You might really enjoy Hoist the Colors from Pirates of the Caribbean - it's not a traditional scary/halloween song, but the characters of a couple of the guys are legitimately disturbing. And both the theater and the music are fabulous. The other non-Halloween performance that comes to mind is their latest Golden Hour. I was surprised that a few reactors found it really creepy - because it's set in a toy shop, dolls, etc. Dolls don't do that to me (or detached heads, like VP has in the performance) but... hey. It's fun, they create an interesting story to go with the song, and the harmonies are stunning.

Yes VoicePlay are the theater group of Acappella. They love to get into character and have fun with the songs. I’m definitely a great fan of that it just give the song that feeling of be more. The visuals are amazing and it rounds out the whole experience at least for me. Great reaction! 😊

One of their videos that I believe you would really enjoy, in terms of theatricality and humour and "play-like" performance (besides being something vocally astounding) is "In the hall of the Mountain King", the orchestral, instrumental piece from Grieg's "Peer Gynt". It was one of their two Halloween releases last year... Super funny and incredibly intricate and theatrical. 🙂
And you could as well enjoy their very last release, "Golden Hour", or "Nothing else matters" (yes, the Metallica's song).
You could as well like "My mother told me", "Hoist the colours", "The Dragonborn comes" and the "Halo theme". I'm looking forward for your next reactions to them and Geoff, if you decide to dig into his own channel's rabbit hole. 🙂
    See you next time! 🙂

This song was my gateway drug to Voiceplay LOL. My nephew started telling me about his Jack Skellington tattoo, and it made me want to hear this song so when i searched youtube...this version came up and i was like "Eh ok..lets check it out". That was a couple of years ago and i was hooked. I listened to their entire channel that day and have been up for every new release.

My personal favorite of all their songs is My Mother Told Me. It narrowly beats out Oogie Boogie which comes in second. Might also check out Nothing Else Matters. It's not as theatrical but it is really good. OK Editing.... Back from listening to Nothing Else Matters over and over and over again. I think it has edged out the other 2 for first place. I love the complexity... and the sound, of course... beautiful.

VoicePlay has done four videos from Nightmare Before Christmas. While they do some videos for Christmas, their favorite holiday seems to be Halloween. This year they did Hall of the Mountain King and Ding Dong.
Seeing the items behind you, I will also make another suggestion for your reactions. Layne Stein (VoicePlay’s beatboxer) and Tony Wakim (VoicePlay’s former tenor) own Pattycake Productions. In addition to running a commercial studio (where VoicePlay often records) they also produce videos. They aren’t as prolific as VoicePlay because they concentrate on bigger productions. One they did during Covid (and set during Covid) was Bump in the Night. It features an original’Thriller-type song, and many of your horror movie favorites.

Sandy Claws is Geoffs' brother-in-law. They earned my #TheatreKidsOfACappela. When I found them three years ago. I found Geoff Castellucci first with his cover of Sixteen Tons which lead me to the group he is a founding member of and their bass VoicePlay. I Fell head-first down the rabbit hole for both.

There's a saying among fans of both Pentatonix and VoicePlay: PTX owns Christmas; VoicePlay owns Halloween. While Pentatonix goes on tour for Christmas and puts out a new Christmas album nearly every year, VoicePlay puts out about a video a month, and several around Halloween are always holiday-oriented.
That said, PTX does have a video where they use a little more of their musical theater talents than usual, and it's for Halloween. Another song from Nightmare Before Christmas, Making Christmas, where they also do some dress-up and makeup to match the occasion. It's pretty short, but it's certainly worth a look if you're a NBC fan.

This is my favorit VP song, and yes, Geoff can go really Deep.
Geoff Castaluci/ Voice Play, has a broad bass.
Avi Kaplan/ Pentatonix, has a smooth velvet bass.
Tim Foust/ Home Free, has a growl bass.
And talking about HF, they have just released a new song/ video, "Mississippi squirrel Revival".

VoicePlay character voices are legendary, lol. They even sound really good doing them live.
I don't know if Nightmare Before Christmas is a stage musical anywhere but it absolutely should be!

I love this! It was one of the first songs I heard/saw, and I went directly down the rabbit hole. I've been a Home Free fan for years (since seeing them win the Sing-Off), but VP has risen to be my favorite with HF a close second.

