I've been using oops paint as a backing glue, I have lots of it in my garage, they're extremely cheap to get at the Hardware store.. 1/2 gallon does a full 3x4 rug. and it actually absorbs into the yarn and fabric locking it together tight. so tight I can't pull them apart. it's thin, malleable, and simple cleanup.
Thank you so much for that waterfall tip! I was having problems with my backing fabric as it would fray, but with that strip technique that you suggested, it now gives my rugs a clean finish. Appreciate it.
Thank you so much for this video! I just finished making my first rug and I didn’t realize how difficult the backing was going to be! Was the most frustrating part, and the part in the least happy with on my rug. Will look at getting some twill tape for my next project!
Could you maybe do a more in depth video of applying the twill tape? I struggle with it a lot. Would be nice to see it done on a rug with a lot of curved edges
The problem for these adhesives is that they are not machine washable. This is an issue for small bathroom rugs or for pillows. Fiber Lok is machine washable and I use it for small projects because they are machine washable and dryable. Unfortunately, it is is very expensive, so for larger projects I use Roberts. It can stand up to machine cleaning with a hand carpet shampoo machine.
Thank you so much for continue to share! I’m about to start my tufting business and with not a lot of financial resources I’m trying to avoid any unnecessary mistakes 😊 your video reply help!
So glad I found this vid, just got done with a rug, and my little strips of my backing keep peeking out beyond my twill tape, and I’d have to go trim more after I added my twill tape. Definitely going to try a couple of your methods. Thank you for the fantastic vid.
Thank you for making an update video on this! Love your rugs and helpful videos!! ( Was also wondering about that spray adhesive not being available, so I’m glad you don’t use it anymore!)
thank you so much for posting again! I recently came to see if you had another video because your videos keep me tufting and constantly learning new ways of things!
Hi AJ! I love your videos! They are very informative especially for me who is brand new to the game of tufting. 🙂 I do have a question where do you get your yarn and do you have a favorite brand? 🙂 Thank you and love the videos! 💜
I am new to tufting and just had finished tufting my rug and this video has given me hope to finishing this rug well. I just have a question..did you try using anti slip material for your rug backing??
Dang, that first solution is exactly what I've been looking for! I've tried a different method from somewhere else and my finishes always look so ugly! Thank you! =D
Hey thanks for the video I have been trying to decide on what would be the best method for finishing my rugs. I’m just starting out but I really want to make sure that I’m making high quality rugs. Do you recommend using the AAT-1132 just starting out? Or should I stick with Roberts?
I loved this video! As always it's so informational! Do you use both the action bac fabric and the final backing cloth for your pieces? I saw they were both linked so just wondered if they're both used 👀 and does the final backing cloth have a no slip effect when the rug is used on the floor? Thanks so much!
Very helpful tips and insights~ I'm a beginner in tufting and I learned a lot! thank you very much!! ❤ Out of curiosity (inquiry).. I know this might sound dumb/weird, but I wonder what would happen if both the Robert's and 1132 is mixed together as one mixture for the gluing of the carpet's back?
Hi! Love your videos and all the insight you provide. Have you ever worked with Holdens liquid latex? I’ve used it a few times for some of my projects and I was wondering if you have any experience or insight on using that.
Hi! thanks for sharing useful information about tufting :D i´m starting doing it, so please if you can help me with something... do you recommend washing these rugs? if so, how? (I mean with which products in order to prevent the yarn to falls off in the process) , and if not, then how do you recommend cleaning them up ?
Do you know what other adhesives people use for the twill tape besides hot glue? I'd worry about the durability of hot glue more than any of the other components. And do you have any recommendations for how to find a local supplier of AAT 1132?
Hi got a question the rug you make that is going to be in a bathroom you use the the aat glue can i use the other one the robert you think it would work like for a bathroom to?
