    Good series Todd. You struck a nerve with the c-rig, all I could do was think about how bad I sucked this year in the BFL's and go, why, why, why!! Of course I had a boater tell me we were going shallow on Friday, Saturday we take off, he wants to go throw a c-rig first!! All good, threw a big shakey head. I'm still debating on going back to boater next year, for me it is as much about my health, bad back these days so running my boat I can control the beating. I will re-watch these again! Thanks.

    My favorite comment I ever heard from a pro, “Man you’re catching them where I’m not throwing.” There were 35,000 thousand reasons why, that was the right choice that day on that lake. One tip I would give new co-anglers, have multiple Carolina rig leaders tied in case of a break off or line abrasion. The more time your bait is in the water, greater the odds of loading the live well. Catch’em!

    I hear you on throwing Carolina rig but me personally I would be focused on top water and pwr fishing.. that why I be in my own zone & the pro certainly has one less thing he has to worry or think about. Hello we never know if he has had rough night at home & that plus worried about winning a tournament is alot pressure and truth is many people don't handle pressure well even though they may have the best poker face..

    Todd thanks for these informational video's. I have been a co angler before and experienced some of these things and I have also had times when my boater has said we are going to fish for you because I'm not going to make the cut . When I was co-angling i always try to travel light and no more than 5 rods be cause you can do multiple applications with most rods if you stay around the 7' medium set up.

    Great video Todd, thanks for this series. You've mentioned before that you fish really fast with your t/m on high. Question, when your co-angler catches a good one, do you slow down for them to land the fish? What about when your co gets hung up?

  • @theamateurangler6273
    @theamateurangler6273 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a set list of things I do as a co-angler in the BFL'S. When I get my confirmed boaters name, I first go check his bio/profile. If he has fished 47 events and has a whopping career earning of $367.....I typically pack as many baits as I can possibly pack into my ONE and only tackle bag. If he has a decent record of being in the money, I go off of what he tells me and usually pack light. I bring the typical seasonal consistent baits but not as many. I never take more than 3 rods. I do bring 2 spare reels but no more than 3 rods. Space is limited as is. A cranking set-up, a jig/worm set up and then a spinning rod that covers many options. Sometimes packing less saves you from fishing nonsense, out of confusion.

      Yea I rarely talk it out first, I usually just net all of there’s and they net mine if I ask, most net them without me asking. After the first net job I make my determination after that. I will say I’ve heard tons of horror stories but I really don’t have anything that’s outrageous. I do believe that it’s a big deal and I’d say I’ve only had a few net like my fishing partners do. But we go after it!!!!!!

    If you go into any event as a coangler on planet earth without a carolina rig, vibrating jig, and a drop shot you’re costing yourself money and points, The best advice you’ll ever hear as a coangler is; anytime it’s possible fish a different column of water than the boater. If he’s throwing a moving topwater , throw a spinnerbait/ vibrating jig. If he’s dragging a worm over grass, throw a lipless crankbait or jerkbait. When you find yourself in a situation where you have to fish the same way, such as flipping bushes, use a heavier or lighter weight. I always started heavier simply because I could make more presentations in a day. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT and you’ll catch them.

      Here’s the deal for me that wouldn’t even be close to a concern for me. Easy going co anglers that don’t hinder me are what I want. I just realized that what I want is a guy I really don’t know is back there, but not in a bad way. I move a lot and move fast if you are always ready to move spots and never slow me down your good with me. I wouldn’t worry about it all.

Advice is to go to a store and try on as many pairs as possible to find the ones that fit perfect. Then ask around about lenses. I only use sunrise silver for fishing but it might not be for everyone, just personal preference

    Great info Todd had some of those exact scenarios go down this weekend in a tournament on Clear lake in Cali. My pro was on a crank bait bite and had to position his boat and cast in a way that prevented me from fishing the bank but he told me before we even got to the spot what he was going to do and where he thought I could fish that spot. What do you know He ended up winning the event and I got a check. One question though... No shakeyhead?

    I would add one in with the ned/drop shot spinning rod category. A 3 inch swimbait on a 1/4oz head will get bit anywhere and can go from shallow to deep. Works well out of the back.

    I don’t fish a C-rig much so I’m not comfortable with it. I’ve been with boaters that fish fast so it seemed to me that technique would not work. Is it possible to fish it when the boater is running and gunning?

  • @jefferyroblow3453
    @jefferyroblow3453 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Todd, great info as always, but one question I have, relates to line type and size. Is there a type and size you would recommend for a back deck guy? For instance, 40 lb braid across the board or couple heavy braid, couple 20 lb fluro, and a lightweight spinning setup.

  • @rustandodson1146
    @rustandodson1146 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great stuff again, there’s a lot of that technique in some of those baits you mentioned that I need to learn and slow down whether it’s as a boater or co angler I just have hell slowing down it feels so unnatural to me but I think there’s days that they won’t eat anything no matter where you throw it or how you fish it and that’s not the anglers fault it’s just how it goes sometimes. I just fished back to back local derby’s over the last 2 weekends one on Alan Henry and one on Champion Creek Reservoir both these lakes I know really well, I found schools of fish on both using live scope and only filled a limit in one derby and still came up short of placing and one I didn’t even catch a keeper but learned a lot on both body’s of water. On one of these derbies out of 28 anglers only 40 fish where weighed in and no one, absolutely no one caught a limit, it was rough🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    Todd, sometimes co-anglers choose to be in the back of the boat even though they own a bass boat, have multiple tournament trophies and are possibly a better angler than the boater. When we put our time and effort in and get the bad draw that intentionally do their best to shut you off, it sure leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Been on both sides of that coin.

    I take 6 rods, three casting and three spinning rods. Usually my casting rods have two for flipping and pitching usually my go to is a texas rigged tube and weighted texas rigged stick bait. The other casting rod has a spinner bait or swim jig. I have one spinning rod with a small top water or small crank bait, the other is wacky stick bait or neko rig, and my last is a split shot rig basically a finesse Carolina rig. Also I’ll never cast past the center console. Once that center console passes the target in my opinion it’s fair game as long as the boater doesn’t say otherwise. Only time I won’t throw if the center console pass the lay down or whatever the target is. Is if I noticed the boater miss one or something of that nature. I won’t throw at any target right after the boater sets the hook and misses one. I’ve heard of cos doing this and in my opinion that’s a big no no

  • @DAVE_WHITE
    @DAVE_WHITE 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have been on both sides of this, I always kept it fair, if the boater back boated me? I would just sling a big spinnerbait past his ear a few times, they get the hint.. both parties in the boat have equal water to fish.

    • @toddcastledinefishing5924
      @toddcastledinefishing5924  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm so if you think you have a spot you think you should throw at and you don’t get to because your boater is throwing at it , throwing a spinner bait by his ear is ok.

    The co-anger should be practicing with the angler in my opinion if they possibly can or at least do their research on the lake they are going to fish. They also should be talking to the angler to see what their fishing pace is. Whether they fish the banks fast, slow, or at a medium pace. What type of areas they will be fishing so they can be better prepared if that is possible