This lineup is older, two of those members left. Earl, the bearded tenor left early in 2020 for undisclosed personal reasons. He had been with them from the beginning (1997). J None, the baritone in the leather jacket left in 2021, he was recruited by the US Navy as a singer and has a 5 year hitch. He's been back twice, at Halloween of course, to collaborate with them.
Hoist the Colours, as mentioned by others is absolutely wonderful. It includes Cesar de la Rosa who joined them a few months after J None left.
Anticipating more from Voiceplay and Geoff!

Voiceplay is definitely more theatrical than other a cappella groups I’ve seen. Have you seen the Zombies (Voiceplay) vs Hillbillies (HomeFree)? Fun!

There are so many Voice Play videos you could go with - Hoist the Colours and Nothing Else Matters are both absolutely amazing. A pretty cool and creepy Halloween-themed song they did was Hide and Seek ft. Lauren Paley (aka the Stairwell Siren of TikTok). Another a cappella group called the Bass Gang did their own version of Hide and Seek also ft. Lauren Paley. Both are fantastic.

I also think you'd like Hoist the Colours, it's kind of a spooky/haunting type feel. Plus, it's pirates 😂🏴‍☠️

VoicePlay must be the most versatile of a capella groups, covering songs in many genres and each one given the unique VoicePlay touch, being musically briliant and often theatrical too. Their latest is more a sweet love story, whilst the previous one was Metallica cover. They really can and do go in any direction. I have no doubt you will be tempted into watching Geoff's low bass covers, which aren't a capella but show off his range of talents. Among their more theatrical videos would be The Dragonborn Comes, from Skyrim, or Queen in Five Minutes and the latest, Golden Hour in which Geoff's wife Kathy appears. As to doing a whole movie, I don't see it happening. Considering they do all the work themselves they do well to release a new video every month. Their medley from Wicked took Geoff a very long time to arrange, something like two years I believe. It was his magnum opus I think, so far.

That's why I always thought VoicePlay is such an appropriate name for them, you can think of them as using their Voices to put on a Play, Playing with their Voices by using 'character' or even 'cartoonish' sounds to do the singing in and also Play simply as being a vocal group that is looking to have fun and also 'playing' with your expectations. (By the way, Sandy Claus was portrayed by Geoff's brother-in-law, but his voice was actually dubbed in by the VP (bald) tenor Eli-he has done voice work on the side as well as taking on the job of doing the lighting for the VP videos. Since you've watched these videos, might as well take in the whole VP "Nightmare Before Christmas" oeuvre by reacting to their "Kidnap the Sandy Claus" and "What's This?" That last one definitely shows that it's taken them awhile to fully embrace doing a full theatrical version of a song, but it's still inventive and lots of fun (and, of course, sung superbly). Layne is such a great beatboxer, and with Geoff throwing in what sounds like an actual bass line, it really adds to your ears just assuming you're hearing an actual instrument percussion track. Plus, Layne especially writes such interesting percussion and syncopated singing that also helps to form such a strong foundation on which to build the lead vocals.

Found you through VoicePlay 💛 great reaction. New sub from me. I’d highly recommend Hoist The Colors. If you’re into video games I’d recommend their Halo theme, and Dragon Born Come. They also did Kidnap Mr. SandyClaws. One of my absolute FAVORITES is Dream On, you won’t be disappointed, its amazing 💛

If you like Nightmare Before Christmas - take a gander at Pentatonix version of 'Making Christmas', and 'My Favorite Things' (this one is from Sound of Music, but they've spun it a bit with a Halloween kind of feeling)

While they are the theater kids, not all of their videos are like this. They have plenty of calmer videos where it’s just them standing or sitting in one place. They are really good at filming for the mood and theme of the music.

I'm not a fan of a capella groups, per se, but I do love VoicePlay. Not only are they crazy talented, but the theatrical nature of their music videos is super cool. I think this video might have been the first one of theirs that I saw, and it might still be my favorite. (I too love The Nightmare Before Christmas.)
The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, in addition to being ridiculously talented as a vocalist, is also known for his very fun and creative videos, for his own personal covers. I would encourage you to check out his channel.

Yes, that was Layne Stein (looking like Zero) creating all the vocal percussion. Geoff Castellucci is the amazing bass, emulating original artist Ken Page's style of singing. He has his own channel and you should at least check out his stunning Hallowe'en covers of The Headless Horseman (emulating artist Thurl Ravenscroft's style), The Monster Mash, and Ghost Riders in the Sky

A favorite analogy of the three big acapella groups is that if they were in high school, PTX would be the class council, HF is the guys you want to hang out with and VP is the theatre department. For me VP is a hit and miss with their arrangements but Oogie Boogie and Hoist the Colors and the best IMO.
