I opened for Ricky in Norfolk, NE in 1971. He had his new band and they sounded, to me, as good as Crosby Stills and Nash. They had Excellent Harmonies, and a lot of Great new material. Nothing like what he had done before. He was boo'd off the stage with that band at Madison Square Gardens, and wrote "Garden Party" about that event. It became one of his biggest Hits ever. (I got to try on his big fur coat that he wore on TV.)
Ozzie (and Rick, David, and Harriet) were all exactly the same persons in real life as they appeared to be on the TV show - really very nice people (although I never did encounter Ozzie wearing one of his signature cardigan sweaters on the beach in Laguna) I knew Ozzie, together with Ricky and Ozzie's brother Don (screenwriter - The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, The Love Bug movies, etc.) from the mid-60s onward. We all played volleyball together at Victoria Beach in Laguna. I met Harriet a few times - a very sweet, nice lady - and met David once. The entire family was extremely nice. Ozzie (and I assume Harriet) was a teetotaler and lived a quite healthy lifestyle - he would routinely would swim out about 200 yards offshore and then swim a half-mile up and down the beach each day regardless of how big the surf was. During the summer of 1970, when I was the lifeguard at Blue Lagoon Beach, Rick's kids (twins Gunnar and Matthew who were three years old at the time and who were introduced to me by Mark Harmon (Chris Nelson's real-life brother)) used to sit on my knees - very nice kids. Ozzie died on 6/3/75 and his brother Don, who was an invited guest at our wedding, was unable to attend due to Ozzie's funeral. We recently attended the "Ricky Nelson Remembered" rock show starring Gunnar and Matthew in a tribute to their dad - great show and highly recommended to all.
The opening shot of Harriet was beautiful. I didn’t realize she was so pretty. We always watched the show along with Leave it to Beaver and Dennis the Menace, Red Skelton all the great shows of the 50’s and 60’s.
Ozzie Nelson was Red Skelton's bandleader on radio. Harriet was there too, as vocalist. Both were in some of Red's sketches. In 1944 Red was drafted into the Army, leaving a void on the radio network's schedule. Ozzie created a domestic sit-com with his wife and two child actors as their sons. It was called "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." In 1952 a film, "Here Come the Nelsons," was released. In the fall of 1952 the radio show moved to television, using their real life sons instead of actors. The TV series lasted 14 seasons..
The video showed the incorrect photo for Ozzie’s brother. His brother’s name was Don, but the photo was the Basketball Coach Don Nelson-not Ozzie’s brother.
Ozzie’s image on television was that of a not so assertive father who was slightly on the naive and at times, slightly goofy side. Ozzie in real life was very assertive a demanding. He was a perfectionist and a workaholic, definitely a different image.
@Marilyn Willett David Nelson once described his dad, Ozzie, as a workaholic and said that he could picture his dad in heaven, working and directing behind the set of a new Hollywood production.
Yes and no. WE escaped the fake mass conformity people used to showcase in public, with sketchy results behind closed walls for many. Now people aspire to authentic, high quality, true pair-bonding relationships (those who are capable of that). Others will be like Ozzie Osborne but that's OK, bc that's who they are. Many people are promiscuous light-weights and while not everyone can achieve a fulfilling, long-lasting and authentic union , it is something worth aspiring to. This is a better than the fakery of mass-conformity marriages of the 1950's. For lord's sake, those spouses talked to each other like polite, contained strangers. People sacrificed the authenticity of their self for face value marital functioning that could be showcased in public as "forever intact." I'll pass.
Ozzie was an amazingly talented, Brilliant person. He was a producer, writer, athlete, musician, musical arranger, businessperson, lawyer, & singer. He was also proficient on several musical instruments. He had his entire family perform on his tv show, but that was from a different social time. At the time, it was normal to perform as a show business family. Now, it would be considered abusive.
At 8:20--Ozzie and his brother, Don, made a film together. The picture of Don that's shown is that of Don Nelson alright but not Ozzie's brother. Rather it is of the Don Nelson (born in 1940, the same year that Ricky was born) that played professional basketball for a number of teams, most notably with the Boston Celtics. Oh, the woes of robotics.
