Awesome licks!! My only suggestion would be to explain the theory behind each one of the licks in terms of “why” those notes were played in relation to the chord tones from the progression.

The theory to licks are modes and the notes played are notes that sound good. Licks are combination of notes ideas that sound and feel good. It also playing within chord changes. The thing about lick and groove is just learn many of them from others and in no time you will be able to create your own.

@@chigozieobialor1245 Well I think players here ask for the "theory behind", because "somebody" could directly say "sounds good" or "not so good". I think Steve's intention is to "know in advance" where this lick is applyable or fitting to be able to use them "in a song" appropriate. And if you don't know which lick is in which scala / mode, you screw it, when you play a major-lick on a minor-chord (simplified!!! There's much more). Or to know, how you can alter the lick to make it fit.

Yeah, I would appreciate that, too. But the licks and the playing is cool, so what I do: Try them, look which notes (not in C-D-E style but in root-third-fifth-style) are in there, what chord they are played to and then try to apply this to other songs. And watch for the chords (e.g. major / minor). And for me, the exact lick Jermaine played ... one thing, cool stuff. But I'm not learning these riffs "exactly". They give me ideas, to break out of my "standard-playing". So trying them out ... saying "ohohoh, that's a cool move, never had the idea to do _that_ move" and add this to my patterns for building my own riffs. Search for playalong tracks on TH-cam - there are so many. You will find some matching your style. And then try out the licks and alter them. Have very much fun and a nice evening!

The first lick is the pentatonic (123 56) from the base chord C#.
C# - 1
D# - 2
F - 3
F# - 4
G# - 5
A# - 6
C - 7
Then the first lick will be like:
565 321 65 4
Why he's playing like that?
Coz he's running from 6th chord to 4th chord

Hey guys thanks for the comments. Not sure if you all are aware but these licks are not exclusive to 6 string bass just because they were played on 6 string. All of the licks take place within the 4 strings E-A-D-G... Just ignore the Top B String and High C String if you have to... Sorry that it's confusing to some of you.

Great video! And I love your logo - combining the bass-clef with yout "J" is really cool! So I was specially searching to this "half-tone-fast-sliding-thing". Sadly, you sometimes omitted it in the slower version, but I think I got it. Heard that really often from cool bass players, but I wasn't sure what's going on there. So I will go thru your video in detail and try out. And try to get "on which note that can fit" ... Great inspiration!
One small thing: Your bass is really a beauty and sounds great. I love my basses without markers on the fretboard, too. But for "instructional videos" it's more easy to "see" where you are on the fretboard, if the bass has markers (how do you say? I'm no native english guy) at 3-5-7-etc. But keep going, liked, will watch more of your channel! Thanks, Stefan

This video is really really cool. The 1-5-6-4 is one of the most extremely more common progressions and this definitely pushes the knowledge of the pentatonic scales just out of the box when playing over that relative minor chord and the 4. Thanks dude really cool shops.
