I will forever hate Instagram fact accounts because as a gullible 12 year old, I went on Instagram to find one of these posts saying “WiFi doesn’t actually stand for anything” this fact later cost me a competition. I was in a trivia competition and was close to first place. Then they asked *the* question. “What does WiFi stand for?” As an intellectual 12 year old, I buzzed in and said with confidence, “trick question, nothing”. It cost me my dignity and intellect. How was I, a small child, supposed to know that WiFi stood for Wireless Fidelity. Fuck that and fuck Instagram fact accounts.

The grass one is basically right, that "freshly cut grass" smell, that's grass trying to save itself. The smell is a bunch of chemicals that do a few things: stimulate the growth of new cells to heal the wound faster, act as an antibiotic, cause the production of defensive hormones in unharmed parts of the plant, and act as a distress signal. So for example, if Bug A is eating the grass, and Bug B likes to eat Bug A, the smell emitted by the grass will attract Bug B to it to eat Bug A, which in turn defends the grass.

Well the Beauty and the Beast thing is correct, the idea was that the Beast was kind and Belle was the one that had to look past his appeareance, it was like saying "Girls I know you were just taken away from your family and every you've never known and now you are in an unwanted relationship with someone who seems like a monster and wants to do weird things to you, but by not loving them YOU are the ones who are wrong, you have to put all the effort into the relationship and learn to love him, not doing so will be selfish and superficial"

The original beauty and the beast was rooted in the idea of accepting arranged marriages. A lot of stories from that era were. It was meant to ease girls faced with the idea of spending time with "a monster" by teaching them that if they are kind and obedient these men will have a better less monstrous side to them. Or at least it came from that idea. A lot of stories for young girls from that period carry that sentiment (be kind to the monster and you will find happiness) None of is that direct and obv. Disney went for a beauty within angle, but the fact itself while vague and unconvincing wasn't wrong.

It's actually true though. I read a nonfiction book about plants (wish I could remember the name) but yes, that snell is due to a chemical released to signal distress to other nearby plants. It can be helpful for plants that produce toxins in response to being eaten by bugs, because they have the chance to concentrate those toxins in the leaves. Of course, this doesn't do much when the bugs are actually a giant lawnmower.

The distress signal in grass and other plants is actually pretty cool. The distress signal attracts other insects (like wasps and hornets) to come to the grass being eaten, since the grass thinks it's being "killed" by a bug or plant-eating insect. The relationship allows the grass to be protected by the wasp, and for the wasp to food from the plant, so it's a win-win for the grass and wasp.

Grass, lettuce and other plants were discovered to warn nearby examples of danger through scents and root vibrations (quite literally “screaming” for creating rumbles). This makes the warned plants mass produce a very bitter chemical, so attackers are stopped from eating the whole bunch :D

Funniest not-sober Amazon purchase I’ve ever seen was actually while on very strong painkillers and it was a knitting friend of mine. She had just had major surgery and while still quite “hungover”/kinda-intoxicated from the anesthesia, she ordered a 5lb tub of sprinkles. The rainbow jimmies, tbe. It took her a year or two to eat them all but when she finished them out earlier this year, she actually considered buying more, lol.
Frankly, I made cakes and candies and despite using sprinkles often in that kind of stuff (I give away most of what I make as I’m a single woman), I go through maybe one 2oz bottle, total, per year. It’s kinda hard to track, though, as I often use as many as 5 types of sprinkles during Christmas alone.

Plants send out pheromones when being damaged to let other plants prepare. It seems kind of useless but when one plant is cut or damaged it sends out those pheromones and other plants in the vicinity actually increase their chemical defenses (immune system, etc) in response.

The fast about the cut grass smell being chemicals released due to distress is correct. The reason grass does this is to attract certain insects that can fend them from attackers. (grass eating bugs, etc.) The whole pain thing is pretty far off though, seeing how plants don't sense damage like us. Don't worry. Vegans won't have to stop eating plants as well.

Actually about the grass one, it's less of a distress signal and more of a "yup we're dying and should do something about ti" because the "signal" (the scent) tells the other grass to create more growing juice and release seeds. Not that anyone properly cared, but it's kinda interesting I guess.
The plants nearby thicken their leaves to protect from bugs they obviously can’t stop a lawn mower though so to grass it’s just hearing your friends tell you to get ready for something dangerous and then you get cut in half
