Lee Kuan Yew is credited with building Singapore into a Tiger economy. But he did more than that. Lee passed his ideas on to Deng Xiao Peng at their famous meeting. That meeting transformed Deng who went on to develop the Juggernaut that is today’s China. Lee might just be the most influential man of our times.
yes, he also encouraged us a lot, he said the singaporean chinese are descendants of the chinese farmers and rough labors, but the chinese living in China, many of them are descendants of elites, so we should do better than Singapore, we know he said so just because he is humble man and just tried to give us confidence. Full respect to him.
@troy krentzs Democracy has never brought peace and prosperity to any country that's not advanced enough. In Singapore, we have a very good example. When we were in the 1960s and 1970s and 1980s.... we were a poor nation that's just struggling to feed ourselves and find enough jobs for our population. We had to overhaul our education system, our infrastructure and fend for ourselves..... and also not forgetting to integrate the different races in Singapore (CHinese, Malay, Indians...) Those were the nation-building times and it could not be achieved if we had a 2 party-system like the USA. We would have been destroyed from inside, probably imploded! So, I pretty much agree with Lee when he said that Democracy will only work when 80% of the population is well educated and you have a middle class that 50-60% of the population. If not, any politician can just promise the Heavens and the Garden or Eden during the election campaign and just get voted in. In fact, elections are just really a beauty contest! It does not actually bring in the best person for the best job.
@troy krentzs I think that what you found out, isn't a surprise at all.... at least not for me. The fact is this, if you are a developing or under-developed nation, ruling by a committee is never a good idea. You would need to have a decade or more of stable growth, educate the population with, minimal policy changes and disruption to strategy. After that, you can then slowly build a educated middle class and have an advanced economy. With an advanced economy, that's when you are developed and democracy will work. Without all these pre-condition, holding elections every few years is a big distraction and changes in the way government was run from one administration to another, is a big disruption in policy. Maybe those believers in democracy and "freedom" will disagree with me. But if you are feeling hungry, cold and desperate...... will all these matter? Can a vote or the democratic process bring food to the table, put a roof over my head and assure me that next month, i have enough money to pay my bills and rent?

