MAN I wish this guy was my teacher 😭 this video could have easily been 2 hours longer and we'd still keep teaching new things. One day I hope to be at least quarter as good and knowledgeable of a grower as this man is.

Happy New Year Hunter. That was the most interesting video ever. I appreciate your guest John's special knowledge that he has acquired through a long and meaningful life and how effectively he is able to teach and communicate complex information and life processes so well. John is a valuable Elder to learn from. Thank you for sharing him with us. May you be blessed in 2025. BYW I love your art/pottery.

49:00 and that is why our plants act like they're in "shock" or take long periods to grow again after an aggressive repot, we ripped off the root hairs that are absorbing water and nutrients and they need to regrow before the plant itself will show happy results. Keep learning Keep growing 🌵 🌴

Found this discussion endlessly fascinating! The germination rate from those 34 year old boojum seeds is unreal, especially considering they lived in his freezer 😲. As a fellow AZ cactus collector, this motivated me to jump more into plant physiology and how it correlates to growing here in the Southwest. Thanks so much for featuring Jon on the channel. I need to check out his nursery sometime soon!

For watering potted plants, using collected rain water stored in tanks seems to be an excellent practice here in Arizona where we have very hard tap water.

Only problem is that the rain water stored outside gets so hot in the summer.

Very informative. Thank you. Many people don't understand when I try explaining what it is that causes damage from freezing temperatures in plants . And how to prevent excessive damage when they have absorbed so much here in the southeastern us . Telling them that the desert southwestern us gets freezing temperatures also but that the amount of moisture in the soil and plant tissue is much lower and so concentration of sugars keep cells from freezing solid. As with conifers the thick sap helps them . Going back to the problem of salts in soils I find it so interesting that some plants will take the added salts and move into the tips or entire leaves that are going to be discarded. Plants are so smart . So are you 😊. Happy New Year

I really appreciate all the scientific discussion. thanks. You can't really understand how to take care of your plants if you don't understand the plants' biology specifically their anatomy and physiology. btw: I'm in zone 7a and have cacti in the ground around my house and each winter they desiccate as he describes in the video. that's how they survive freezing temperatures. not all cacti have this adaptation to extreme cold. those that do we call "cold hardy cacti."

I've been a cacti lover since the 90's but during covid, my interest shifted towards vegetable gardening. Your videos ignite my interest towards cacti and succulents again! ❤
I've gotten most of my big cacti from Bach's cactus nursery in Tucson. I need to check out this place when I go back to Tucson again.

Finally, I can see a cacti grover who knows what he's talking about. There is a huge difference when you can see someone with a scientific background.
Several year ago I've turned away from cactus pseudo-knowlegde created by grovers and started dive into soil science and agriculture.
The topic of water potential is a indeed interesting and helpful in growing cacti. Over a year ago I've found some studies on germinating cacti seeds at different water potentials - that's when I've discovered this topic for the first time. It turns out that you can expect that the higher water potential is, the higher germination percentage will be and it works for majority of plants, including cacti. Saying it different way, germination decreases proportionally to water potential decreasing. There are some minor exceptions, but this is a general rule.
That's why all those fancy substrates for germinating seeds makes no sense, as the only thing you need are: plastic container/petridish/zip bags, pieces of paper towel and some filtered water or agar. If you want to sow directly into a substrate, pretty much any growing medium with a decent water holding capacity, that is chemically almost neutral would do the job.
