Huw, thanks for sharing this garden with us. It's a piece of art quite honestly and I enjoyed listening to Mr. Coward. What an honor to be the custodian of such a garden. (Kentucky, USA)
Hey, Darin in KY. 👋 (I'm residing in SoIN, Clark County). @huwrichards and Mr. Tom Coward, have ya'll tried pickling magnolia blossoms? Didn't know it was possible until I saw Brad Leone do it. 🌱 Thanks all for this inspiring post.
Such a beautiful kitchen garden. The horticultural skills of Tom Coward and his team are apparent. I could watch him talking about the garden all day long. Thanks for doing this Huw.
Wasn't sure if I was going to watch , but the way the head gardener speaks is very calming and I got sucked in immediately. Just seems like a real cool guy , and he gardens and works in a historical manor , so he is basically living my dream.
Mr. Coward's love and passion for his garden are evident in every word. How wonderful to have a job that brings such joy and beauty to everyone. (Mississippi, USA)
Wow! What a stunning garden. I love the frost gate and the way they’ve directed the airflow; that is something I’d be keen to learn more about doing in my own garden.
The old vege garden at our house has the issue of trapping cold air behind a large Macrocarpa hedge. It's annoying because frost can form there and damage tender plants, while the rest of my garden is virtually frost free. The hedge is essential though, bcause we suffer garden destroying wind at regular intervals. My thought is to cut a hole in the hedge at the lowest point at put a gate in. Whether this would move enough air, I'm not sure?
I am almost 77, 18 months ago started new veg/ fruit/ flower garden. Gardening is never a chore to me, my health and sanity intimately tied to the soil since I was about3 years old. My husband died in 2002, my son in 2013, and my partner earlier this year so with out the comfort of my garden life soul be very depressing and stressful😊😊😊
Watching this was my Wow moment for the week. I'm not sure what the larger treat was: viewing the magnificent garden or listening to Mr. Coward. Now I'm going to fritter away a big chunk of the day re-watching The Victorian Kitchen Garden and planning for spring. 😂
What fascinating thought and engineering to consider drainage to capture and protect from the _flow_ of the air like that, just as if it were liquid! I had never realized garden walls could serve much purpose beyond _holding_ warmth that was already there (apart, of course, from supporting espaliers and vines and such). But then, I am a flatlander born and bred, so the weather physics of valleys and hillsides simply aren't in my experience. Mr. Coward speaks well, too; what a treat this interview is!
This was AWESOME! Great Job! I'm a Chef Instructor and run our family's farm. We have produce, poultry, cattle and a very small grocery bill. I live in Mississippi so tell Tom if he wants any Southern Magnolia seeds to play with, farmer to farmer, we can make that happen. Merry Christmas! ✊️
Stunning kitchen garden. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this garden from the very articulate Mr. Coward. He was as informative as the garden was beautiful.
I'm lucky enough to have stayed (and eaten) at Gravetye a few times - absolutely fabulous garden and Tom is an absolute gem too - super knowlegable and more than happy to talk gardening to the guests staying at the hotel. He even gave me a few cuttings last time I was there - can't wait to go back again 😍
Gravetye is just down the road from where I live and the garden is magical and we have been lucky enough to eat there for special occasions and it is truly magical. The woods have been brought back into use for everyone to use as well.
What a comfort it is knowing that such a place exists. So much respect for the heritage, the people who went before - looking back and forward with so much care and integrity. Thanks for the video!
5:55 to 6,11: ''We don't restrict ourselves to heritage varieties...'' Brilliant! Many of Britain's greatest historical gardens that were great because they were radical, fresh and innovative, are now stuck in dusty, outdated museum mode. Dying apple trees get replaced with the same old stale heritage varieties that have zero disease resistance.
I'm a fourth generation farmer , master garden , soil engineer , 24 is my 40th year growing and I've never seen a more honest, down to earth and dead on garden rep.
The drone shots are fantastic. I'm in love with the structure of this piece of land. The garden looks amazing. Keep up the great work 💚👋🏼 greetings from 🇩🇪
This garden and Mr. Comfort are National Treasures! Such a wealth of knowledge and experience and history in this garden and its caretakers. I could listen to Tom all day. His pearl about hard work paying off in the long run so true. Thanks for taking us on a tour!
I cant believe I get to watch such amazing content for free. Beautiful video, thanks to all involved for making and sharing this. What an inspirational garden.
What a delight. I can never get enough of seeing this kitchen garden and the drone shots showed its true magnificence. After such a bad gardening season for me personally when I was beginning to consider giving up my allotment, this film has wetted my appetite again! Congratulations to Tom and his team.
This special place is just twelve miles away from where we live in Sussex A top country manor hotel . . . We have stayed overnight once or twice and visited their superb restaurant a good number of times when a ‘special occasion’ demands it. Everything is perfect, every time ! And a walk around the gardens is a must. Thanks for posting this video.👍🇬🇧 The kitchen garden is astonishing
A beautiful garden! Brings back a lot of memories when I was stationed with the military in England, near Oxford, in the late 1960's. I loved visiting the beautiful estates and gardens, and seeing all of the different plans and processes used.
I think for someone who is most often in front of the camera or the subject for their own productions; it can be difficult to not feature prominently in a video you make. I think the creative decision to allow the garden and its caretaker to do the talking, to tell their own story in a sense, is the most endearing aspect of this otherwise beautifully made video. Thank you for the video Huw, sometimes when nature is not quite accessible, the best we can do is be as close to it as possible: for many, videos like this are what fills that hole
