    I fished with Troy on Lake Champlain this year in a costa series event. He got his limit quick and culled a few early in the day. After he was comfortable with his weight he positioned the boat and gave me multiple opportunities to try and get my limit. So needless to say, I had a good experience with him!

    One of the best Co-Angler I know fishes directly behind the boat. He asked the boater if he would leave the dash sonar on to watch. Anytime a fish went under the boat, he dropped a drop shot on it. He often caught more weight, and his back was to the pro.

    I am a bank fisherman & never fished any tournaments. I am looking into fishing as a co-angler, with that said for me personally I am gonna ask the boater before we leave the doc where exactly is off limits to me so that way we both are on the same page.. plus I would assume that everything from his steering wheel to back motor is my area to fish seeing that I am in the back of the boat.. again I never fished any tournaments. That is just me. Thank you for this video..

    Whether your "fun" fishing or in a tournament, the person in the back should use good judgement in where they cast. There is additional difficulty in running a boat all day, and the person on the front should be given adequate space and courtesy. I would defer to what rules are clearly defined by the organization running the tournament and discuss with your Partner before the 1st cast is made. If there are no clear rules, and the boater is clearly jamming or front ending you all day, then I would have-at whatever you need to do. Many people have already said it, but "Partnering" or "teaming" is the best way to make it enjoyable, and as a boater I always want to see my Partner do well. I have also had it handed to me more then once by fine anglers fishing from the back.(Hey that stings, but it happens) Less then 5% of everyone fishing is doing much more then breaking in the cash department, so some need to get over themselves. You can still be competitive, fair, and enjoy a sport we all obviously love, without being a dick in any part of the boat. Good fishing my friends!

    I always hated fishing the back. Without fail, the guy in front would make it impossible for me to fish anything but his used water with structure like this. I always did a slow burn in the back. Fortunately, we didn't have much of this type of structure and we mostly fished break lines or flats with weed clumps where both anglers had decent opportunities. But, the problem always arose when around the docks... But, in my boat, I always gave the guy in the back equal opportunities to catch fish. This was especially good when fishing team tournaments. Anymore, I'd have nothing to do with tournaments.

    I guess I'm unique as a boater as I want the best possible day for my co-angler. That being said I'm not fishing for $30,000-100,000 checks. Probably the reason I will never fish at that level. I'd rather fish small to mid-sized tournaments where the goals are friendships and enjoying god's creation. I've given my co-angler the front of the boat if he's on a hot pattern, and have also forced myself to use different strategies, both to learn, and to ensure the co-angler has a good day. Thanks for the video as I learned a few things about how professional anglers see things different.

    I don't fish major tournaments only local. As a boater whether I'm on fish or not. Prize money. Money invested. Etc. I'll always position my boat to where my co anglers have a chance to catch them. It's either I catch them or I don't vise versa to the Co. Free for all.

      Tensions can run high when there is a lot of money on the line. A pro of that caliber wouldn't get mad at a co catching fish, but a cast past the pro would most certainly draw that reaction. Wish we had more footage, but I've got no doubt that's what happened.

    This is why I fish the solo series or pick-em series only. The only rule I have as non-boater is if I see water, I'm putting my bait there. I don't care what the "unwritten rules" are. If you want or need rules, write them down. I've had boaters intentionally have me back to the dock late because I busted a bag on them. I've had boaters toss behind the back of the boats, over me when I've had a huge topwater blow-up that missed. So, if you have me as a non-boater, you better be ready for the fork, or the cake. I refuse to let you have both. I paid to be there too.

  • @fish4kbcf
    @fish4kbcf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    This is a great video with a ton of good information. As a boater I will say this...the co-angler has a good amount of money and resources tied up in fishing that tournament as well. A reaction like he had to that co catching that fish was uncalled for and incredibly unprofessional. That co angler should have embarrassed him and ridiculed him on camera for that. You do a fantastic job of communicating and your pros were likely counting their lucky stars for it. Honestly you are likely being far too kind. If I sit down to re-tie, whatever cover I was fishing is fair game. Telling a co to not fish forward of the windshield is a joke...especially if paralleling a bank. At the end of the day communication is key, but many boaters need to get over themselves and realize we are all in this to have some fun and with any luck make a little money too.

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man it is sad a lot of people just don't see it that way. BFLs and COSTAS are way different. Not saying I won't help my CO I most definitely will. and I will respect the money he put up and stands to lose. I've also seen Cos fly in the night before and want to know everything for the next day after a Pro/boater has practiced all week or more!!! I just want there to be more mutual respect.

