Hives or uritcaria is very easily diagnosed clinically. When your doctor sees you, they are able to diagnose easily because it is very classical and it does not need any particular examination or test but we have some id of urticaria which we are calling as urticarial vasculitis, means there is an autoimmune element to the urticaria, that is the rashes last for more than 24 hours in more than one particular area. Then we need to do one particular Skin Biopsy to see whether there is a blood vessel involvement of the urticaria. What are the Dangers of having Hives? One is something called as Angioedema or the swelling of hands feet, face which may extend into the tongue area causing difficulty in breathing. This is something dangerous when you are having Hives. Another thing is abdominal angioedema where there is an allergy in the gastrointestinal tract, and there is associated vomiting and diarrhea, which could lead to electrolyte imbalance. This is another problem with Hives the third is when it is a component of another underlying autoimmune disease. We cal this as urticarial vasculitis this could be indicative of something happening inside the body, which is causing these things to attack your body, your tiny blood vessels inside your skin. It has to be diagnosed with skin biopsy. These are the common dangers of hives. But let me tell you most commonly urticaria is a benign and it does not have any complications in about 90% of the patients is they do not grace any of the problems, but if you feel if you are getting any swelling and if the rashes are lasting for more than 24 hours, or they are associated with severe pain, it is time to meet a dermatologist who can diagnose these complications of hives, using safe test and teat them so that you can get good improvement from the symptom.
