You can't wipe out the past if you want to make sure it never happens again. Human history is not a walk through the roses. All countries, all races, have a story that they are not proud of today. Sadly many are still playing out their inhumane horrors. If the human race wants to survive we must remember these horrors so they don't happen again.

On a semi not really related note, I've noticed that shows that used to prominently show the WTC towers in New York have edited out those scenes in their intros or in scenes in the background. What do you think about that? I know it was traumatic, obviously, but I don't know why that would be necessary. I mean, with all the movies from Saving Private Ryan D Day scene to The Hurt Locker, I'm sure there are many trigger moments on film. Like, a movie like "Saw" can be made, but we can't handle seeing the Twin towers? Just curious what you think about that type of stuff.

This is my favorite movie of all time. I love movies. This one was so powerful and captured so much. It was such a great story. It had everything in it. I like how they included what happened in the war and how it affected the south. Since the movie was filmed in the 30s, they weren’t as reluctant to show how the whites treated black people. Scarlett is such a strong character. I love her courage. I love how she will do anything to get what she wants. I own the movie and I watch it every couple of years when I want to feel the strength that Scarlet has. The whole movie is perfect from beginning to end.

Hattie McDaniel was treated very badly by the film's premier. She wasn't allowed to attend due to segregation and the premier was in Atlanta, highly segregated until quite recently. Also, she won the oscar for best supporting actress. That was in L.A. While she was allowed to attend she was seated at a tiny table by the kitchen. I can't recall if Butterfly McQueen attended or was seated. My family boycotted the movie because the NAACP asked folks to boycott. I saw it years later and I thought it was remarkable. It did show some of what we are dealing with today.
Oh , she attended the Academy Awards and was there to receive her Oscar!! I so regret the views on segregation at that time and it was not limited to the South either because Clark Gable had to threaten not to attend the Academy Awards in Los Angeles unless Ms McDaniels was allowed to be there. I also attended Harry Ransom GWTW exhibit for the 75th anniversary. The major Scarlett Costume they did NOT have was the Famous Green & White Barbecue Dress. I had seen that dress reproduced at Disney World in Orlando in the Movie Studio Park. The info at the Disney Park said the dress had been reproduced from original patterns. I informed the Head Harry Ransom curator (who I’d met that year at the Turner Classic Movie Film Festival promoting the GWTW exhibit in Austin) about the life size reproduction of the BBQ dress. He was excited and wrote the info down and said the Ransom Center would research the dress and try to get/make their own for the future. The Harry Ransom Center also exhibited GWTW acquisitions in the 1980s when they first purchased them from MGM. I was in college in Texas in the ‘80s and saw the GWTW exhibit. There were many actual Oscar Statues exhibited that were not present in 2014, a few costumes and some other memorabilia. BUT the 2014 75th anniversary Exhibit was the BEST with movie clips, many more costumes, audition clips, David O Selznick correspondence, Matte drawings of the sets and many many photographs shot during the filming of GWTW. Just NO Oscar Statues. The Harry Ransom Center published a very thorough, comprehensive Photograph Book of the Exhibit.
I met Olivia D'Havilland on a movie set once. She was doing crossword puzzles between takes and commented that was how she alleviated boredom. It was a "disaster" movie and one of the leads came up to her and compliment her, saying "you look like shit my dear." I have photo of me standing behind her while she is talking to someone else in front of her. Wonderful woman!!

Gone With The Wind is the quintessential all- American film, in so many ways; even Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels was incredibly envious of the film... and because of its epic grandeur, imho it edge's out Citizen Kane for best Hollywood film - ever. Movies today are saturated with c.g., but in 1938, all effects were all hand-made, so to speak. Yeah, this is a great film...

The novel and film were a powerful source of bonding among my mother, grandmother, and me. We would quote lines to each other when there was something funny or emotional before us. I read the novel 3 times between 12 and 17. BTW, there are only a few obvious errors in your script, but you could get Ashley's last name right.

The Harry Ransome Center in Austin, TX, has the authentic costumes, letters, etc., of this fantastic film. I was able to see the show. What amazed me was some of the background info. The Klu Klux Klan was furious that they wouldn’t be featured in the film and made threats. The Daughters of the Civil War (or whatever it was called) demanded that the lead actress be from the South. There were also the audition taping of all the actresses who auditioned for the part, some were very famous.
BEST. MOVIE. EVER.!!! Absolutely STILL my favorite! And passed that love down to my girls! Fun clip with lots of great info! The pay disparity was truly shocking! I didn't realize the gap was THAT large! Really makes one wonder.... If every female actress at the time had just said NO! at the time, even 90 years ago, and not a single movie could have been made, what would have happened? Makes you wonder indeed! 🤔 But I am glad they didn't, especially Scarlett, Rhett and Mamie! Yes. He was a heavy smoker and bourbon drinker I believe that it was bourbon. Believe it or not. Toothpaste was considered cosmetic and not for dental health and hygiene. It wasn't until a couple decades later. They discovered that fluoride toothpaste actually prevented cavities and gingivitis.

