Thanks for the info on Luban spokeshaves. Because of this video, I ordered a set. At first, I couldn't get them to work at all. After watching this video a few times, I got all the kinks out. They work great now. Thanks for all the help.

Yeah, my biggest headache is trying to perfect hand sharpening the secondary bevel. You make it look so easy!

Very informative video. I love spokeshaves but i prefer to use them on the pull. Puling seems to give me a little better control.

I did not know that you adjust them with hammer blows. Thanks for the instruction.

Thank you John! I’ve got a really cheap spokeshave that clogs up. I think I’ll try the trick to file the mouth a bit and see if that helps. I’ve tried sharpening and adjusting, but it clogs up really bad and is just not useable. If I can make that problem go away, then I’ll have a functional tool! :)

Did you ever try sharpening knifes on the scary system. If so maybe you could do a quick demo.

Thanks very much for the information John, I checked out my Spokeshave and sure enough the throat was really tight. Never entered my head to look at that ( Pillock). I will file it tomorrow. Thanks again pal. Regards Jim.

What is a right gap size for the blade vs mouth opening? I believe mine could be too much and I don't think there's anything I can do about it :/

great video. I must ask the question, why when you pay good money for a plane/spoke shave/chisel don't they come ready to use straight from the box? You don't have to sharpen drills or saws so why don't the manufacturers sell you a proper tool that is sharp. Its not because the edge could get nocked off as you could say that for drills or saws. Just how miffed you would be if after buying a brand new drill you find that it needs to be sharpened before you drill the hole you want. Thanks for posting

I suppose its a cost thing and the fact that most woodworkers have their own preference when it come to sharpening so just grinding a primary bevel is all they want.

Hey John, could you do a video/series with tips regarding getting started woodworking particularly in Ire. Recently gifted a Mitre saw and I've a few random hand tools but would like to know what tools I should buy first and how much to expect to pay for them.

a warning about these spokeshaves-they are meant for very fine work-they have incredibly tight mouths. both flat and round. they work very well, but this is something to consider when buying. (this is for the lie nielson ones, didnt realize these werent those, they look so close.)
