    They all sound good. If I had to pick one I think I'd pick the v67g as a good all around microphone. The fact that Innogear shockmount can fit the big fatty 990 is impressive. I have three different standard shockmounts to fit the three standard microphone diameters, but with the Innogear shockmount it looks like you can use the one shockmount for all the different sizes of microphone.

    I thought the 770 was smaller too, but I was remembering the 990XL which is actually huge, and has the same capsule as the V67.. I thought the V67G sounded slightly warmer, but also somehow a little thin. It also has a less pronounced proximity effect, which surprised me given the larger capsule, but that's neither bad nor good. Depends on your tastes..

    ive both 770 (-10db switch black olor) and v67g (golden parrot)
    in short v67g sounds crisp, but i need to speak or rap or sing louder or increase the gain. the mids are good.
    770 has a bassy punch/presence and i needn't increase the gain as much as i did for 67g.
    770 in my opinion is good for rap vocals and v67g is good for country, acoustic vocals.

    V67G was super sensitive and picking up more background sound, which isn’t wanted if you can’t record in a sound sealed studio. I listened on EarPods at full volume and I could hear that the 990 was the loudest in pickup, and least background noise was captured. So the V67G could have it’s benefits if wanting more of a room sound when for example recording a folk band in your living room and you don’t want to fully single out every single instrumentalist, you could have V67G microphones on each instrument, but the 990 on the vocalists.

    990 and v67g have similar frequencie curves, although the 990 has more presence and a bit more low end, the 770 really does sound closer to a NT1, scooped in the mids, boost in the low and high ends, defenitely better for recording vocals or acoustic guitars, the 990/v67 i'd use more as overheads, less harsh in the high end. In fact i use 2 v67 myself, 1 for my ride cymbal, and 1 as a room mic, pretty decent microphones.

    Your video is a great comparison. I feel that your processing ruins the sound slightly. It may be how you have the processing set up. For me, it's the 770. I own a Manley reference mic and the differences when I use the V67 or the 990 do not justify 3K versus 100 bucks. I'd go for a really good preamp instead of the Manley mic. I'm currently using a Manley VoxBox as my main vocal preamp. The Voxbox brings out good things from the V67. The only problem is that the V67 and the 990 have a bit more self noise in my opinion.

    My comment is more recent than the others (mid-2023) but it might help someone considering these mikes. I have the MXL 990 and think it is quite nice. I have a few other mikes including an old Shure SM5B - the giant capsule looking mike, now discontinued. Everything depends on HOW the mike is going to be used and WHAT type voice is speaking into it! To my ears the V67G has more high end and in a pleasant way - less bass than the others. The 770 seemed to have SLIGHTLY more high end than the 990 and slightly less bass - again in a pleasant way. The 990 (again to my ears) had more bottom end (bass) response and somewhat less of the treble. Since I do voice overs, I can use that bottom fullness and add some EQ processing to gain the highs. I personally never do podcasting but I think if I did the V67 or the 770 might be a better choice cause they seem to be pretty much plug and go for folks who are not used to doing EQ adjustments. Here again is the fact if someone has a rather thin (higher pitched) voice, the 990 might be preferred. If they have a full, deeper voice for podcasting the 770 or V67 would do well. And pointing to another review you did of the Donner DC-20, everyone should watch that and see how well it stacks up to all of these for 50 bucks!!!!!!! Pretty amazing, though I haven't seen a direct comparison for the MXL's and the Donner. THANKS for another great review!!!!!! These things really do help folks!!!

    I bought a 990 and it was a disappointment. First of all it was said at the time to be a large diaphragm condenser however it has a rather small 20mm diaphragm that sits in a dummy ring that makes it look bigger through the grill. Mine sounded thin and tinny. I test used it once and immediately sold it. My V67 has proven to be a much better mic. This said I believe they are no longer saying it is a large diaphragm mic.

      I prefer the v67 myself. The 990 is fine....but...just fine. The metal baffle does serve a purpose though....and that's improvement of rejection from the rear

    The 990 surprising sounded REALLY good when you got up close to it.

    the 990 is better. pretty close to the 770 though... the v67 sounds a little boxy, the mid range is a bit too much, the processing kinda solved this, i guess

    the 67 is legitimately one of the ugliest consumer products I have ever seen

    i understand the 990 is a good starter mic and alot of ppl like it but god do i hate the sound of it. it has something harsh to it in the upper mids. it sounds unbearable to me and very fatiguing over time.

    • @ObscureMics
      @ObscureMics  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually agree. It’s good in short bursts but the longer I use one the more I think it sounds funky in the mids and highs

    After trying so many microphones, I was surprised to find out that my forever microphone that just happens to work The Best on my voice is MXL CR89. I got curious about other MXL microphones and of course yours is my go to channel for hidden gems mics . I really like this comparison. For my vote the V67 has a really silky smooth character to it. However I actually prefer the 770 on your voice. There’s just a little bit of Neuman honk in the 67, without the charm of Neuman that can make the honk less noticeable. The 770 is a beast to my ears on your voice