It’s really interesting to research and see what actresses tried out for the part. It’s also fun to watch their auditions and the actresses interpretation of how Scarlett would act during the scenes.

If this was made today and Gabel and Leigh were at the same point in their careers. The differential in pay would still be there. Not because of sex but box office draw. I worked on a Bruce Willis movie, he made 14 million,. The female lead that had almost as much screen time as Willis. He made about 15 times that of the female lead. She was known at the time, but not a big name. But she became a big name a few years later. It was Sarah Jessica Parker. If i remember correctly she made 85 K . Point of fact as a boat handler i made about 35 K in the around 90 day shoot.

To me, it is interesting that the producers tried to keep Olivia kind of plained down. I really wanted to watch this documentary, but I could only take four minutes of the insanely annoying music behind the narrator before I had to leave. Whose stupid idea was it to add music. Margaret Mitchell wrote a Novel about a Narcissistic Girl, who lived during the Civil War... It was Not about Black Slavery or the Civil War... Clark Gable didn’t want to be in the movie. Many of the men weren’t that interested in being in the movie because they saw it more as a girl movie. Clark eventually pretty much was forced to do the movie. He said he’d do it but he wouldn’t do an accent.
Funny, I remember years ago hearing or reading that Clark Gable was not a very good dancer. In the ballroom scene, they put Clark Gable or Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh on some kind of platform so that the dancing was smooth. I’ve been looking and I’m finding posts and articles that it was Vivian Leigh who could not dance. But this is the first I’ve heard of it. I know I remember years ago it was said that it was Clark Gable who wasn’t a good dancer. I can’t back that up now so I guess I’ll have to go with the flow.
Why did they get other authors to help with the script and not Margaret Mitchel? Was Ms. Mitchel not available, or did they go for the famous male authors because they were … male? It was in the 1930s, so just wondering.
They asked Mitchell for help with the script again and again. But she adamantly refused to be involved. She said that when she signed over the rights to the story, it became someone else's headache and not hers. She said editing the story for publication was the worst thing she'd ever lived through and didn't want any part of the movie.

I was lucky enough to see this movie for the first time in a movie theater showing classic films. I was blown away, it was & still is the best, epic movie I have ever seen, nothing has yet surpassed it.🌹😊

Sadly many are still playing out their inhumane horrors. If the human race wants to survive we must remember these horrors so they don't happen again.

On a semi not really related note, I've noticed that shows that used to prominently show the WTC towers in New York have edited out those scenes in their intros or in scenes in the background. What do you think about that? I know it was traumatic, obviously, but I don't know why that would be necessary. I mean, with all the movies from Saving Private Ryan D Day scene to The Hurt Locker, I'm sure there are many trigger moments on film. Like, a movie like "Saw" can be made, but we can't handle seeing the Twin towers? Just curious what you think about that type of stuff.

This is my favorite movie of all time. I love movies. This one was so powerful and captured so much. It was such a great story. It had everything in it. I like how they included what happened in the war and how it affected the south. Since the movie was filmed in the 30s, they weren’t as reluctant to show how the whites treated black people. Scarlett is such a strong character. I love her courage. I love how she will do anything to get what she wants. I own the movie and I watch it every couple of years when I want to feel the strength that Scarlet has. The whole movie is perfect from beginning to end.
All these years later I saw this in a movie theater about 20 years ago. When we first saw Clark Gable on the staircase every woman in the audience went ahhhhhhhh. It doesn't fade.

When they were talking about Kate Hepburn for the role, Selznick said that he couldn’t imagine anyone chasing her for 15 years like Rhett chased Scarlet.
Hattie McDaniel was treated very badly by the film's premier. She wasn't allowed to attend due to segregation and the premier was in Atlanta, highly segregated until quite recently. Also, she won the oscar for best supporting actress. That was in L.A. While she was allowed to attend she was seated at a tiny table by the kitchen. I can't recall if Butterfly McQueen attended or was seated.
My family boycotted the movie because the NAACP asked folks to boycott. I saw it years later and I thought it was remarkable. It did show some of what we are dealing with today.
Oh , she attended the Academy Awards and was there to receive her Oscar!! I so regret the views on segregation at that time and it was not limited to the South either because Clark Gable had to threaten not to attend the Academy Awards in Los Angeles unless Ms McDaniels was allowed to be there. She faced as much discrimination in CALIFORNIA as she did in Georgia !!