    • @StrikeCityDMV
      @StrikeCityDMV 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors a lof of people fish these things for the first or second time around and have not formed enough relationships to get the opportunities to practice. So it would not make since to fly in 3 to 4 days prior just to sit on the bank for a Costa event the stakes and money is too much to burn all that extra money if you know you dont know anyone that you can get on the water with to practice, but to your point that is still no excuse for not knowing what to throw and expecting your boater to give you all the answers to the test. It's your opportunity to know what's up. I think turning the boat or positioning it so that your Co is boxed out is just as wrong as casting over the boaters head. There is a lot of grey area in what is considered the front often time and if the two don't communicate it could be a long day.

Also if I’m sacking them up front and my buddy in the back is catching nothing, I’ll let them take the trolling motor. On a piece of cover with a bunch of targets to hit like that, (with some exceptions, e.g. if a fish is on a bed or you're on a lake where the potential to have multiple fish on one piece of cover isn't high) you're generally not going to want to hit the juice on the first cast. You want to pick off the outside stuff first. Those are bonus bites if you get them. If you yank one out of the heart of it first cast, all you do is disrupt the entire piece of cover and really screw your chances of picking up bonus fish here and there. There are a number of things that separate pros from even great local guys -- this is one of them.
      Thanks for your opinion though.

    I’m sorry but I disagree with most of this video and in whole on how co anglers are treated on a regular basis. I’m been a conangler and a boater and first and foremost I’ve never charged a co angler a rider fee. To many times are co anglers treated poorly, as long as my conangler isn’t buzzing my head on a cast I don’t care. If I’m paying 475 an event plus travel expenses I’ll be damned if a boater is going to back seat me or disrespect me. I get it, it’s your boat and you paid more but that doesn’t mean the co angler shouldnt be able to compete.

    I’ve had boaters get mad because I’ve caught fish behind them. Boaters are gonna wine no matter what and 90% of the time they’re fishing to fast any way. So I decided along time ago if it’s not a written rule I’m gonna do what I want. I do have a boat as well but don’t always go as a boater. Sometimes the boater is just a winy ass with an ego problem that thinks he should catch all the fish and if your not throwing the right bait in the right way your not going to catch the fish the biggest example is people always throwing crankbaits, I hate crankbaits unless I’m fishing ledges or they’re eating them consistently.(which almost never happens where I’m at)

His reply after about 10min of fishing with the rig I set up for him was, “man, I just can’t fish like this.” Because I was fishing extremely slow. 5 min after he laid down the rig I gave him I caught my third. 🤷‍♂️ I was humble even after he made me late but it was like damn dude your a POS.

    That boater has already fished past that fish. Looking at that particular situation it looks like the boater has already moved past that fish since he is casting off to the right side now. So why is he mad at the Co for catching a fish on the left side of the boat? Sure the Co is casting to the front of the boat but he is not casting to unfished water. He is still fishing "behind" the boater in water the boater has already hit.

      I feel like I see refs on boats, but why even bother being a sco angler when 90 percent of the time the front of the boat gets firsts dibs on fish and the power to go where he wants? I want to look a stat up and see how many times a co angler has won a tourney bet under 5 percent

I was upset, so upset that when I have someone on the back of the boat I am cognizant of them being there and treat them as well as I was always treated by the awesome men that I had learned from. What this man did at the beginning of the video is just typical "I am a pro" big head, he believed that all fish worth having belonged to him. Like when Scott Martin thought that locals should get out of his way when he was fishing a tournament because he was a pro.

