MXL 550 and MXL 551 Microphone Review / Test (is this inexpensive condenser kit any good?)

- Today, I have The MXL 550 and MXL 551 in the studio! Both of these mics are Condenser microphones with cardioid polar patterns. One is meant for vocals (550) and the other is meant for instruments (551). Sadly, I didn’t get to do as many instrument tests as I wanted to, do to my vox needing new tubes, but if anyone wants a 551 guitar cab test I would be happy to film another section and send the link!
Check out the testing and audio samples and see if this is right for you! Every person has different expectations of audio gear. If the features are what you need, and you like the sound, then it is right for you!

Thanks, as always, for a highly informative video. Just FYI, your popularity has boosted the price of the M Audio Nova microphone to $90. Looked fairly hard & found 1 on ebay for $89.
One other video reviewed the M Audio with same rating.

Also, it's really hard to find a Nova nowadays... I'm having trouble finding one.
NekoOkto the places to find the Nova are eBay and Reverb. eBay is usually the better deal. It definitely does take some patience finding discontinued mics though! One thing to do is to set up a notification on eBay for when sellers add the Nova! Here are a couple for a good price on eBay right now:

Ive got exactly the same mics and they don’t have plastic bits on them...they’re all metal cased and the shiny silver parts and the grill are metal as well....im wondering the authenticity of the one you’re reviewing...

The colour of the microphones is a turn off, but......man, it sounds good. It flatters your voice .
Also the blue one that they also have?

Try your mic at the acoustics lower left hand of the body rather than the sound hole. Sounds much better IMO.
can anyone help? i have my mxl 550 mic but when i listen to my recording it has slight static and i already looked at most issues and i have no idea. any ideas?
drippynick it could be due to electrical interference, are there any other cords directly on top of your XLR cable or interface? I have also had that issue when I put my cell phone on top of my interface.
Also, your XLR cable could be going bad, have you tried different ones?
Audio Hotline there isnt any electrical inteference and i just changed them and they still have slight shocks. i have the sample rate at 4800 and the buffer size 192 i still don’t know
Did you just get the mic? Or have you had it for a while and this static sound is a new thing? Or has it always had that sound?

I think mics in general have gone up due to the situation right now. I was thinking about the MXL 990 and that has gone up about 20 or 30. I could be wrong but that's what I see.

These microphones are now so expensive. The bottom end of the frequency spectrum is rather rolled off.

The grill and reinforcement around the mic are indeed metal and NOT Plastic. You are entirely incorrect on that. Please do better research.
