    Ed, thanks for the video. I have this compressor in my home unit here in Phoenix, it is 21 years old and I'm afraid is giving up the ghost. After watching this video I know EXACTLY what is happening to mine. Sometimes during a run , you can hear the compressor sounds like it slows down and starts rattleing or as you say scrambleing , if I allow to continue, the comp heats up and and shuts itself off. After about 30mins it will come back on and sound right. This is a heat pump so it is in use all year and is very busy here as it was 46c here yesterday, we are in cooling from about april through oct-nov. hopefully the old girl will hang in whilst I shop out a new unit, thanks again for the in-depth video, I like your new Merc by the way , its abig jump from little car ! Scott

    Great Vid!
    As well as Ac and blowing stuff up, i also really enjoy your engine projects and am looking forward to seeing the big generator finally going.

    That's a very interesting compressor design. It looks quite efficient.

    I was always curious as to why a compressor made the metallic buzz vs the typical hum of a fan motor. Now seeing how those metal plates / pistons move explains that. they're just going at high speed under normal operation. Thanks for the video, even though I've come across it years later. I recently had to have my apartment's heat pump replaced, the unit that was here, was installed in 1994. Anyway the other night when the AC came on, the compressor shut off, came back on and blew a big hole in the side of the coil, and all the Freon escaped in a big woosh. The unit had been trying to die the last few years, and they tried to milk it along as to not to go through the cost of a new one as long as possible. It had gotten really loud too, it sounded like it could go at anytime. The new one is much quieter, even inside as well as out.

  • @OlegKostoglatov
    @OlegKostoglatov 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those things are quite a mechanical marvel inside, its seems a lot more complicated then just using pistons and cylinders, not compared to something like a radial aircraft engine of course. The scrolls themselves look like something you could use in a piece of ornamental iron work like a fence or a railing.

    I have a 5 year old 2.5 ton that knocked after 3 minutes of start up for 10 seconds today.Had to shut breaker off to get pump to start twice yesterday.Today it’s cycling fine except wondering about the 10 second knock? Cool video.

    Thanks for the video, I was wondering what was inside one of these. It doesnt seem like a whole lot can go wrong, though I do wonder what damage was done to mine when the tech over charged it and that compressor hammered LOUD, still kinda runs but my ac doesnt work well.....

    Very informative video, looks like Copeland should pay for your video or maybe they are not too keen on giving away their design secrets. Definitely agree that the floating seal and pressure loading on the fixed scroll is an ingenious design feature. I would assume that the floating seal is last part of the Copeland compressor that ever fails in service. The video now explains why my Lennox condenser with a Copeland compressor does not use a starting capacitor (only uses a run capacitor) like some competing condenser units.

    I do like seeing things blown up but I like seeing the building and rebuilding stuff more like the Kelly and Lewis and the Westinghouse generator. Maybe the Kelly and Lewis could be paired up to power the Westinghouse but it probably doesn't have enough grunt to turn it over at full RPM, but the Morris engine might, the Datsun and Jag engines would for sure.

    I'm looking for a compressor that produces the most pressure.
    From what I understand, a "Scroll" compressor can produce the highest pressure.
    What may I expect for maximum pressure from a Scroll compressor?
    Thank you.

    hi, i would ask you, what may happen if i use a frequency inverter to vary the speed of a air conditioner compressor, if i do that, will it work like a inverter air contitioner?, is there any problem if the speed of refrigerator gas vary? can i modify a old air conditioner into inverter technology?

    Thanks for super videos. Have two questions. As I get to know, some Copeland scrolls have oil pumps on the bottom. Does it pump up the oil to some parts of compressor or the amount of oil within the refrigerant is enough? The place where you grind off the upper cap is where the top scroll body joints and seals?

  • @FilterChanger

    Is your vfd similar to the inverter technology in the newer mini splits? Or does it just change the frequency of your A/C mains? I work with these everyday, but have never seen one run like this. Very cool video.

Question: Would you happen to know the minimum watts this scroll requires in order to start up and maintain minimum pressure when installed in fully enclosed system? And how many watts you're using to start when open like this? Thnx again! Subscribed and liked!

    perhaps a scroll compressor could be used like a roots type supercharger was for a siren. perhaps we could make a scroll siren. but we would need a way to force a bunch of air into it and mount a large megaphone like aparatus

      Well there at too many coming from India where they can't figure out how to keep their dicks in their pants! Hell every damn motel and hotel are now owned by India people and I refuse to stay at any of them anymore! They can keep their bed bugs! We Americans invent most of the good stuff and then Wall Street executives figure out how to profit more from it being made in China through slave labor with the full backing of your congressmen since they are allowed to do insider trading and make a fortune while they send Martha Stewart to prison for it! Have I said enough?

      Believe it or not, there's a whole lot of more capital intensive manufacturing that goes on in the US. The problem is, it's usually for bigger ticket items like Full AC compressors (outdoor ones that would cool a house or an office building) like the one featured in this video. Anything from this to multi-ton units you'd find for really big units.
      The problem is more on the consumer side of things. A whole lot of crap that people just mindlessly buy on the regular from the store is so cheap that it's almost unfeasible to make here in the States. There's a reason why a typical no-name screw driver set at Wal-Mart costs 5 bucks.

    • @Aussie50
      @Aussie50  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol I have no idea why they would put a soft start on a domestic AC unit, most have or need a hard start kit (start cap and relay)
      I would just delete the thing and see how it goes.
      you may notice more inrush current causing lights to flicker ever so slightly if its a large compressor tho.

    • @bigmacbricky
      @bigmacbricky 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is a start cap inside the soft starter. older models of my heat pump dont have them but apparently the power company here in Ireland is looking for soft starts to be installed, must leave it easier on their transformers or something.
