    I’ve been woodworking, building and fixing for years, but I still like watching these types of “basics for beginners” videos. Maybe it’s just easy to get set in your ways, forgetting the fundamentals leading to mistakes like you mentioned cutting on the wrong side of the line. I still do that sometimes too John. I think these basics videos are just as valuable for experienced craftsmen as they are for beginners. Looking forward to more from this series.

    miter saws can create some tearout, a little on the bottom side, but especially on the side facing the fence. you can create a zero-clearance insert for the bottom quite easily by using the stock insert as a template. since most cuts are at 90 and 45, creating one for the rear can be useful. you lose a bit of cutting length, but it will help if you need the best finish on the cut.
    another one is increasing the cut width. my 12" miter (non-sliding) only cuts about 8" wide, but if i add a sacrificial piece underneath i can increase it to 9 1/2".

    I got my first Single bevel, sliding, mitre saw - also a Bosch - 6 weeks ago and have built a fence and three garden gates using it. It was invaluable and I wish I’d bought one before. I had to learn all those tips in your video through a multitude of other YT channels so great for a newbie to have them all in one video.
    I would be good to do a follow-up video on some more techniques in using the saw. For example, to do half lap joints using a depth gauge. Doing multi cuts etc. And offsetting the cuts using a spacer attached to the back fence to allow for the rounded cut of the blade.
    Thanks for the video.

    John really can explain things well.

    I bought a beville sliding mitre saw last year and I've only just unlocked the beville on it, damn it was stiff!! Love my mitre saw, it was my favourite tool till My kids bought me a Bosch Router for mother day but then hubby bought me a Ryobi nail gun!! Great tip with the mitre angles, I hadn't realised that either.

    This may already have been mentioned, but an important tip for me is to clamp your board when cutting a mitre. If you only hold it with your hand (even firmly), the board may move during the cut giving an inaccurate result.

    The first thing anyone needs to do is to “true up” the saw. All commercial mitre saws are not 100% square out of the box, and require some adjustment, and the cheaper the saw, the worse it’ll be, and the harder the adjustment. One will need shim material ranging from fractions of mm to 1mm. Also, you should tell people the proper speed of how to push the blade through the wood.

    Great tips John! Any recommendations on a respirator for cutting/sanding? I'm building a folding picnic table (based off
    April Wilkerson's design) and spent the weekend sanding and assembling the first half. I've been using a disposable mask and working outdoors but know it's not good enough so would appreciate any recommendations (of course if there's an affiliate link there's no harm there)! Cheers!

    I like to keep a cheap 4 inch - ??cm paint brush handy to help keep saw dust away from the stop block .

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1 inch is roughly 2.5cm or 25mm so 4 inches is 10 cm or 100mm

    Good video. Would have been worth covering checking your mitre saw out of the box as found my 90 deg wasn’t quite 90 deg so I spent quite a bit of time getting it square with an engineers sq. Its pretty shocking you spend money on tools whose primary function is to cut sq or angles and they’re not sq out of the box. It’s a real issue with beginner budget friendly tools for us hobby weekend wood workers