    GREAT VID!!
    THE FOLLOWING IS SIMPLY ONE PERSON’S PERSPECTIVE. ALL OTHER PERSPECTIVES ARE APPRECIATED AND RESPECTED,SINCE WE’RE ALL DIFFERENT (that’s what make life awesome!!)
    Hey ya’all 👋!! I just watched this video and read EVERY COMMENT AND EVERY REPLY. I haven’t fished a tournament in over 20 yrs, yet will be starting from scratch next year. I don’t own a boat, I have limited equipment, and my time on the water has been virtually ZERO. So what, right? So this: money makes people do weird stuff. It actually makes people MORE of who they really are. If your a grounded, respectful, GRATEFUL person without $$, you will (generally!!) be MORE SO with $$. We all have a choice. IF YOU CHOOSE to fish solo, you have 💯 % control of your tournaments. IF YOU ARE THE BOATER AND CHOOSE TO FISH CO-ANGLER TOURNAMENTS, imo there must be some give. The boater CANNOT fish the whole boat every minute of the day, so the co has to have SOMEPLACE to fish from, right? Don’t get me wrong.... the boater CAN fish WHEREVER they want from THEIR BOAT.....it’s their boat!! Yet, if they’re fishing from a place of respect, they should understand that they physically CANNOT be EVERYWHERE in the boat during the day. Now..... the boater (BEING THE BOATER!!) must require respect from the co as well. The co physically cannot fish the whole boat either (right?). Therefore, BOTH ANGLERS should fish with the understanding that:
    1) The boater and the co have invested time and money to be together; quantifying either simply creates a disparity, and leads to an improper judgement. Time and money VALUE is determined by the person EXPENDING them. Who spent more or less is irrelevant. Do you VALUE the person and what they’ve done to be with you?!!?
    2) If it’s not YOUR BOAT, you’re fishing on private property, you should leave it better than you found it, you should ask permission for anything that may seem questionable to you, you should offer to give the boater compensation for use of their property.
    3) IF IT IS YOUR BOAT, the co is YOUR GUEST, and hopefully your student. You have every right to the ideas in #2 above. AND IF THE CO DOES NOT FIT #2, they are bing a poor guest, and IMO, IGNORANT , and it is your professional duty to swiftly and respectfully INFORM them of the situation. If the response is anything LESS THAN #2 above, you can choose to have a rough day with them, constantly disrespecting you, or quit the day.
    Either option sucks!!!!!
    In the end, we’re all out to win and have fun doing it. If you can’t show respect for another human, maybe you should be in the NFL(lol.... a little tongue in cheek humor, but timely!!)
    I hope that when the time comes next year, that IF I’m fishing as a co (which I’m sure I will), my boater will show equal respect to me as I to them.
    TIGHT LINES, YA’all!! I wish nothing but the best for you in your tournament pursuits!!!!! Peace ✌️

    Here is my take on this.....MESS. Me and my fishing partner always know that we just don't ever cross lines. The co angler casts the opposite side of the boat, after the front man casts. You go right, I go left, and vice versa. It is basically called RESPECT. Hampering the co angler to not cross the console is, in my mind, ridiculous. I do not agree with Troy on this and I think it was totally unsportsmanlike. If I throw in a hole, and then you throw in the same hole right behind me, then we may have a problem. Never, EVER position the boat to hamper your partner, and this is what Troy did.

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sure wish they wouldn't position the boat like that but I understand they put money into this. I think troy's response was really triggered by the coanglers action. He has been pro long enough that he isn't getting upset over a coangler just catching a fish.

    Oh my..... I have just lost so much respect for the fishing community of which I’ve been a “member” all my life. “Off limits”.... I understand courtesy and just being an all-around amazing, kind, and super awesome fisherman, but putting “limits” on what somebody can or cannot fish.... especially when it all boils down to the fact that this is 100% in laymen’s terms - Fishing. Regardless of the semantics behind messily money being involved. Most definitely makes this whole thing petty and absolutely ludicrous... can’t believe someone would be so greedy when it comes to Fishing. I guess I just can’t understand it because Fishing to me is so much more than just me catching a fish. But I guess it’s whatever

    • @swaymedz
      @swaymedz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Beyond The Bounds really I’m just curious in all honesty. As a “co-angler”, meaning you’re working as a team, why would anyone get upset at their partner casting where he or she sees a serious opportunity to catch a fish to help out the team (the both of them)? If each angler is truly fishing as a “team” then in no form or fashion should ANYONE think that the other angler is doing anything BUT the best for their team. Every anglers knowledge when it comes to fishing and or seeing the water as a fish does is completely different. That being said if my “co-angler“ casts where he believes to be the statistically likely (from his knowledge) being that our team interests are being held higher than our individual interests, there would be no logical reason to either get upset and or set restrictions upon cast areas. I mean I really just feel like this to me indicates that these professional bass fisherman are not actually “team mates“ but are really just out for individual glory and their own enjoyment of fishing. But if that’s the case, they need to stick to solo fishing LOL... just my opinion. By the way I absolutely love your videos, I watch all of them. I just can’t really understand why teammates would restrict their other teammate. Unless for some weird reason they’re both on the same boat fishing against each other LOL.

    As a tournament angler I get his frustration but 1) did he lay the ground rules down prior to launch and 2) did he really have to throw the net down with the fish in it? That was a d*** move and could have killed the fish which would have been even worse for the co-angler. Communication is key. No need to act like that. Be a man, don't be a d***