Yes. The Don Nelson shown here was also a successful NBA coach having led the Bucks, Warriors, Knicks and Mavericks. He was coach of the year at least twice. He is alive and well and living in Hawaii. Last I heard or seen of him he had grown a long beard and was growing "grass," yes he is a marijuana farmer! He and frequent visitor Willie Nelson, who are good friends play a lot of poker. The poker games usually will include along with Willie, Owen Wilson, and Woody Harrelson. This Don Nelson scene ain't exactly the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, but more Willie, Waylon & the Boys (Owen I guess instead of the late Waylon). At least we didn't see a pic of retired NFL player/GM Ozzie Newsome!
When I saw that I thought WTF are they showing the NBA player on the CELTICS and then COACH! His son RICKY was the same age born in 1940 so showing the NBA DON NELSON is showing me they expect us to be really stupid or they don't know any better! hahaha

Same with Ricky Nelson's 1950/60s record popularity; however, one of my all time favorite songs, which came out when I was in my early twenties and was thus more impressionable and capable of understanding a song about real adult concerns, was "Garden Party." I still use the one line for many occasions: "You know you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." I will readily admit, though, in retrospect, that "Teenage Idol" was about really important issues, such as the reality of fame. Really felt bad when Ricky died in that plane crash. Pat, in Chicago

The Ozzie Nelson Orchestra got around a lot further than the East Coast. In 1932 they were engaged to perform for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter in Ames Iowa. My Dad, a member, won the door prize that night which was one dance with the band's chanteuse, Harriet Hilliard. It was his one show business story and he told it for years.
My dad was the film editor on the TV show. My dad said Ozzie only slept four hours a night and was super demanding and very controlling. My dad worked long hours and missed dinner many times. I remember going to the set and my brother was an extra on a few shows. One of the shows Ricky played guitar for a classroom.

And it was Hawks - and NOT John Wayne - who gave credit to Rick Nelson for the boost to the movie’s surprising box office success, estimating that Nelson’s name and appearance added “at least $2 million” (in 1959 dollars) to the film’s receipts
I just binge watched all of the Ozzie and Harriet shows from 1952 to 1966. It was amazing to see Ricky and David grow up and get married on the show. I have heard that Ozziw was very contrlling and wouldn't let his dons go to college because he wanted them to keep doing the show.
8:19 That is not Ozzie's brother Don. That is the former basketball player and coach Don Nelson who is not related. Ozzie's brother was a screenwriter, producer, and jazz musician.

I remember those day's and nobody's family was like the Nelson's were portrayed! Most of the early TV shows were a portrayal of what big movie and TV executive's thought family life should look like
How do you tell their story and not mention Ricky's death in a plane crash while touring, his twin sons or their cousin? This is AI. Did anyone notice how many times they repeated the same information? For example, they said twice that Bing Crosby convinced Ozzie to put the kids on the air. They do not value our time, just our clicks.
A lot of people my age had parents who called Red Skelton "Red Skeleton"!! Watch the old MGM Cartoon "Who Killed Who??". There's a scene where the detective orders a bunch of skeletons to come out of the closet. One of the skeletons was"Red:.😢😮
The AI ChatBot needs to be reprogrammed to say "Brunswick" rather than "Burlington" as one of the record labels Ozzie Nelson recorded for. As for Ozzie's saxophone prowess, son David said in an interview that his Dad was amazed at his musical career because he could not read music, could barely play the saxophone, and knew only basic chords on a banjo-ukulele. All that aside, he was universally regarded as a genuinely nice guy and a total professional by all who knew and worked with him in radio and television.
I never put together Ricky Nelson was the singer in my lifetime. I watched this show all of the time and I loved Ricky's music. I'm 67 and goes to show to learn something every day. I do study quite a bit and have a brain full of knowledge of history and physics although this plumb evaded me.