So basically: -remove reservation based on caste and religion -Make it so that big infrastructure projects funding are all digital, thereby reduced the chances of corruption by a lot. -Heavy penalty for indulging in corruption if found guilty. -Not necessary to have a common language, but encourage public and school children to learn 3-4 languages. -Treat every religion as equal, this means the removal of minority privileges like waqf board and separating religious institutions from government. -mandatory physical fitness program for male teens. -Reframing judiciary to make it efficient and truly just, as many mla, mps get away with indulging in crime. Looking at this list, it’s basically impossible to even accomplish half of this as the obstructions are way too much. If you wish to live a good life, working hard and leaving India is the best option for you. But if you wish to stay and contribute, then you must be resilient and courageous.
I don’t know why but after reading your comment, I decided to think about every individual point and write out my reaction to them. I wrote this comment entirely because it helped me think about things and come up with my own ideas. And since it is because of your comment I had these thoughts, it is only fair to let you see them. I hope you will not take offense at any of whatever things I have typed. 1. Did you skip the part at 3:00 where he speaks about India’s need for a “fair leveled field for everybody.” You ask for the removal of reservation based on caste because that benefits you, as it has benefitted you since the birth of Hinduism. And it is because of caste, I believe, we did not see enlightenment while Europe flourished because it truly based itself off of meritocracy, something you apparently admire. 2. Digital ≠ Non-corrupt. It is highly likely it’ll result in corruption on the higher level, by those who are in control of the digital-bureaucratic-space. Much like how if a big politician r*pes a person, he can contact the IG or DIG and get the matter hushed. 3. I do believe that heavy penalties will help in curbing corruption, but heavy penalties are already being levied on bureaucrats and it still happens on a very large scale. It is the rate of corruption being caught with evidence that is needed. I suppose the focus should be more on surveilling the bureaucrats, but I wouldn’t know how they’d do it. And in the end, it is the entirety of the system that is rotten to the core. Would thieves install CCTV cameras in the houses they target earnestly? 4. I am someone who speaks 4 languages fluently. My mother tongue, the language that I grew up speaking, Hindi and English (which I learned by taking in different forms of media from a very young age). Hindi and English, I taught them myself. I spent some time in my teenage years in Hindi-speaking regions, and because of that I now have a colloquial understanding of the language. In my hometown, where Hindi is spoken by a large number of people, I speak more fluently and with a proper North Indian accent, something which most people here cannot despite being so familiar with their media. Similarly, I have been to highly rated private English medium schools where I have noticed students who, despite studying for their entire lives, simply could not speak good English. In such schools, you cannot really blame the teachers for not knowing English or not teaching the students because they did what they believed can be done in a schooling system to teach their students English. I related all of this to you because I want you to think about how your understanding of language came about and I want you to think how school are truly inefficient in teaching children languages. What LKY is talking about is a linguistic connection between the ruler and the ruler. Imagine Hitler speaking a language which only a part of Germany could understand. Had it been the case, there was no way could he have garnered such a following. Take, for example, how Bengal and other non-Hindi regions remain somewhat unaffected by the BJP system (as compared to the Northern India). Part of the reason is language. The only effective way to combat it is to, perhaps, turn the entire subcontinent into a continent with a governing body resembling the EU. But that brings with it even more complexities. And this country was built on a united idea for numerous reasons, some I can perhaps never possibly grasp. 5. A point that sounds good but is meaningless. In a country such as ours, where poverty and hunger are main concerns, “mandatory physical fitness programs for male teenagers” is a luxury. I don’t know how anyone implement it, and moreover, why. 6. Once again, a sentence that sounds good but is, in truth, meaningless. The judicial system is one that runs on the Socratic method. Every second of its existence is its attempt to reach to a point where justice, this very vague abstraction that has no concrete existence, is reached. “Reframing the judiciary” is a monstrous task that only takes place at the birth of the creation of a state. For the next revolution to happen in the judiciary, there will have to be a civil war. And to top it all off, you’re advising people to leave india if you wish to have a good life. To me, it is something that is only said by people who have never truly loved this nation or its people. You may call it practical, and I may be inclined to agree with you, but I do believe that to follow it through or to even advice anyone, is to put yourself in the position of a scoundrel. And I mean no offense. I, too, am a scoundrel in many ways.
There are quite a few people who have their opinions about LKY and India. But none of you are qualified to say a single word. The only people who are qualified, are people who have taken a poor region with limited resources, and tried, over the period of a few decades, to build it into a properous city/country. Whether you succeeded or failed, only then are you a peer of LKY, and then you can voice an opinion with some weight. In fact, I doubt any of you have even taken leadership of the local youth club or football team. If you are to scared to take a down and out local team, and build it into a top tier team, you shouldn't even think about offering any opinion about someone who has built a nation. Why are people nitpicking at Mr Lee's statement of "British made India"? Please listen before disputing him. He clearly knows the Indian civilization has been around since way before the British came and colonized the place. He recognizes India's diverse culture, and languages. What Mr Lee really is saying that India today is limited because of how the British granted independence to India. It was granted in a way that did not recognize all the complexities of India, and so now., India has issues. In other words, he is actually saying, the British ruined India. As a Nigerian, this scares me. In a our country, we don't have a single majority Ethnic group. In fact the 3 major ethnic groups are at same. Then we have 100s of Minorities. And we have fought civil war, this creates divide. And we are divided along religious line. Now during election, politicians exploits this to their advantage. Divide the country along Ethnic and. The statement doesn't mean that diversity increases unity. It's just a narrative. The idea of India. India is a body of people , but depending on who you ask the body of people has never been the same century to century. We have changed , diversified our cultures , created and learned new foods and music and art. And we thrived. The decline we see today is a temporary phenomena. A few hundred years is a tiny part in the time frame of our civilisation that has endured and nourished itself on diversity. We survive because we are diverse. Diversity of opinion, diversity of culture. All of it breeds strength. USA is so successful because it accepts even more diversity than us. Efficiency of modern homogenous nation states like China is good only for a boom bust cycle. But the Chinese civilisation thrived because they absorbed Mongols, Koreans, Machu ,Uighurs and many others into them. Same as any major civ.

