    Hans Meier discusses various ways of producing a basket using the scroll saw. He goes over 5 different methods (with a bonus!): step, twist, stack, folding and weave. Worth watching for the tips alone.

    I've been a 'part time' scroller for 26 years now. Started on a 16" craftsman 'shaker' saw and todat I am still using the 22 year old RBI SUPER HAWK 21" that I purchased new. Came accross some bowl and basket patterns long ago, can't begin to guess at how many I sold at craft shows, seems like everyone likes baskets, LOL. Thank you for putting on such a good production, I still like to pick up on new ideas.........

    What a fantastic presentation. I do not do much scrolling myself, but I am going to make the time to try and build some baskets. I have my young daughter started on the scroll saw and it won't be long before she is skilled enough to try these. A big "Thank you" to the GWA for sharing this with everyone.

    Best Gwinnett video I have seen! I usually skip through them, as I think I would have been asleep if I were there. Sorry guys! But true. Keeps it hopping, and we don't see a lot of mondaine actions.

    Fantastic job on this video. I had never considered making baskets before but now, I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for your efforts.

    I have made several "stack and twist" bowls. I use a syringe ( large ones can be found at tack shops) with the point ground flat (no danger of injury ). for glue application (just little dots). These are great for growing orchids ( use "shade cloth" inside and fill with coarse "orchid soil" ). They drain well ( I water once a week ) because of the openings in every layer. Orchids live in rain the upper parts of rain forest so, they like showers and then dry periods. Not an expert but have had requests for more from buyers.

    I have made quite a few collapsible baskets and One technique that I use is I will glue different types of wood together like you would for a cutting board for the different colors and lay out my patter for the basket and cut the pattern , this makes for an interesting basket of colors and then I will dip it into Watco Danish clear oil and this protects the basket. I use red oak, yellow heart, walnut, and purple heart and also hard maple. I use a Deep plastic tub and after the dip I then use a funnel and pour the oil back into the Container to use for another time.

    if anyone is looking for a simple clamping for the last project, what I did was use two 1/16" wooden dowels (straws work just as well) stack everything but the base hanging on a dowel.(sideways) place the second dowel over the stack and hold them together on the ends with bands (one on the inside, one on the outside) holding the rows together and rubber bands clamping the dowels to each other. I do this on opposite ends and once you have a minimum of three on each end next to each other it holds itself up.

    I think, for the last basket, you were assembling it upside-down, so each piece was tapering toward the top instead of the bottom due to the 9 degree cut. If they each piece were flipped, including the base, it would have gone together smoothly!

    Do you find that your beard gets itchy from the sawdust?
    Man, I had to shave mine off - Drove me darn near nuts!
    And the crazy thing about it was is when I started shaving it off I could see saw dust flying out of my beard with each pass of the razor.
    Finally, relief after months of itching and scratching. Scroll saws and beards don't mix.
    Who knew?!

    On the woven basket I was trying to vibe you that you needed to put your first two stakes right next to each other to "capture" all the rings. I know this video is old, but I was hoping it would come to someone in the room. :)

    In cutting the concentric circles for the folding basket, wouldn't it be more stable(less chatter) to cut from the inside out?

  • @AllBlacksRWC2011
    @AllBlacksRWC2011 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem with the assembly of the woven basket is that the whole thing was upside-down. When you took the whole assembly over to the table you should have flipped it over so that the paper side was facing down or, alternatively, you could have set the scroll saw to saw the other way. When you tried taping the stakes to the base they would have flared outward, rather than inward, if it were the correct way up.
    I was going blue in the face here yelling at my computer screen "IT'S UPSIDE DOWN. TURN EVERYTHING UP THE OTHER WAY!!!" For some weird reason you were ignoring me though. ;-)
    Cheers on a great video though. It was a lot to get through in the time allocated and I'm guessing that if you had more time then you wouldn't have been so flustered and would have seen the problem yourself straight away. (y)

    a couple questions 1.) how big a drill bet are you using and do you need to have the scroll saw that has a tube like blade cause I have a very old scroll saw given to me by a friend .Nice work I am glad to have watched this video got a lot of information from it

    • @DragonHeart00926
      @DragonHeart00926 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The drill bit you use should be a tiny bit bigger than the scroll saw blade that you use

    Where can I find boxelder wood. For free or as low of cost as possible? Anyone know?if you know let me know thank you.

    • @gwinnettwoodworkers
      @gwinnettwoodworkers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of a source that you could buy it. Some of us have lucked out when someone had a tree come down and gave us a call. I have never seen any in our local lumber yards.

    • @gwinnettwoodworkers
      @gwinnettwoodworkers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only way I've found boxelder wood cheaply is in log form. If you can locate a tree removal service, you can offer them a "finders fee" to call you when they locate a boxelder tree for removal.

    over at Fabian's Tiny Workshop he shows a neat way to quickly set the scroll saw table top to the correct angle for any thickness of wood. He extends the thickness lines down the edge of the board and uses them as guidelines. th-cam.com/video/5zAXc6y9Xlo/w-d-xo.html