I was a child when Ricky died, but remember that night vividly as I had heard enough of his music from seeing him on music shows from the time such as "Solid Gold" that I became a tiny fan. I'd also heard his earlier hits when my Mom would tune into the "classics" station. From that I was in love with "Garden Party" & "Hello Mary Lou," but honestly would watch anytime I saw he was appearing on anything. We didn't have access back then to Disney or any channels that ran "Ozzie & Harriet," but or I definitely would have watched those too (I'm trying to now though). His twin sons Matthew & Gunnar became famous in the 90's as the rock band "Nelson." They definitely inherited the musical talent. Loved their music too & being a twin myself they immediately caught my attention...though at first I didn't realize who their dad was. I've kept up with their music even now & they apparently are really, really nice guys. I'm a huge music fan & thought I knew quite a bit & study quite a bit too but yes, always learning everyday.
4:17 Boy, your mechanical voice lost it’s credibility on that one. SKEL TON .. Not skeleton. It’s almost humorous if it was not so dense. You are hereby sentenced to watch 5 full Red Skelton TV shows as a punishment. Many of them, especially in the late 1950s, were booze optional, live tv shows.
I'm not sure if having a family role model was all bad.It gave people an image to try to keep family together. It had morals, caring parents, nice kids what's the problem.
It's all fine as long as it's not fake and turns people into mere social roles for mass conformity. A relationship model based on actual compatibility, open communication, authenticity of the self, and love (instead of social respectability for showcasing) is preferable for many today.
In David Halberstam’s book The Fifties, Ozzie is depicted as a petty jealous creep who was trying to undermine Ricky when he was achieving such success. I tend to believe that based on other sources I have read. Plus the idea that Ozzie was this intimate husband and father is nonsense. He was none of those things
Reportedly, Ozzie was a pretty tough taskmaster and very strict as a dad. Other sources claim he had a longtime mistress, and that Harriet was ... kind of a tough, chain smoking lady who liked her whiskey and cigarettes each night. Ricky allegedly went into Harlem as a very young teen to lose his virginity. Daughter Tracy was actually interviewed and said Ricky and her mother were already sleeping together early in the relationship and that she was out of wedlock. To fool the press, they pretended she was premature and even showed her in an incubator. After a while, Ricky was touring so much that when he was killed, they decided not to tell Harriet, leading her to believe he was just away touring. I think other documentaries about the family do a better job with this subject, including more details about the ugly Nelsoh-Harmon custody battles and Tracy's mother allegedly draining Ricky's bank accounts. David Nelson allegedly never forgave her for cleaning his brother out, which resulted in his constantly having to tour and use substandard equipment (like the plane that killed him). He reportefly confronted her publicly at the funeral, accusing her of murder. I'm surprised none if this info is here.
I think what's really annoying more than the robot-sounding voice, are the filler photos you're using that have nothing to do with anything. I stopped watching this after 4 minutes.
Ozzie - Born in New Jersey, received his law degree from near-by Newark? Newark is a major city in the state of New Jersey - not near-by. It is near-by New York City.
First, it's not Red Skeleton! It's Red Skelton. That's just embarrassing. Second, you talked about Dave's career later in life, but did not mention that Ricky died in a plane crash in 1985. I kinda think that's important...
Red’s last name is not pronounced “Skeleton” it IS however spoken “SKELTON”, and he was from Vincennes, Indiana, which, within 20 miles south of there, is the region’s most tasty, delectable, cantaloupes found anywhere, in the world, … the region, between Vincennes, & Evansville, Indiana, …
At 13:34 there's a puzzling picture of clown Emmett Kelly on the right, comedian Jerry Collins on the left and an unknown person in the middle. Why? And why no mention of Ricky Nelson's death by plane crash on New Years Eve in 1985?
Red Skeleton? No, it is Red Skelton. He was famous, learn your subject. Also, you show a picture of Don Nelson, the basketball player/coach instead of Ozzie's brother, Don Nelson. Are you really that lazy?
It’s Red “Skelton”, NOT “Skeleton”!
Probably an AI "voice" rather than a live narrator.

As a teenage girl I absolutely knew who Ricky was, lol.
You may have a "brain full of knowledge", but in this context it's "plum", not "plumb".
That's now Ozzie's brother Don!!!!
Harriet was never a home cook. They ate out and Ozzie dated other women when he was married to Harriette.
