I have listened to it multiple times over the years. The thing that makes it even sweeter is that the God given talent is played back to God in worship.
amen to this! I really dislike how the message tends to be "use your gifts to God" but somehow except if you're a musician, then tone it down please so you don't mess up the PEOPLE'S ability to follow along. Problematic because: a) if someone is grown in a method of experiencing music, ie exposed to high skill levels for their lives, they can follow along b) why are we toning down a God-given gift because PEOPLE dont' understand it? Pearls before swine I say...
He still got the hottest bass lick on YT all these years later... man I was at a different place in life back then and this thing still transcends all that time. Still holding it down and inspiring young and old players alike!
Scott shows respect and admiration for all styles, good on him. It can inspire young musicians the world over that haven’t been exposed to gems like this. I played guitar at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Austin, Tx for 7 years and this energy happened weekly. Some days more intense than others, but always uplifting and energetic. Many people will never experience being in the center of this. Our music pit was directly in front of the choir and it would make the hair stand on the back of your neck! I even enjoyed weekly rehearsals with the choir. There is nothing like it. I wish everyone could experience this. There are so many phenomenal musicians you’ll never hear of that only play in churches like this. Much respect to them all!!✊🙏
Saw this year's ago - Reed's playing dances around the metronome on this one, even the air bass player can't keep up. The drummer needs to be given some credit too...
Best mode indeed, even on a 1st Gen Jazz V. This video literally changed my entire perspective of how I played bass. It gave me an entirely new destination of what I wanted to work toward.
Man, I love seeing this again and again. I still remember the first time I saw it. I've played bass in a lot of church and youth gatherings, but how good is this!?!??!?!? Love it.
There's another video like the Sharay Reed one in Chicago that was filmed here in Detroit. For anyone interested type in " Thaddeus Tribbett KILLIN @BRL conference 09". If you read this comment Scott, there's some *SERIOUS* licks to break down in that one too!
Oof. And Scott is a straight killer on his instrument. So that's saying a lot. Scott goes beast mode himself, and even he was like, "Da-, err, I mean dang!"
So many great players come from gospel music. I saw a bad ass pedal steel player and he told me “ he learned in church”. Still won’t get me in church but I’m glad something good is coming out of it!
Hey Scott; try the great Anthony Jackson's contribution to the Stevie Wonder tune "As" on Jean-Luc Ponty's Mystical Adventures album! Like halfway into the tune, he starts playing a line that I'm having trouble figuring out the chords he's playing.
Scott, your tribute and accordance is heavenly here, as a spirit. But, beautiful friend, your playing is behind what S did. It's not insult, because the SCOTT stuff that you ARE is genius as who YOU are. So it's okay, because we need to leave him alone and not try to copy it. Just leave his stuff alone with your bass. We are not him. It's like WHY DO WE TRY TO BE ANOTHER ONE'S FINGERPRINT? We cannot. You can't. But bless your amazing heaven here as a learning and sharing community. Let it be better felt than told, and certainly better felt than slow attempts to copy it and teach it, wonderful Scott. His place in our heart is JUST LIKE YOUR place in our hearts: the moment he did HIM, at that very moment.
Wait, wait, wait.......I hear what you're saying, but let him cook, let him cook. I'm with you that it's tough for Scott to match that (and that's saying a lot, because Scott is a killer on his instrument frfr). But Scott can actually understand what's going on with Reed's playing. We need Scott doing this. Lol. I didn't even know there were harmonics in this until Scott broke this down. At one point, I was like "This is wild! I could NEVER!" But now I'm like, "This is wild!!!! I might be able to do this one day!"
Your ability to breakdown godlike plays and pass it down to us mortals is in itself godlike 😅 Pls do a breakdown for the bass cover, Levitating played by aaronthebassist. Thank you!
I know you don’t like 5 strings Scott....but that second lick is the reason gospel players typically play with 5. Because when you hit that last note of the lock on that B string....mannnnn it’s just so much fatter and gives it that FEEL!
Thanks for another great lesson, Scott! I think sometimes we get so caught up in tasty fills and busy lines these days (and rightfully so) that we don’t spend enough time checking out classic pop bass lines. I would suggest highlighting John McVie. A good place to start is Say You Love Me.
One of my favorite Bassists, ever! Who was the first Bassist to come up with that Funk mute style with gaps? I was asking Gerald Albright this very question last night. Was it Jamerson, Chuck Rainey, Me'shell Ndegeocello? 🤔
Inspiring and depressing at the same time!!! But the cool part is, there is hope for us mere mortals!! With focus and due diligence, we too can become, “BASS BEASTS!!”
Scott, bassist that's underrated would love to see you feature is Zach Cooper from Coheed and Cambria. His work on Domino the Destitute and bass licks on Here to Mars are right up your alley.
Aaaaaaaah i wanted you to analyse the licks that u show at the end of the video, thats my favorite part, that's what made me think years ago "maaaan u have to check out some gospel stuff if u wanna groove"
I would love to see a "less is more" video where you go over some lines that serve the song, but serve it well, and maybe have an occasional flash. I know everyone may not enjoy that kind of thing but I think it would be interesting.
I am with you! A second Amen! Beast mode is fine, but a killer groove with tastefully placed spaces will kill me more than a beast mode lick and/or solo. Marcus Miller once said (paraphrase) "Ultimately, the baddest groove should blow away the hottest solo", or something like that - in an interview with Bass Player Mag. I couldn't agree more. My favorite Marcus bass playing his his subdued "beast mode" when he came up with an incredible groove for MIles, or Luther or Sanborn. Or Tony Levin on the live version of "Red Rain" with his 5 string......... Wow! Less is more.
Shawn Davis has a lick in B on it productions strange arrange studio version. I would like to know the theory behind the lick and not note for note so I can come up with similar licks
Sorry learning what others have created is great. But being the actual person who creates these licks is something else, that come from within the soul!!
Yeah that's what most people ain't talking about. You look within your soul it's there too. Because Sharay does stuff here that only Sharay could do. He turns certain lines inside out/backwards and is able to come back to the 1 or rejoin at anytime while playing off beat. Technically he's doing what a drummer does but with a Bass. And like you said learning it is one thing but coming up with it is another because if you learn this song, when will you actually get to use it? PROBABLY NEVER. Because that's a whole different rendition of joy to the world. I'm with you man, 100.
Hi Scott, Brilliant video and Sheray is an outstanding bass player. Could you do a video tutorial on the bass line for "Time" by Edwin Starr - a classic piece of funky Northern Soul? Thanks, Jason