Thank you for this video. All morning I was watching bad news from the UK. This video reminded me how much beauty is in this country. And the head gardener is so knowledgeable, I could listen to him for hours.
Great video!!!! I LOVE this gentleman's perspective and really appreciate his depth of knowledge of the historic and present importance of gardening and growing. Delightful to watch and listen to. Im still learning!❤❤❤❤
This video beautifully captures the essence of Gravetye Manor. It’s truly inspiring to see how the combination of traditional methods and innovative approaches brings such a vibrant and productive garden to life. The dedication of the team is evident in every corner. Thank you for sharing this horticultural gem! (Florida, USA)
I LOVE this! It's using one of the methods that I did with a living fence and conversion of flower beds. Small spaces and growing in restricted methods sometimes makes for wonderful produce.
This video about this garden and Mr. Coward is my absolute favorite! I love everything about this garden and its head gardener is truly a master at his profession. I love the hardscape and the layout of the garden, and the historical perspective is just frosting on the cake. I think I might have to see if I can find any books by the designer of this garden….although they may be out of print.🤔. TeresaSue
Thank you Huw and Mr Coward. I have seen images of this garden from high up. I was amazed at the beauty and shape just looking at the still image. I always wondered…….What an absolute treat to see it and hear all about it. The history, thought, decisions and low tech engineering that is behind this brilliant garden’s creation was very interesting. The exquisite beauty and managed abundance had me in awe.
Great video! Beautiful garden with such fascinating history! Appreciated Mr. Coward and all of the information and suggestions he gave... would love to hear more from him in the future! Christmas blessings to everyone! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕👵
Oh gosh, every word you said was pertinent. What an honour to be head gardener here. I too grow flowers and veggies and soft and hard fruit. And have a pond and trees and artwork and it’s a labour of love but I can’t not do it. Thank you for this inspiration
I had 5 acres with a very large garden along with 7 fruit trees, and then I retired and move to a house on a lake, and the garden is one of the things I really miss about the old house. Especially since now that I'm retired I could do much more than what I had been doing. This man is doing many people's dream job. I now live in Michigan and it's not uncommon to see on the menu "Seasonal" when it comes to a lot of things they serve, and most of the supplies come from local sources
This is a breathtaking garden! I love it! The gardener is very devoted to it. He cares a lot. My main question is: are all these plants native in that location? Planting non-native plants is a serious setback to nature, no matter where you do it.
Wonderful garden. Wonderful content. I have a small garden terrace. It's only recently that I've realised the importance of wind flow in my terrace garden to keep my plants healthy. Moving some of my pots to breezier spots have made a difference to things like leaf mould. Also allowing some of my basil flowers and other herbs to bolt. The flowers attract bees which in turn have improved the yield of my citrus fruits.
That was fascinating to see a walled garden that doesn't adhere to the William Cobbett 'Square' stereotype. It would be good to see and hear more from Tom and his garden maybe in the form of a calendar year or even just a quarterly summary of what they get up to. Also, it would be good to see more of the other William Robinson influenced gardens maybe?
This is exquisite. I’d love such a garden. I love growing veg, fruit and wild flower that are insect and bird friendly. Must visit it! My fave place in National Trust houses are the veggie gardens, and old greenhouses, orangeries. Thank you for sharing
If I was told there was a book called The Wild Garden I would have assumed it had just been published. But I see William Robinson’s 1st edition was published in 1870. After seeing this wonderful video that book is on my must read list.
Wow! I love Tom Coward, 20 years too late for me. I have to admit defeat with my garden now, but I created a flower and scented garden to whoever buys my house can enjoy.
That is no defeat - it is a legacy! I'd have looooooooved to buy a home with a beloved garden. Instead I got a blank slate of dead soil - so I'm hoping to create my own legacy. But I'm in an urban area, so I'm trying to use my labors to teach those who haven't had the chance to fall in love with plants yet. Introducing people to heirloom varieties bred for our climate and so forth. Anyhow, your labor of love matters. It does!
Much smaller scale but this is what I have tried to do at my home - 4 vegetable beds, 7 flower beds (including a shade garden), and a small orchard of varietal-grafted fruit trees and two grape varieties. Retirement is bliss!
What a narrator he is!
Huw, thanks for sharing this garden with us. It's a piece of art quite honestly and I enjoyed listening to Mr. Coward. What an honor to be the custodian of such a garden. (Kentucky, USA)
Awhh so glad you enjoyed it thank you☺️
He makes me think of Harry Dodson ❤

it was such an incredible experience to go visit the gardens in person and have a proper tour by Tom, absolutely exquisite place!!
What a lovely chap. He’s clearly done a lot of thinking and reflecting in his time. There’s a lot to learn from him!
absolutely...mygreathanks and blessings
Wow.... what a beautiful vegetable garden, with a very thoughtful gardener.
Wasn't sure if I was going to watch , but the way the head gardener speaks is very calming and I got sucked in immediately. Just seems like a real cool guy , and he gardens and works in a historical manor , so he is basically living my dream.
I would love to walk around the garden with him and just let him tell me about everything

I couldn't agree more
What a beautiful space! I’m in complete disbelief that something so perfect actually exists. It’s literally a Garden of Eden……
What a fabulous walled garden! Thank you for featuring it - and Tom Coward and Co. What a delight he is.
Great video, Hugh. We definitely need to see and hear more of Mr. Coward., a very interesting man indeed. Many thanks.

Thank you for this video! It is a lovely garden, and a brilliant mind managing it!
it's a very special place, thank you for watching:)