@Digonto India was directly governed by Britisher for about 90 years. They tried their best eradicate India's ancient scientific education system and replace it with their system. Indians defied Britishers Industrial attempts by boycotting foreign goods. In return Brits looted India to make the last man poor so Indians are forced to adapt their lifestyle and culture to make India a market.
@Digonto Yes you are right. Best was to disintegrate India and gave complete autonomy to 20-30 states but get one single army so that these states don't fight with each other. However there was no freedom in 1947, It was mere transfer of power from British Queen to British Puppets. Later goons hijacked and took over the Minister posts and system is bloody corrupted noe
China and India have so many difference on surface level but when you dig deeper, you'll realise that the social fabrics of China isn't so different from India. Different language, different beliefs, different clans/caste residing in one large nation which can be unified and divided as well. With great effort, I’m reasonably certain that’s LKY could eventually achieve similar results with India as in Singapore: it would take him about 14, 000 years, but I’m sure he could do it.
LKY had the most difficult job on earth; choosing what's best for the people and country at a time when the options available weren't exactly the best picks. Singapore being small with very limited resources, had to make sacrifices along the way in order to survive and succeed. Looking back, sure, there were mistakes along the way. But don't forget, those were very challenging times back then and perfect solutions were not always available every time.
Believe me...if you do a little bit reading...unbias....you will find it was at that time when global economy was coming out of US's & EU's post WW2 economy build up. It was like a wave, you ride carefully on it...don't get into conflict, ride along the capitalistic wave...as such many countries benefited. One big blunder was his narrow prejudicial mentality not opening the door to more foreigners rather just Chinese from Malaysia and surrounding countries. At a time when EU & US opened their doors to anyone from anywhere in the world....they don't need to be wealthy...too many say...
Boufendi Ilyas if not of LKY, Singapore would be just another Malaysia, Thailand or Indonesia .. or even just a small brother that needs to look up to these brothers with its citizens kowtow to them as well... like it or not, this is a fact
Boufendi Ilyas that's not narrow prejudice decision he made, It's a careful plan to ensure who should be allowed into the country, simply put that as quality control, if we don't that, probably we will just end up like any other country with social unrest.
Boufendi Ilyas and u probably should know the state of EU and US is pretty bad now, and because they open up to too many foreigners, when time gets rough, these foreigners just packed up and leave just like that.i believe you are one of those who just come for the sake of the benefits the host country can give u,when time are rough or you are done, u people leave ,with no sense of gratitude.
Boufendi Ilyas That's just silly. If anything, LKY was judged by our people as too OPEN to foreigners. If the opposition had their way they would put in their Singapore first policy and the door will slam shut. I suspect good policies and good governance is not difficult in theory. After all political science is an established field. The devil is in actually executing the policies. More likely we succeeded because our neighbours continuously stab themselves in the foot and investment had nowhere to go but here.
India needs a leadership like that of LKY or Xi... and yeah lots of re-educate camps yup... you have to have a steel ball leadership and governance system.
Easy. India just need to do 5 things. 1.English as the only main language, integrate education in a similar way with Singapore. 2. Meritocracy - wipe out all race based policies, implement need based policies. 3.No religion involvement in state policies. 4.Open up the economy fully. 5.Allow easy merit based immigration. India will rule the world for another millennium. Corruption will be wiped by itself. Unfortunately, no one has the political will to implement the policies.
My fellow Indians in the comment section have an inflated sense of India's achievements. even Modi can only do so much. Farmers protest, nuisance @ JNU, still prevalent obsession with dirigisme and reckless socialism among university intellectuals(primarily the ones engaged in soft sciences), arbitrary bureaucracy driven policy that have crushed meaningful entrepreneurial activity unless its by large corporates, all these point to the same thing. Modi has come the closest to ruling India like it is a real country, and not merely just an Idea. india even between states is not economically integrated enough. Those who disagree are the ones who fail to understand India. Economic prosperity can only be brought forth by Chief ministers of States, among the reasons why Gujarat under modi had phenomenal economic growth was just that, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and even Kerala have shown that the policies drafted and executed at the state level will produce favorable dividends than ones dictated by N.Delhi. N.Delhi should act as the facilitator/manager and draft policies and leave the implementation to the states, while monitoring there progress and intervening only in support of the states. and in terms of national integration, i'd suggest looking at the Germans. Bharatmala and more importantly the various DFCs and Sagaramala are excellent projects to further a nationally integrated transport network for the movement of goods and people, the EOB ranking helps but there is light years to cover still on that front, but the bureaucracy especially at the state level has to be exponentially more flexible and responsive to the needs of entrepreneurs and citizens. ll things considered India will need at least the entirety of this century to catch up with where China is in terms of per capita income and thats nothing compared to the prosperity of what the western states have achieved. Maybe my grandkids will be fortunate enough to live in a middle income country(somehting tells me that as soon as we reach 4k in pci with modest inequality, we'll declare ourselves as a middle income country and i fear an India that is perpetually trapped in it).

Germany in the 1800's was in the same situation, and they built their country. If India faces some great enemies, and has the will to sacrifice a few million people, it can get the job done.

So basically:
-remove reservation based on caste and religion
-Make it so that big infrastructure projects funding are all digital, thereby reduced the chances of corruption by a lot.
I am willing to sacrifice everything to do this.