I'm not sure if having a family role model was all bad.It gave people an image to try to keep family together. It had morals, caring parents, nice kids what's the problem.
It's all fine as long as it's not fake and turns people into mere social roles for mass conformity. A relationship model based on actual compatibility, open communication, authenticity of the self, and love (instead of social respectability for showcasing) is preferable for many today.
tim, we now have the ever popular reality shows that showcase the entire family.
@@marymitchell8625 it is now and thanks
I think what's really annoying more than the robot-sounding voice, are the filler photos you're using that have nothing to do with anything.
I stopped watching this after 4 minutes.
Please READ the poster, as it is Red SKELTON not Red Skeleton (bones).
TV is NOT REAL LIFE. If you believe entertainment to be real, you will have a big surprise.
@ 4:55 Jamie Farr is with Red Skelton in this still.
How do you know what people think?
His name is S-K-EL-TON. I’ve always wonder to whom this announcer’s voice belonged. I now seems like some sort of male Siri and not a real person.
I thought that Harriet was a little doll mm
So I watched a thirteen minute video and found out nothing. The Nelsons are just like we see on the show lol
Ozzie Nelson and the basketball player lnown as Don Nelson were obviously not brothers. Some of your photos were off, too.
Ozzie - Born in New Jersey, received his law degree from near-by Newark? Newark is a major city in the state of New Jersey - not near-by. It is near-by New York City.
1:29 -- "Burlington "?? C'mon, man -- get your facts straight!
Irrelevant photos. AND, there is only one E in Skelton. He was never skinny enough to be a skeleton.
The family name continued with Ricky children and Dave's children in production.
Howard Hanks picture? He preferred to be called Howard Hawks.
First, it's not Red Skeleton! It's Red Skelton. That's just embarrassing. Second, you talked about Dave's career later in life, but did not mention that Ricky died in a plane crash in 1985. I kinda think that's important...
Used to watch the TV SHOW
every week while at home.
Really a great wholsome show.
Never thought they were!
Hey your right on mellons i'm from sullivan
😅SKELTON!
Stop calling people by heir last names. Call them by their first names.
That's SKELTON, not SKELETON!!
It is Skelton, not Skeleton
Red Skelton is NOT Red Skeleton....look at the spelling and pronounce it correctly!
It's Skelton, not Skeleton. There's a difference, I know it's subtle, but there's a difference.
LOL-KTS
Rio Bravo was a Howard Hawks movie. NOT Howard Hanks. These guys need an editor. And some of the totally unrelated photos!
Howard HAWKS not Howard Hanks. Skelton not skeleton. And those were pictures of Don Nelson the NBA basketdall coach. C'mon man....
However despite the "Skeleton"gaffs, which come think of it,added to the videos entertainment value, this video was well presented,"Skeleton"and all
Half of the images do not relate to the narrative. Do better!
Can't you even get Red Skelton's name right???? If you can't even research how to pronounce his name....why should we believe anything you say?
SKEL-TON
Howard HAWKS. How the hell does this stuff get by.
At 13:34 there's a puzzling picture of clown Emmett Kelly on the right, comedian Jerry Collins on the left and an unknown person in the middle. Why?
And why no mention of Ricky Nelson's death by plane crash on New Years Eve in 1985?
Skelton not Skeliton !!
Don Nelson the basketball player and NBA coach was not a member of the famous TV family.
FYI It's not Red "Skeleton"
Are you saying Red Skeleton?
Why does this guy keep calling him "skeleton"
Red Skeleton? No, it is Red Skelton. He was famous, learn your subject.
Also, you show a picture of Don Nelson, the basketball player/coach instead of Ozzie's brother, Don Nelson. Are you really that lazy?
Still trying to see what was so risqué that they "weren't so innocent." This is just BS hyping against their "family" image.
I thought they were spy's!
Red Skeleton and Howard Hanks?
Another "muck raker", to help destroy our innocents, huh.
It's Red SKELTON not skeleton!
What a pitiful attempt on tryin
Of coarse not there human like every body else
Ozzie shocked people when they found out he was Atheist.
