I was very surprised to learn that not only did he write many of his songs, but he sold over 60 million albums, had 24 gold records and is the number 3 musician in the world to reach such goals. He was extremely handsome and humble as you said and we had just moved into our new house in the Dallas area in 1985 and putting up stockings Christmas Eve when I heard his plane crashed and he was killed along with his band members. A sad day for sure for all of his fans and family.
@Mary Cleve I remember his daughter, Tracy telling her story of how Eerol Flynn came to her and told her that her dad would die and wished her Happy New Year. Ricky passed away on New Years Eve, upsetting Tracy greatly. 😡
I met Rick Nelson for a TV interview at a South Texas airport a few months before his death. I was too young when he was really famous as a kid but loved his Garden Party song of the early 1970s. I was a young reporter at the time I was sent to try to get an interview with him before he had a concert at South Padre Island. I was unsure what to ask him much less approach him. He couldn’t have been nicer and gave me a good interview. I was so impressed with his kindness and it was an honor to meet him.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face!..
Ricky was one of my all time favourite singers, still is. He never seemed comfortable talking about himself, he really is a shy person for the lifestyle he was brought up in, and being such a great singer performer.

Rick was indeed, quite shy. I saw him several times. He was always a gentleman and even seemed surprised that the fans were so taken with him. He was also an excellent athlete. A tragic loss at the age of only 45,
Ricky Nelson will always be PURE Class - RIP Ricky - I watched him on the Ozzie and Harriet Show back in the 50’s - the best part of the Show was the last 5 minutes when he would sing his latest song - He was one of the greatest singers of All Time - PERIOD !!!
I loved him when he was on the show when he was young, he always had a kind of cool comeback when Ozzie or Harriet said something to him. Loved the show no fake crap just a fun family.
A beautiful man. Talented and professional. His children are equally talented. Sad that he’s been gone for so long. Heartbreaking for his family, friends and fans.
Despite the shyness he did have a tongue in cheek sense of humor. He and Elvis were in competition with each other for record sales that made each other bigger in the music world and yet respectful of what each brought to the Garden Party. Modern politicians could learn a lot from them. In the same appraisal of Garden Parties I think Rickey's rendition of "I went to a Garden Party ," to be one of the smoothest vocal deliveries of all time.
Nobody did it better than Johnny Carson. Whether you were the latest Oscar winner or the Garbage Man of the year, he put them at ease, treated them with respect and was genuinely interested.
My 1st 45rpm record was Rick's "Bee Bop Baby". I ordered it at my NJ record store in 1957 and waited for weeks for it to come in. He started me on the path of 40+ years of making music and changing my life forever. RIP Ricky Nelson....Thank you.
Got to see Rick perform 3 years in a row at the Beef and Boards dinner theater in Indy. The radio station I worked for sponsored the show, so I got to hang out backstage with him. Truly one of the nicest, humblest human beings I have ever met. He posed for pictures with my mother and girlfriend, who were thrilled. Such a class act and gone way too soon.
Rick sure was very good looking! His daughter looks and talks like him. He is definitely a combination of his parents. What a nice guy ,a true gentleman. Really sad how he died.
From what everyone has ever said about Ricky Nelson, his outstanding attributes were that he was a truly beautiful person inside and out and that he was a genuinely nice and caring guy. Rick Nelson was an amazingly gifted talent whose life was cut off far too soon. I cannot help but feel frustrated about some of the unfortunate timing regarding his professional life and bumped opportunities. If only the timing had been different in certain situations, Rick Nelson could have and should have been celebrated far greater than he had been. Nonetheless, Rick Nelson's music and legacy will live on forever.
@@martyprice8288 Elvis got deathly ill the last three years of his life. They diagnosed him with a traumatic brain injury. It gave him an autoimmune disease that destroyed his internal organs
It was nice to see that after all those years, Rick Nelson was still the same guy, quiet and shy. He deserved a far better interviewer, though. The problem is, David Letterman was a comedian long before he became a talk show host. I would have loved to see him interviewed by someone like Larry King or Charlie Rose, someone who would have gone much further than talking about whose f*****g house he lived in.

