    Thank you for putting a smile on my face. I was watching three lads with new gear, the price tags swinging in the breeze, and trying to read the map whilst going the wrong way. Being a bushcraft instructor of 50 + years, you can imagine how amusing this all was to me (I'm 76 and still out there doing it for days on end). If you can, always have the tent secured to the top of the tent, this will make it easier on your back, when tied to the bottom it will swing into your legs and pull you backwards and you will fatigue fighting it by leaning forward. No need to take a mallet (surplus weight), a rock or small log will do the job. I will leave it there. The distance that you had to walk was short, had it been for hours then I think that you would have found it very difficult and tiring. Enjoyed your easy-going video ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

    Looks like you had fun, One tip don't leave open food packets in your vestibule unless you want to be visited by a fox or badger in the night in woodland. Put your rubbish in a bag and hang it shoulder height on a tree. I just bought my daughter the Hyena II and I'm really impressed you get such a good tent for £50 I picked up the Bobcat 1 for my self and its smaller and lighter to pack keep an eye out for when they go on sale.

    • @thomaslock97
      @thomaslock97  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Good shout, thank you for the suggestion especially wrt tying it up high. I was gonna put it in my tent but figured if something smells it I could be in worse trouble than if it was outside. Tying it up makes more sense though!

    I’m 59 only started hiking about 8 months ago the next logical step for me was wild camping with my dog Archie. I’ve done about half a dozen wild camps so far in woods around The North Downs. I absolutely love it so does my dog. My whole pack 65l rucksack is about 28lb with all my gear. One of the biggest weights is the water my dog drinks quite a bit. I always carry a water filter but where I tend to wild camp there’s not many water sources but as a water filter weighs mere ounces I always carry it
    You do hear some strange sounds in the night but you know they’re all just harmless animals except maybe the odd big cat haha, it’s strange though how protected you feel with just a thin bit of material between you and the outside. The biggest problem I’ve encountered is having a leak in the middle of the night opening up the tent in the pitch black darkness.

    • @thomaslock97
      @thomaslock97  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha no way you have an Archie!! I’m the same with the water; easily an extra 5kg if Archie is coming along. I get through a lot of water too as a gymbro.

    Great video dude! Looks like you had a great time! Question about your sleeping, what were you sleeping on? As if it was only a thin sleeping matt then you were likely cold due to the ground sapping heat away from you. Also, bigger tents might sound cool but they're also colder. Your only source of heat in your tent is your own body heat so if you have a big tent then your bodies going to struggle to heat it. Great video though dude! Looking forward to seeing more!

    • @thomaslock97
      @thomaslock97  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cheers man and cheers for the advice! I was sleeping on an OEX Flux 5.0 which has an R rating of 3 so should've been good for this trip; I think the sleeping bag was the issue... too small to fit me proper so I had to use it as a blanket, which ofc means the heat keeps escaping. Gonna give it one last chance tomorrow (and will also be buying a foil mat to put under the flux 5 just in case it is from the ground).

    The sound at the beginning is muntjac deer barking. They are very small deer and they will bark if they sense your presence. They are harmless! You are so much safer in a forest at night than in a town cente believe me. Just be mindful of rotten trees especially in windy conditions. Aka widow makers. 🫡
