These principals are more important now than ever. We can’t control the external world, but is everyone tapped into their Stillness, the situation would be much easier
Ryan's point about the donkey is exactly why I love going out and nature, and almost need to at least twice a week. Every non-human being in this world just exists. It doesn't really think, it just goes on instinct. If humans were to do that, our lives would be so much simpler.
Yes Ryan yes! I have been following and watching you and get soooo much out of it. You have helped to direct my focus and attention. But THIS is exceptional! So a mighty thanks for all your work and all your sharing! 💖
I find it funny how he says he won’t bring up meditation because nobody’s going to do it but then the first two things he suggests is to “get up early” and “get off your phone” which 90% of people are unwilling to do and seems way harder to implement than to just do nothing for 10 minutes a day. Otherwise though, great speech and advice!
Just ditch the smartphone and see how much life changes. Feature phones with internet browsing and MMS are plenty. But to really enjoy the benefits of solitude, get the most basic feature phone with only calls and texts. Life is much simpler.
16:30 "The news is not there to inform you. The news is there to make you watch more news." ~Ryan Holiday Hah, especially now. Marketing, money, business comes first 😪
I’d like to hear how he has such control over his morning with two children in the house. He must have a very loving and patient wife who takes on that morning task.
How do you rationalize a development of compassion and present awareness knowing the consciousness of sentient beings with hunting and even fishing? I ask this for my understanding of the question. Does the water separate us from the awareness of the consciousness of the fish? How do we ignore or become numb to the awareness of he prey? There must be something in mind that allows this but realizing we are not this mind can we be the body that performs the thought that takes a life as though we are not that life?
The inflection point was that I relized I had enough stolen watered down bullshit in my head and that no one would mind when I passed it on them in a piss poor excuse for a book.

Love his books. Unfortunately, Ryan’s ability to talk about stillness without seemingly being able to remain still himself, and present, instead - a bundle of nerves and pacing around.. loses his message. Eckhart Tolle - that’s the man you want to be listening to talking about stillness. His google talk is phenomenal.
you are no different then CNN why do you have to interject your politics? do you have to kowtow to the powers that be?(youtube)? I realize your trying to make a living.stick to the format. practice what you preach.
Ryan does good work but he's not so still and stoic anytime the name "Trump" is mentioned. Ryan needs help in this matter. I've seen him on podcasts absolutely change within seconds and start cursing and losing it...all of his stoic philosophy goes right out of the window. Ryan, just breathe and realize that half of America disagrees with you. We all want the best for America, but just disagree on the path. This year or in 4 years, the administration will change and life goes on. I didn't vote for President Obama but I didn't go into a cursing fit whenever his name was mentioned. I actually prayed for the man and hoped that he would be a good leader.
Ever considered that the Stoic philosophy is not made for people who are naturally calm and controlled, but rather to be a means to the end of controlling your own impulsiveness, temperament etc.? Some historians (e. g. Pierre Vespirini) write about Aurelius that he actually had a hot temper and stoicism was just a counterweight to it. Think about that.
What did he do except writing books? Seriously, the guy has zero real life experience with real results except repeating other people's stories and selling them as books. No reason to pay attention.
For real? The guy was director of marketing at American apparel in his early 20s until they closed. And for years he mastered using the media against themselves for marketing purposes. He still does it for huge companies. He wrote a whole book about it ironically lmao

Fucking pathetic when an adult needs to look up to someone for these answers.

Admire Ryan Holiday's work. Obstacle is The Way, fabulous book. You should get it.
For me Daily Stoic is his best work still. Obstacle is a good gateway drug into Stoicism.
Buddy the donkey part was the best! He lit up and was so authentic when he was explaining his pet donkey

Excellent talk. Due to my schedule, waking up early is nearly impossible- who can relate?

Great talk!
this is a great discussion about stoicism and about life in general.
Stillness... is listening to your spouse's complaints with a happy face 🤪🤐
Not happy face necessarily.. just indifferent

He said he wakes up early to get time alone
Great meditation for the day=]
Brilliant!
Love this ryan

I read that at "Silliness is the key" and I legit thought we were going to be instructed in clown Buddhism or something.
Thanks for this! When will you upload the podcast version?
self control is the key
Good talk

Essentially it charges you money for using your phone during certain times
