 1968 and 1991, probably due to a decrease in seed supply and the increasing use of herbicide. From 1980 to 2009, according to the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme, the European population decreased by 62%. I'm very sorry to hear that. It's eggs are really pretty, white with little purplish speckles on them! As an avid bird lover and feeder for them, I hope the linnet is able to make a comeback in Britain and Europe. Thank you for this great story! I love Wilde!
Yes, there are precious few linnets. Many people don’t know what to look for. The male is extremely recognisable though and they have a lovely song. Thanks for listening!
Have you heard the cockney song”My Old Man said Follow the Van”. It mentions the wife taking her ‘old cock linnet’ a bird which was very popular in Victorian times.
Unable to have any appreciation for any part of this story except for the little fellow who grew such lovely flowers. He was gracious and kind and generous, whereas no other characters showed any godliness or kindness that encouraged me.
I can totally relate to how you feel. The story really hits deep, doesn’t it? It’s amazing how Wilde manages to weave such a simple yet profound tale that makes us think about friendship and sacrifice. Sometimes, the hardest truth is realizing how much we give without expecting anything in return. Do you think true friendship should always be unconditional, or is there a limit to how much we should give? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I love Wilde's stories but I couldn't listen till the end because I wanted to throttle the miller and couldn't beer how much abuse Hans was willing to bear, loved the kind little son. Sometimes things are just too much. But this is very well done and it is a reief tohave achange fromystrries and thrillers . Thank-you
It’s amazing how Wilde’s stories can stir such strong emotions. The miller really does push us to the edge, doesn’t he? Yet Hans’ kindness almost makes you question-how much is too much when it comes to helping others? It’s as if Wilde challenges us to reflect on where we would draw the line. What did you think about the son’s role in all this?
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot Good gracious! And yet, now you point it out, why should I be surprised? Nursery tales traditionally warned children that the world was a dangerous place and they should not trust their natural enemies ('The Gingerbread Man'; 'Little Red Riding Hood') or that they might need to use their wits to get them out of a tight spot ('The Billy Goats Gruff'). Wilde was pointing a similar moral at a more sophisticated level.

It truly is a sad story, yet it holds a mirror to human nature and relationships. Do you think the devoted friend was selfless by choice, or was he a victim of his own trust?
Thank you for reading this story. I enjoyed listening to it immensely. I'm sorry but I don't have a broken wheelbarrow to offer you. Perhaps I am not a devoted friend at all?
I’ve had many a “friend” like this. So sad to bring love and honesty and dedication to a relationship and this is the reward! Shame on me for taking years of abuse to finally learn this lesson the hard way! These friends don’t miss us, they just miss our services.
I hope everybody recognises a so called 'Devoted Friend' from a mile off!! I think the Miller felt his superiority threatened when a 'Jack of all Trades' such as Little Hans was was around!! Such a shame Little Hans was so clever, that he couldn't see right through him!! Point one: Little Hans left a legacy behind which will still over power the Miller and he won't be able to anything about it. Point two: The Miller may be eaten away by guilt for the rest of his life? Point Three: I wonder, maybe Little Hans was out to really seek revenge on the Miller in the end by taking his own life??? Maybe, Maybe not??
@@heidimartin5070 it's deeper then that, Hans wasn't aware of anything like that, he is just a human being, where as the miller is a monster who thinks he's a human. I'm sorry for Wilde to have encountered such monsters.

Thank you so much. I’m sooo thankful for anything that isn’t either a thriller, detective story or murder mystery.
You’re very welcome, Lynne!

A ferocious piece of satire! I wonder if Wilde had any individual in mind when he wrote it, or if it was a general observation?
It’s marvellous to think that these tales were released as children’s stories!

@@classicaudiobookswithelliot It's my pleasure. Thank you for having me! Have a happy and peaceful day, sir.
It kept me awake. I was so angry at the miller.
I can only apologise on his behalf 😬
How lucky Little Hans was - I have never had such a great friend as the Miller 😅
We all know someone like the Miller, I fear 😬
I'm at 15:10 minutes and it's so horrible I'll continue another time, I can't sleep with this, I hope it has a happy end

It does not have a happy end, it's a really sad story
No happy ending here! Just pain, humiliation and then death.

Such a selfish friend.

Not a friend😮
The purpose of life is to help each other
Thanks for listening, Evett!

Oscar Wilde telling a story about animals telling a story about people. Always one step ahead. 😂

Does anyone know the name of the painting chosen for video?

This would be perfect with donald trump as the Miller. And we all know who the water rats are...
He didn’t mind implying God’s truth so he could better abuse a soft touch. The Bible puts no importance on being gullible