I've been taking my rugs off the frame and applying the backing on the ground... am I making a huge mistake that is going to bite me later? Thanks for your videos!
will it be simple to roll and fold a rug since the rug becomes more stiff after using the AAT1132? am in Ghana and new to Rug, I have finished my 1st practiced Rug and it's left on the Frame. the glue is expensive to import to Ghana. hope to hear from you
Thanks for the video, it's super helpful! Can I ask what the average drying times for both compounds? I recently made a rug with roberts 3095 and i let it try for 24 hours and i couldnt tell if it was just very tacky or if i didn't let it dry long enough.
AAT 1132 dries pretty quickly - somewhere like 6-12 hours I'd say. Roberts 3095 takes longer to dry and I don't think it ever fully cures-in my experience, it's always a little tacky which is why I use it as an adhesive for my backing fabric
I'm using roberts 6700 which dries slightly tacky, along with a kinda "mesh-like" cloth backing... is there going to be an issue of the rug sticking to the floor (and ruining the floors) if people are stood on it? edit: should I add an additional, solid, backing?
Did you ever switch to an adhesive that didn’t have a ton of fumes? I watched a video from you about a year ago and you said you were thinking of switching to a different adhesive. 😊
Hi, I'm watching through your videos and I was wondering if you are still using the rubber backed felt or if you solely use backing materials from tuft the world now?
Thanks for the update, I'm going to try this new method with both adhesives. I'm in the market for a new gun, what do you think about the 2-N-1 tufting guns, or is it better to just purchase them separate?
I've struggled when using the green two in one machine.. It's a lot clunkier. I find it easier to have a cut pile and a loop pile so I don't have to change any of the mechanics of my machine and risk breaking it.
@@AJMAKES137 Thank you I purchased a new pile gun I figured the same thing, that I didn't want to have to change the mechanic after looking at each gun, thank you so much for for your response... Happy tufting!
Fantastic video. AJ i have a question, what do you think would be a healthy method to glue a rug inside? I see u have a mask and goggles on, do you think that glueing outside even tho its raining would affect the glue quality against the rug? I live in Vancouver, where it rains a lot and we dont get a lot of sunshine, I m wary of glueing outside bc of this but I also dont want to keep glueing inside bc my apt is quite small and the smell of the glue gets everywhere.
If you have to glue inside, a respirator + good ventilation in a confined space is best. A lot of these adhesives give off VOC's which can be damaging when inhaled. I typically close the door of my studio, open the window, and wear a respirator 👍
Would you recommend glueing the backing right onto the wet carpet adhesive like you did or is a separate adhesive still the better option? It's hard to find good backing adhesive where I live and I've been thinking about doing it this way too.
@@CherishedCustoms yeah that's a smart move. I've been looking for a "less toxic" glue but to no avail, so I feel skipping that step would be the best option. *I gave you a follow on Instagram :)
So glad you have an updated video now. You definitely inspired me into rug making. Quick question, when your cut pile gun is delivered from tufting gun, besides attaching the swivle, is the gun actually ready for use? or do i have to make adjustments? can’t find any info on that.
don't think we need to say it anymore.. but you and this channel have inspired myself and many others to try making rugs and these videos help so much

Whats the benefit of hot glueing vs hand stitching other than time? Could I use a whip stitch with the tape? Thanks for the great video.

What was the combo of the adhesive you used? Fabulous work BTW.
Can you use any fabric for the final backing? My local fabric store just closed, so I might go looking in thrift stores.
hey Aj, how much in weight approximately do you say you used from each glue in the final backing?

Very useful video! How long does it take to dry?
Since the Roberts 3095 stays tacky, if you were to step on these rugs as intended, would the adhesive squish onto the floor?
is your twill tape 1 inch thick? :)
I saw someone use a blow-dryer to speed up the glue drying time. Is that a feasible option?
Hello! did you make any modifications to your gun when it arrived? Or did you just use it as it came?
What width twill tape do you recommend?
Would like to know as well.
