I needed to hear this tonight. I’m a teacher and dreading going into my classroom tomorrow because this week has been hard. But I’m going to show up and do my job. And do it well. Thank you Ryan!
Honeslty more than a doctor a teacher deserves at most respect. I am forever grateful for my teachers. Anyway God bless their soul may he continue to guide them raising new generation.
You don't have to do it well. You just have to try to do it well. There's a big difference there. I teach freshman comp and some classes are decidedly not well done. . . so what? It's just another drop in the bucket that no one remembers for long.
From a fellow teacher in Brazil, I understand you and feel you. Remember you’re not alone. We all stand with you. Let’s get things done. Our profession is based on hope - hope we are doing right, home the kids will learn, hope they will change the world we live in. Keep hoping!
Thanks Ryan! I love to hear this “Do your job; Trust the process and keep showing up”. As nurse who deals with difficult people all the time, reminds me to be better and do my job as a good person.
As a Marine Corps Veteran, I wish I could have viewed the world like this as a young man. I think about my time in the miliary nearly every day. The Marine Corps gave me something invaluable. And yet, I could have gotten so much more, had I been able to use a mind with this depth of understanding. Today, as i randomly watch this video, I am engulfed with gratitude for having been able to be part of something as incredible as life itself and for the things I have experienced. I hope that I too can have the courage to become remotely close to being a person like mahatma, king or any other person who selflessly, and non violently presented their lives in such a way; that their behavior spoke for itself. I cannot put into words, the kind of things I think because of my service in the Marines, only other marines can describe this. I am sure many of us, can only imagine what it must be like to be a war leader. Someone whos' job is to maintain a position of world strength. A position that makes them one of the most hunted men in the world. What goes on in their minds, in the dark of the night...... is something only they know. Courage, is an understatement.
This seems like one huge contradiction. Unless I stepped into one of those rick and morty alternate universe portal worlds I dont recall MLK or Gandhi having been war leaders. I dont know if the part about living nonviolently necessarily squares up completely with that other part about being one of the most hunted men in the world
@@largequestionmark Good response. The Marine Corps is a peaceful organization. MLK and Ghandi could practice non-violence because they were dealing with the bad behavior on the part of the U.S. and Britain, who were otherwise freedom loving, justice loving people. But non-violence would have been a disaster dealing with southern slave owners or Hitler.
Thank you Ryan Holiday this is my understand of your lecture: "We owe it to ourselves to uphold the loftiest of standards while nurturing our innate need for compassion. It is paramount to preserve our individuality and the clarity of our conscience while extending the hand of forgiveness to those who may not measure up to the exacting criteria we set for ourselves. True strength emerges when we confront adversity with unwavering honesty. We stand firmly upon the foundation of knowledge. This legacy offers us not only wisdom but also the ethical compass needed to guide our choices toward a more fulfilling life. Our disposition mirrors the wealth of knowledge we've gathered over time. It is incumbent upon us to channel this inherent quality towards a profound purpose in society, a moral obligation that compels us to dedicate ourselves to the greater good."
I have watched 1000's of videos and I am a big fan of Robert Green, whom I believe is your mentor. I never thought I would be introduced to a speaker who surpasses Robert. You my friend is the real deal. This is the best inspirational video I have ever watched and will be buying your book very soon. You are destined to achieve even greater things.
I’m 26 and a construction contractor, I had a very prestigious mini project which was supposed to be completed in twelve days. Today is the 16th day and whatever could go wrong, happened. Now all these 16 days me and my team have worked 15-16 hours every single day and now I’m on the verge of breaking down. But I’m taking it one day at a time simplifying simple tasks so that it doesn’t seem a big mountain. I have lost my sleep.
What construction job isn't delayed? Like seriously, there are so many moving parts and things not completely in your control. Its just a thing everyone knows and accepts.
Stay strong, brother! I pray that the hand of God moves over your situation and brings about surprisingly good solutions, amen! I pray this in Jesus mighty name! 🙏❤️👊
Hopefully you've already finished, but typically the psychology that drives me home to the finish in these situations is, "I've come this far, & invested so much, & I'll be damned if I don't see it through". Anyway, I hope you completed what you set out to do & have tasted the sweet taste of accomplishing your mission regardless of any unforseen adversity. For me, it makes it SOOOOOO much SWEETER!