Those 5 million views were just 5 bass players trying to figure this stuff out a million times.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂man this might just be true bro
Can confirm, at least 3K of those views are me 😜
The omments under the video say otherwise.
haha
Tagging here for visibility :-)
Please do an analysis of the Gospel licks in the following video:

The bass world has slept om church musicians! Alot of bass players been getting down like this for years. In church.
Are you sure about that? Prominent bassists have always been in gospel music as far back as I can remember.
Right
Not at all.. all black musicians are formed in church.. & only get better when they go to school to learn theory
@@claykingmuzik very true..we learned how to improvise and play by ear in church
Reggie Parker, Steve Huff, Reggie Young, Joel Smith and Andrew Gouche are some of the best bass players I've heard. They are all Gospel bass players.
Never gets old!! And that Drummer
That drummer seemed like Varo Johnson, when he is much younger
I saw it in 2009 and since then I showed it to every musician I know.
Sharay Reed is always on BEAST MODE!!!
Always!😎
@@carlodmatrix Look up synonyms for 'beast mode'. One of them is 'Sharay Reed'.
Saw this year's ago - Reed's playing dances around the metronome on this one, even the air bass player can't keep up. The drummer needs to be given some credit too...
Yeah he solid for real!!!
The drummer is incredible
Sharay is incredible! Such a humble guy too!
The ending licks give me chills every time.
When I show it to people I know the exact spot. 2:06 the nastiest lick I’ve heard for gospel bass.
Best mode indeed, even on a 1st Gen Jazz V. This video literally changed my entire perspective of how I played bass. It gave me an entirely new destination of what I wanted to work toward.
Its actually the Suhr Era AmericanDeluxe from 1996-1997 with big pole John Suhr pick ups and preamps
It honestly never gets oldddddddd 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Man, I love seeing this again and again. I still remember the first time I saw it. I've played bass in a lot of church and youth gatherings, but how good is this!?!??!?!? Love it.
Love it.. Christmas Carols never sounded so darn funky!❤️🔥🎸😎
I’ve seen it 5 or 6 years ago and was absolutely amazed by Sharay. Been a fan every since.