And so, he actually does agree with all of you so I have no idea why you are all disagreeing and disputing him when he says the same thing you are saying. Just because of one word "made".

Religious line. We keep going round around. However they did not succeed to sway people away from ancient science. Railway was just an attempt to make India an Industrial colony. Indians defied Britishers Industrial attempts by boycotting foreign goods. In return Brits looted India to make the last man poor so Indians are forced to adapt their lifestyle and culture to make India a market.

China and India have so many difference on surface level but when you dig deeper, you'll realise that the social fabrics of China isn't so different from India. That costed 65 million lives in china. It would be greater figure in India.
He is a great man .. who knows so much about our country.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew was indeed a very smart man. Right on all points, including really saying that don't compare India with Singapore. It's like if Bombay was one country. He's very realistic! He's partly wrong on saying that India is a British concept. He's technically correct but the Nation of Hindustan, Hind, Bharat-varsha is couple of millenia old while British carved out India only 74 yrs ago & its native people "Hindus" let them do it. Hindus as in the people from this vast sub-continent 'Hind' not the religion Hinduism.
Who says india is thousands of year old. Dont be a fool my friend
Bollocks, India did not exist as a cultural or political entity before the British. Even Hindustan, as a name was given to you by the Persians
Hindu like hindustan and even the word india are exonym a name given to us by outsiders its similar to calling the indegenous people of America , Indians or thinking of them as being part of one big nation before the Europeans colonized America .India with its present day borders isn't 1000s of years old.q single nation wouldn't have the diversity india has
@@allovdem lmao India's original name is Bharata which can be found in the Vishnu Purana (400BCE) not hindustan...so don't bark unless you really know what you're talking about
@@allovdem bullocks india did exist as a cultural entity and they had high respect for their land (Source: Al-biruni's writing), the original endonym for india is bharat (west of indus, east of black forests, south of himalayas extending downward to the southern seas [source: Vishnupuran and many more]) even the british colonizers themselves had written that multiple rulers in the past were constantly striving for political unity (Chandragupta Maurya, Samudragupta, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj etc) in the whole land. It was only achieved post independence after sardar patel. Try defining 'woman' properly first.
Thank you Lee Kuan Yew
hopefully Madagascar will have leader like him
No corruption and integrity.
best people for the best jobs
a fair playing field for everybody
The Chinese in the comment section have no idea what they are talking about .If you don't know india then don't speak about it
Hinduism 🕉️ is one of the factors that connect majority of indians. if we want to separate their are so many reasons but if we want to live together and grow it is one of the reasons. Disclaimer- it is not a communal statement so don't comment if you have any communal query related to this statement.
He is incorrect about disconnects between Tamil and Punjabi. Its not a superficial country. Sanskrit is the basis. Revive Sanskrit. He read the leftist history of his times.
@Dhawal Yerne
No connection yes. But the culture had the same dharmic roots
@Dhawal Yerne that's why the European Union. But we are more United as civilization.
Lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Indian subcontinent is literally like a Europe of Asia. This subcontinent is diverse in all aspects. India became a political entity during British rule over the Indian subcontinent. Before British India just a geographic term like Africa, Europe, Caribbean islands, Arabian peninsula. etc. Yes ofcourse British never wanted to United India. But British atrocities is a main reason for indian nationalism history of British raj is literally like a two side of the coin.
India is so huge with so many diverse population. The dialects itself runs in the thousands. The only language that each Indian states can communicate with each other is English ... which is not India natives language. The caste system which is entrenched in Indian tradition is not going away too soon. The answer is no....not even Singapore style is suitable for India. India must find it's own leader and method to move forward.
In a similarly polite way, the questioner through his question shows that the IAS has not equipped him with any intelligent understanding India, her culture, history, philosophies other than what the British and Muslim marauders did to deprecate her.
Seriosuly very sad to see the inferiority complex in the people chosen to run such important and pertinent positions and power
spot on sir, well said. IAS types just have COMMIE British Raj endorsed education. Bureaucrats are the reason India isn't doing as well as it can.
How to stop a person from running ?? not by building barricades but putting a small stone in the shoe. That stone in the shoe of BHARAT is this bureaucracy who have been taught nonsense by the commie education system.
@Bharat Gothwal Yes u are correct its British Raj education which demeans BHARAT and Hindus. Now that programme taken over by COMMIES. Look at UPSC syllabus its karl marx all over the place and only leftist writers & view points in most non-science subjects. Communist thought is all about inverting and destroying culture and morality. E.g. rebel against parents and teachers. Invert and destroy.