This was an irrefutably the most intentional and purpose filled speeches I’ve heard and the timing (for my personal timeline) is eerily meaningful. However, something tells me the timing thing can pertain to just about any time. I’m just grateful it has found me today, October 2nd 2023
It’s made clear Any Leader who puts “self” above others is an ego driven narcissist dangerous person. The ego is no amigo to self or others . Great presentation
I work in mission-critical roles, where lives are on the line. Stoicism has grounded and focused me at times when I might otherwise have folded, and been the cause of losing some of those souls. The Daily Stoic brings quickly digestible, easily understandable lessons to the mind's forefront, and fosters feelings of confidence, lucidity, and empowerment unequaled by anything I've yet experienced.
I so needed to hear this. It is spoke of everything. I have been thinking and feeling, and haven't been able to put it together. Thank you so much, so so much, for bringing the pieces of the puzzle together to form the whole picture, for me. totally gonna look into the rest of this guys stuff. and you know what, thank you for not doctoring it up, I didn't really need to have a college education, to understand how to have grace in the face of adversity. You talk to me like you're just somebody I'm standing at the bus stop with. And I appreciate that. good luck with your journey, and being a better you. I'm hoping what you have said, will help me be a better me. I'm creating a playlist, that says, this day, I will be a better me. And I'm going to listen to this on my commute, every day. For 2 1/2 hours, to make it 42 miles, as a blind man. And that last two words, should say it all. totally cited for my whole life, 35 years, and the last 14 of it, I've been blind. I'm 49 now. And struggle with a lot of things in the world. People and their ignorance. Municipalities and whatever's. It's just hard. And I'm gonna have to obviously stop and listen to this again because, it sounds like I'm regressing. Lol. Thanks again.
Dang the marines always get the best hook ups! Funny those young pups may not see the gravity of these messages until they are ready, but as a vet that started my adult life there in 29 palms in Comm school 18yrs ago, i thank you for passing this knowledge out there to these guys and here on TH-cam. Great presentation! 😈🐕
24:00 "Little black book" - this is correct; it's not always little, black or a book but your career depends who is on top (or will be) and it's not always the "best" people. Manipulate the persons you want in best; follow orders, don't be critical, work overtime, etc.
Mr. Holiday does a decent job simplifying deep material. It is interesting how he defines ARETE as EXCELLENCE. Professor Susan Meyer, Ph.D., translates ARETE as "the goodness of anything." This is a much wider scope, than what we think of when we say/read virtue (in English). Mr. Holiday's books are enjoyable reads. My two favorites are: EGO IS THE ENEMY and STILLNESS IS THE KEY (I'm still torn between the two;). Thank you for your time.
Brilliant! I've only just begun learning about stoic philosophy, but it strikes me that it can be distilled down to being a good person and doing the right thing. This was a very interesting presentation 👌
I have an English speaking skill test coming up and I am not at all confident about my speaking especially in English because it's not my first language and I don't use it frequently for verbal communication. An amazing lecture and stories. This weekend I volunteered for a hard job at work didn’t complain a bit. Mission was successful because I did what I was supposed to do, work. Worked as a team at it too 😊
Really enjoyed this presentation. I've allowed myself to be overwhelmed by work recently and this has given me some timely perspective as I catch up on work before goign on holiday for two weeks.
It was one of the most amazing talks I ever heard. Thank you, Ryan. I hope my book, which I sent to your bookstore, will reach your hands. Thanks again for all the fantastic work you do.
Great talk, and so great that you share these... fascinating to say the least, and one of the big takeaways is this idea of creating a series of RULES and Guiding Principles that keep you rooted during the good times and the bad. So essential in this busy and chaotic world when tough periods are sure to hit. Need to work on some rules like these, that is for sure.
A more modern stoic is Viktor Frankel. A holocaust survivor and author. Man’s Search for Meaning is a deep read but the overall message is we all have a choice in how we respond to events that happen in life…Thank you Ryan for your presentation and sharing your personal experiences

I'm all about Ryan Holiday's stoicism and I absolutely need to and will strive to adopt more of it in my life. What I'm not about is polarizing even this talk to US Marines by, once again, impugning Donald Trump - who Holiday hates and calls a "deranged tyrant" - and not even doing so directly, but passive aggressively. If this clown thinks there aren't Marines in that auditorium who would gladly take a bullet for Trump, he's wrong. But Holiday knows this and does it anyway. "Your flawed idol fails you." Based on this alone, I distrust Holiday.