Even scott still didn't fully nail it (the way Sharay played it at least)
Oof. And Scott is a straight killer on his instrument. So that's saying a lot. Scott goes beast mode himself, and even he was like, "Da-, err, I mean dang!"
“Level 42 “! So many great bass lines . “ good man in a storm “ . Thanks mate!
Great bass line! I love Mark King
Me: *watches video*
Also me: *looks at bass*
My bass: tf you looking at
'Time Won't Wait' Some great phrasing and articulation going on there.
That's one of my favorite bass lines ever!
So many great players come from gospel music. I saw a bad ass pedal steel player and he told me “ he learned in church”. Still won’t get me in church but I’m glad something good is coming out of it!
The tone of his bass is unlike anything I've ever heard, amazing
Oh man, that fill. I spent ages trying to get that into my playing. Great lesson Scott.
Dave
I remember when these vids came out, lost count of times I watched them, never gets old, awesome breakdown Scott D!
I would love to see a video like this about Maurice Fitzgerald. Specially playing with Fred Hammond
1000% yes to this 🔥
That would be 🔥🔥
Yes, yes and yes!!
an equally intense video is aaron spears playing "praise him" in new york. he said he thought he was gonna die
Sharay cited that his upright history gave him his great position approach with the left hand.
Scott, I love you for making this video...
I remember playing that clip over and over and over again!
Hey Scott; try the great Anthony Jackson's contribution to the Stevie Wonder tune "As" on Jean-Luc Ponty's Mystical Adventures album! Like halfway into the tune, he starts playing a line that I'm having trouble figuring out the chords he's playing.
Man.. Anthony is the granddaddy of this type of playing. His bass part on Chaka’s I was made to love him... 😩 still gives me shivers.
The extended jam section on Chameleon from Head Hunters.
Amazing. I did a reaction to this video. Sharay is an amazing bass player.
I view that vid at least 1 time a year... maybe 2, since it was released. Just for the feels
The three times Thaddeus Young went beast mode!!!!
Oh man.
Yikes or thad tribbett

You went full beast mode using a snippet of Stan Getz's "Ipanema" solo to bleep your 'oh sh**!"
When you isolated the bass and did a slodowner the Barney Miller TV show music intro stumbled through my ears...
The three time Cliff Burton went beast mode pls
by god, this is what we need right now
When did you go beast mode Scotty
Scott, you rock for doing this one!! Love what you’re doing!!
The best bass, keys, & guitar licks are heard in church.. Big facts!!
Anything from the bass player from Dirty Loops. BEAST!!
Thanks you so much Scott! This bass line i wanted to learn for so long!

John Mayer bold as live live in la (2007) from about 1.20 onwards, especially in the first solo. Pino goes beast mode again
you ask, here is the answer. My favorite bassline; Arthur Adams and Inculcation Band, You got the Floor, 1981
Great analysis and break down! Very well done!
There's a video of Sharay Reed playing Diamonds by Rihanna. Cheeky lick on 1:50 then beast mode on 4:00ish. Pure class
Thanks!
Rain by The Beatles. Really really amazing and cool bass line.

Scott, man you was smoking this!! So slick!
Dave Chapelle did a stand called "For What It's Worth" . There's bass intro & outro in that stand-up that's just amaze balls . . . can you di it?
He's like a living stereotype of a typical bass player hahaha
come on scott! surely a jazz bass would have been fitting for such a video haha!
Scott you are amazing brotha!
the slap lick of Henrik linder on Circus!
His playing reminds me of Randy Hope-Taylor

Chuck Rainey’s part on Until You Come Back to Me, Aretha Franklin
Hi Scott....how about the Pino Solo on the 2015 North Sea Jazz with D'Angelo in Sugah Daddy
Chicago guy up in Da house of BASS!
Great lesson, as always. You can do Don't Start Now. Or another bites the dust.

Gospel is the cradle of the beastest bass licks
Do one for Jeff Andres... We kno you love him!
Whole that video is in beast mode. He makes it look easy though, because Mr Reed aint playin no bass, no. He became The Bass. Thats right
Can't beat 16th BASS lines, would be great to have some tips how to orientate with 16th real catchy
Thank you
Suggest Noel Pointer - Superwoman feat. Anthony Jackson on bass🤔
Tab says 11th fret on the d string for the c#, but Scott plays it on 6th on the g string. Oh well.

My Forbidden lover......Bernard Edwards - Chic...... anything by him tbh !!!!