This is really cool to see so many years later. 1981 was a good year to be a fan of Ricks (Nelson and Springfield). So sad he is not around anymore but his musical legacy lives on and that is a nice tribute to him.
I'm a cousin of Ricky Nelson's. Ozzie Nelson and my father were second cousins. We Nelsons are mostly musicians and sports enthusciats. My Dad was a studio musician who played guitar with Chet Atkins, John Ritter's Dad TeX, Gene Autrey, who late in his life purchased the California Angels.I along with my husband Walter Downing worked for Norman Whitfield during the filming of Car Wash as songwriters& later Norman allowed me to work as an apprentice producer and when Whitfield/Warner Bros. disbanded that was as close as I got to fame and the excitement of learning from an iconic figure in American Music. Rick was a most gracious, talented and gentle soul. David Letterman was uncomfortable I think and he wasn't able to draw Rick into a comfort zone. I hope Dave looked back on this and felt regret for not being more congenial!
+Pat Brooks -- David Letterman has always been bad at interviewing, for some reason. So, he'd probably have to look regretfully back at thousands of interviews.
He seemed like a lovely person. We all have our faults. His kids turned out well. I still remember seeing his plane burning on the news. Really sad. Rest In Peace Ricky Nelson.
Well dang wish we could have heard him sing. I have heard him do that song tho. :-) Rick is so sweet and shy here. And what a hunk he was. HOT! There's tons of old Ozzie and Harriet shows on You Tube. I watch them all the time. Rick was so cute and funny with his lines at about age 13. This year Rick would have been 80. And I'll bet would have still had that beautiful head of hair
Letterman did a goofy interview. Dave was focused on Elvis and Ricky's friendship. He had other famous people over. Ricky was also close friends with George Harrison who would stay over at the house sometimes. Ricky's sons Matt and Gunnar used to call him Uncle George. Bob Dylan was a huge fan of Ricky's music and would often visit as well.
Rick Nelson handled that interview well. Letterman simply cannot interview because he manages to make it all about himself to showcase his off the wall humor.
Rick Nelson did handle the interview well; he played along nicely played along with Lettermans sense of humour. Of course I don't see it the way you it. Rick is clean cut. He just keeps his private life private; there is no need to expand on what everyone knows what you are doing behind private doors.
I saw Rick and his Stone Canyon Band at the Chateau de Ville - Framingham,MA. in the early 1980s. Got to shake hands with him after the concert, and he was really polite and kind. He and Elvis were two of the best looking guys in rock n roll. The kings of the pompadour!
Rick is so modest about his life .. a great Talent ... I will never forget my Mother who introduced me to his music .. I had the original Million Sellers album and it got ruined in a flood of my apt. curse you red baron !

Such a quiet spoken nice guy and tragic ending for a fine performer and I wish I had seen him perform in person. I saw his Nelson family shows as a child.

Letterman must not have liked Rick Nelson he was an ass and wouldn't even show the album except only an extremely quick glance. This is honestly unlike most musical guests he has had all during the years where he would show the albums for all to see!!
Seems like jealousy to me. Rick came from a wholesome, talented celebrity family. Rick was a great and natural talent. Rick was a heart throb, majorly, yes, GORGEOUS! Rick married a very beautiful girl from celebrity parents. Ricks entire family had their own long lasting popular TV show. Could letterman compare with ANY of that? NOT!!!
I watch Daze of Jordan the Lion's vlog the other day and he was interviewing Ricky Nelson's son Gunnar Nelson. He told some great stories about their music, the Errol Flynn house they lived in, and some other great stories about his dad. Go check it out. Thank you for sharing this video of Ricky Nelson. 👍 RIP Ricky Nelson. ❤
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face!..
Rick Nelson was not just a "teen idol." He had genuine talent. After Elvis, I would rank Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, and then Rick Nelson in that order from the 50's.
I’m 66 years old and must have used one of them years just listening to to Ricky Nelson , When I go to my see my children and walk through the door I hear his songs !!! I don’t know why but in the UK the film, “””The Wackiest Ship in the Army “”” is on regular and watch it !!!❤❤❤
So refreshing to see someone so well known who is down to earth and unaffected. Grew up listening to his songs. RIP Ricky Nelson.
Ricky Nelson was a very handsome, talented man who never showed off. He was humble and kind. They don't make entertainers like him anymore.
I so agree! I loved him as a teen and his songs and got to see him in a live show in a small venue in a showroom in Pontiac Mi!

