As the 4th-generation barber at Lucky Star Hair Dressing Salon, Selvam has spent almost half his life pursuing perfection at the expense of his health. Yet, he has no regrets, and continues to serve his customers the way his father did - offering a simple, no-frills haircut and a listening ear to everyone who walks in.

Hello, this is the director/ producer and I would like to share some of my thoughts while producing this video.
To be honest, I don’t hold any strong emotional connection towards barber because I really hated having my hair cut since young.
What drew me to Selvam, however, were his words of wisdom and confidence. For someone who had his dreams of becoming an aircraft engineer crushed, I wondered what it’s like emotionally and mentally, to be, in a way, forced to take over his father’s business. His perseverance and strong sense of pride towards his craft, even if that is not his initial dream, is what touches me the most. It’s the cliche saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
Most of our parents and grandparents’ generations had to give up their dreams for their family but they always give their best in what they do. That’s what make them great craftsmen ❤️
Life is all about choices. Selvam showed me that not everyone has the privilege to pursue their dreams, but we can always choose to make the best out of our situation.
I hope this video can become a source of motivation for whoever who faces similar struggles out there.

i think this guy (selvam) try to cheating on us..he not mention what exactly date and month in 2015..when he said he cutting lee kuan yew hair.. lee kuan yew passed away on 23 march 2015..he must mention the exactly date..when he said he recevied call from lee kuan yew and ask that guy (selvam) to cutting lee kuan yew hair..poor that selvam i think he is going cheating on us

I dread to think how genuine 10 minute haircuts look like. Even QB House doesn't take 10 minutes.
Have passed by his establishment for like 15-20 years, didn't realise such a dedicated man plied his trade there.
Oh wow, used to cut my hair there when I was studying nearby at ngee Ann polytechnic. He goes above and beyond what normal barbers do with a good massage and cologne. Such a nice guy he even gave us discounts as he knew we were students, i just wish he wasn't so far as I live in the east and have graduated 😢😢
This was very normal thing in Tamil nadu saloons... those until 2000s days.. today not the case we miss those days too !!
I like the way he describe the last part, no one is above you. He can talk deep stuff and think well.... Respect.
A practitioner must have an authentic pride in his skills honed over many years, regardless of wealth and social status. I am encouraged by your story, Mr Selvam.

10 min is too quick, meant to be cutting hairs, not cutting grass.
i got into so many argument with those barber that think speed is everything. actually, no, going to barber is always like visiting your friend and a social place, no need to rush or be quick. customer hair is not grass. heck, even u need patience to trim the grass, what more customer hair?
some really bad hairdressers will just decide to use a hair clipper and call it done. cut your hair like a vacuum. no precision, you came out regretting it.
But are you willing to pay more for the service? You can’t expect to go to those 10 min barber expecting superior service, their business is based on volume
@@damontan4749 its funny u say that.. quite alot of barber charges like 15$ these days or more, rarely less. And on the contrary, 10$ saloon have pop up like mushrooms.

I'm lucky enough to only need a couple of visits (2 so far) to the barber's in my entire life. My mom is the one who does it for me. She used to work at a salon in Beauty World also. I could request any style I wanted, but I always find myself preferring the same old hairstyle 😂

@@MrBJK9611 Indeed. LKY was hospitalised from 5 feb 2015 onward. Also knowing LKY style, there is no way he will call the barber himself if he really needed a cut. This story is a lie. I dare to state.

When you're not in search for something you tend to miss out a lot of things.I also used to go to this old mall,i have gon there countless time and I never notice this beautiful flower shop.The auntie is so nice and the flower is beautiful.I ask her why i never see her shop and she told me she have that flower shop there for 8 years already.And i have come to that mall about 6years ago.
Since then i always buy flowers from her and bunch of seeds.Shes a sweet woman.
A rundown old shop tend to hide good people.