I also attended Harry Ransom GWTW exhibit for the 75th anniversary. The major Scarlett Costume they did NOT have was the Famous Green & White Barbecue Dress. I had seen that dress reproduced at Disney World in Orlando in the Movie Studio Park. The info at the Disney Park said the dress had been reproduced from original patterns. I informed the Head Harry Ransom curator (who I’d met that year at the Turner Classic Movie Film Festival promoting the GWTW exhibit in Austin) about the life size reproduction of the BBQ dress. He was excited and wrote the info down and said the Ransom Center would research the dress and try to get/make their own for the future. The Harry Ransom Center also exhibited GWTW acquisitions in the 1980s when they first purchased them from MGM. I was in college in Texas in the ‘80s and saw the GWTW exhibit. There were many actual Oscar Statues exhibited that were not present in 2014, a few costumes and some other memorabilia. BUT the 2014 75th anniversary Exhibit was the BEST with movie clips, many more costumes, audition clips, David O Selznick correspondence, Matte drawings of the sets and many many photographs shot during the filming of GWTW. Just NO Oscar Statues. The Harry Ransom Center published a very thorough, comprehensive Photograph Book of the Exhibit.
I met Olivia D'Havilland on a movie set once. She was doing crossword puzzles between takes and commented that was how she alleviated boredom. It was a "disaster" movie and one of the leads came up to her and compliment her, saying "you look like shit my dear." I have photo of me standing behind her while she is talking to someone else in front of her. Wonderful woman!!

Gone With The Wind is the quintessential all- American film, in so many ways; even Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels was incredibly envious of the film...
and because of its epic grandeur, imho it edge's out Citizen Kane for best Hollywood film - ever. Movies today are saturated with c.g., but in 1938, all effects were all hand-made, so to speak.

The novel and film were a powerful source of bonding among my mother, grandmother, and me. We would quote lines to each other when there was something funny or emotional before us. I read the novel 3 times between 12 and 17. BTW, there are only a few obvious errors in your script, but you could get Ashley's last name right.

The Harry Ransome Center in Austin, TX, has the authentic costumes, letters, etc., of this fantastic film. I was able to see the show. What amazed me was some of the background info. The Klu Klux Klan was furious that they wouldn’t be featured in the film and made threats. The Daughters of the Civil War (or whatever it was called) demanded that the lead actress be from the South. There were also the audition taping of all the actresses who auditioned for the part, some were very famous.

When Scarlett goes to find Rhett in town, the place he is staying at is a brothel!! It is not named or its 'purpose' either, so they got away with it! The only other mainstream Hollywood film that shows a brothel, that I can think of is "From Here To Eternity",

Movies are set in different times, different cultures, races. I attend to be entertained or to be taken in a different world.
It’s unbelievable how many big-name actresses tried out for the part of Scarlett O’Hara. They filmed a lot of the actresses auditions while in costume. It’s really interesting to research and see what actresses tried out for the part. It’s also fun to watch their auditions and the actresses interpretation of how Scarlett would act during the scenes.
Lucille Ball was rejected by Selznick. Many years later bought out his studio.

If this was made today and Gabel and Leigh were at the same point in their careers. The differential in pay would still be there. Not because of sex but box office draw. I worked on a Bruce Willis movie, he made 14 million,. The female lead that had almost as much screen time as Willis. He made about 15 times that of the female lead. She was known at the time, but not a big name. But she became a big name a few years later. It was Sarah Jessica Parker. If i remember correctly she made 85 K . Point of fact as a boat handler i made about 35 K in the around 90 day shoot.

To me, it is interesting that the producers tried to keep Olivia kind of plained down. I would guess that was to not let her appear as attractive as Scarlette, or, possibly, not to knock the shine off of her. They failed, in my opinion.

I guess they got her because she was a popular star, and good actress. She had to have been a good sport to let them make up and dress her down, and they had to have worked at it. That face was hard to, unpretty, without drastic measures. I know Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I may be the only one who thinks that.
Check out The Adventures of Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn. Olivia doesn't look much different... she was no glamour-girl, but had the ability to project kindness and inner beauty.

Clark Gable was a very famous actor. Vivien Leigh was a relatively unknown British actress. That's the main reason for much of the pay difference. That's like saying that you wouldn't expect Tom Cruise to be paid way more than the unknown actress playing his love interest in one of her first movies. I really wanted to watch this documentary, but I could only take four minutes of the insanely annoying music behind the narrator before I had to leave. Whose stupid idea was it to add music. If this were a live event would you have music playing in the background? And especially would you have this music, which is completely incompatible with a classic movie?

Clark Gable didn’t want to be in the movie. Many of the men weren’t that interested in being in the movie because they saw it more as a girl movie. Clark eventually pretty much was forced to do the movie. He said he’d do it but he wouldn’t do an accent.

Funny, I remember years ago hearing or reading that Clark Gable was not a very good dancer. In the ballroom scene, they put Clark Gable or Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh on some kind of platform so that the dancing was smooth.
I’ve been looking and I’m finding posts and articles that it was Vivian Leigh who could not dance. But this is the first I’ve heard of it. I know I remember years ago it was said that it was Clark Gable who wasn’t a good dancer. I can’t back that up now so I guess I’ll have to go with the flow.
Why did they get other authors to help with the script and not Margaret Mitchel? Was Ms. Mitchel not available, or did they go for the famous male authors because they were … male? It was in the 1930s, so just wondering.
They asked Mitchell for help with the script again and again. But she adamantly refused to be involved. She said that when she signed over the rights to the story, it became someone else's headache and not hers. She said editing the story for publication was the worst thing she'd ever lived through and didn't want any part of the movie.