David was young. He didn't mature much yet
Letterman was only about Letterman. If you want to watch TV that talks about the guest (item, etc.) then do like I do: watch QVC.
yes; Letterman is a suck-up and no talent. Just a snarky smart-ass. And not enough sense to shut up and have Rick Nelson talk
Letterman goes for the laughs...
Letterman is a jerk.
Asking about mirrors on the ceiling.
WHAT A LOVELY GUY RICKY IS. SEEMS SO SHY AND GENUINE.
Rick is so modest about his life .. a great Talent ... I will never forget my Mother who introduced me to his music .. I had the original Million Sellers album and it got ruined in a flood of my apt. curse you red baron !
Legend Rick Nelson...Love and Miss him.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face!..
Such a quiet spoken nice guy and tragic ending for a fine performer and I wish I had seen him perform in person. I saw his Nelson family shows as a child.
Loved Ricky Nelson...and his music. We were in high school in the late 50s and danced to Hello MaryLou, Traveling Man etc. Loved him!
Quite a lot of accomplishments under his belt by age 41 (in 1981)
Seems nice too.
My mother loved Rick Nelson when she was younger, said he was "a doll, with beautiful blue eyes."
he was so shy and calm i love that about men
OMG he was so beautiful just blinks and I melt.
This interview kinda sucked .. Dave never held up Ricky's album and was very off putting about Ricky's career ... Ricky was and is a true great Talent .. he is my personal ! Idol :) miss you Rick ! wish I could have met you or seen one of your concerts xoxo and no i am no gay !
Wish he were here
I agree Letterman could have done a better job of showing the album. Rick had to reach back to see if he could find it to show it off.
I missed you Ricky Nelson! You still my heart ❤️ I always listen your music , you and Elvis Presley the greatest singer ever love you both ❤️❤️🎤🎵
He was adorable and very talented. Whole family were
Letterman must not have liked Rick Nelson he was an ass and wouldn't even show the album except only an extremely quick glance.
NOT!!!
I saw him at Tulsa State Fair and was 14. Loved him ❤
He said "You Know" 47 times, lol. What a good guy he was. I still play his records.
Looks like he was so tense and nervous during that interview.
His face changed a lot. I love his performances👍👌
Rick was so fine
What a head of hair
Rip Ricky always will be missed 💔
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face!..
He looks so young and shy. I'm terribly in love...
Too bad Letterman could not be here tonight. Rick is a class act.
I still love this guy. Know all his songs 🎵
I read somewhere that Elvis thought Rick was one of the greats and even changed his singing style and hairdo to be more like him.
Thank you, anything new you come up with I love to see,
Rick Nelson, one of the nicest (celebrity) people I ever met.
Sad we lost him so soon.
Probably Lettermans worst moment. Makes you wonder how he EVER achieved his interview status. Rick handles this buffoon very well.
Glad you enjoyed, this one is one of my favorites. You can see Dave genuinely liked Rick and it made for a fun interview.
He is still so handsome❤
Still miss his music and gorgeous face. Yes I know he'd be old by now but bet he'd still be handsome.
Hello
Actually looking at Rick he does remind me a little of Elvis !!!!!
Ricky was in line to be what Elvis became before Elvis was big. Marketing and timing. He was never given his true time.
What a head of hair
Ricky Nelson got Rio bravo when Howard hawks wanted Elvis but Parker wanted too much money and star billing . Ricky was great in that movie
One off the best Rockn Roller, very nice
Rick Nelson was not just a "teen idol." He had genuine talent. After Elvis, I would rank Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, and then Rick Nelson in that order from the 50's.
I’m 66 years old and must have used one of them years just listening to to Ricky Nelson ,
When I go to my see my children and walk through the door I hear his songs !!!
I don’t know why but in the UK the film, “””The Wackiest Ship in the Army “”” is on regular and watch it !!!❤❤❤
Yes, he seems so kind and shy.
