As someone who’s been told this allegory about a thousand times by his dad, yup, this is accurate. I think the interesting part about this allegory too, is that the line between genius and insanity is practically relative. The thing that separates them is that we think the geniuses are right. Furthermore, we do not “know” that we are right. However much we might believe something is a shadow, or the one casting it, we can only suspect. Some methods I would say are incredibly reliable, such as “what is repeatable and observable is true”, one of the base philologies of science. But our perception is incredibly limited. And there are people who seem to reject that notion, instead prioritizing what they feel instead of what they see when it comes to their beliefs about the world. I don’t find that at all rational, but it is understandable. Feelings are good for figuring out what you believe in, not believe is, I would say. Anyways, thanks for helping more people to consider that there’s a difference between a shadow, and the thing casting it. There’s a lot of shadows in the modern world that people treat like they objectively are important, when the truth is that we’re the only ones who decide that. I wish more people could realize that a meaningful life is more valuable that conventional success. I think there’s a lot of shadows in that direction. But I’ll stop there. Thanks to anyone who’s read this far, and I hope you have a great day ^.^
Have you ever thought maybe it keeps going? Like what if the sun is not the ultimate truth but rather the fire in the cave and the shadows on the wall are really the Earth as we know it.
That's a good take! Plato's "Republic" discusses three truths: perceived truth, "real" truth, and ascended truth. I believe that's representing the shadows, the sun, and then anything that we cannot see beyond that, respectively.
I think this is exactly the conclusion you're meant to come to. The allegory presents you a narrower version of perceived truth because we cannot easily imagine a greater one. But the purpose is to make us wonder if there is a greater one and to seek it. If the purpose of the allegory were to pat you on the back for not staring at shadows all day long, it would be pretty useless. The point is to make you wonder if you actually are only looking at shadows.
Fun Fact: this was written by Socrates( Plato’s teacher). Typically a philosopher won’t trust anyone to record his plays but he had faith that his student would accurately represent it.
By the time of The Republic, Plato's notes are considered to be about his ideas and not Socrates anymore iirc. Here he makes Socrates talk but it really is all fiction and reflecting Plato's ideas. Plato really was the first guy to do fanfics.
The visuals are nice, but my praise goes to the narration-subtle, sturdy, and matching the tone of the visuals just right. Kudos to you sir for a well made video.
You have no idea how much this comment means to me! I spent somewhere around 30 minutes perfecting the cadence and tone for the narration, so this makes it feel worth it.
Damn, my philosophy teacher wasn't able to explain this to me so I could understand in three lessons. But 3-minute video from Minecraft did. (Well I don't really care about philosophy, so itt's not I tried to understand him that hard back then to be honest.) Great job on the video.

So neat that you're explaining philosophy through Minecraft!
i choose the raw chicken
Are you content with the chicken, or are you willing step up to the beef?
"BEHOLD, A MAN!"
in other words: jump for the beef
"So ask yourself, are you content with the raw chicken, or will you jump for the beef?"

We don’t actually know if Socrates ever said any of the words Plato put in his mouth, as Socrates never wrote anything.
