In this lesson, you will learn what the study of chemistry entails, why chemistry is important, and the basic ideas studied in any introduction to chemistry. We describe chemistry as the study of matter and the chemical rearrangement of atoms in a chemical reaction. In chemistry, reactants are mixed together and products are formed. The products are formed as a result of the atoms in the reactants transferring or sharing electrons, and rearranging the order of the atoms and how the atoms are bonded. Chemical bonds are broken in the reactants, and bonds are formed in the products. In chemistry, we want to understand how these reactions occur, and we learn how to calculate how much product will form. We are also interested in how these reactions occur in aqueous (water) solution, as this is central in many chemical reactions. We also study the electron configuration of the atoms, gas laws including the ideal gas law, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, and more..

I've been failing chemistry for years, but God... The way you explain it just makes it so much simpler. I'm starting to genuinely see the joy in learning things for the sake of just knowing them. Thanks for that.

You are so genuine in your commitment to instruct and educate that I would recommend your procedure be adopted by teachers who care for their students by easing the way of acquiring knowledge Thank you

I love how you actually explain stuff instead of just shoving information into students' heads. I think that turns many students off about learning chemistry, since they're not understanding any of it and are just blindly memorising and accepting that things happen the way they do, without aksing why. If those students had you as a teacher, they'd be a much more interested in chemistry, as they'll understand that it's how we as a species study matter and the universe, and is not just a bunch of stuff to be memorised! Keep going, you're amazing

Jason you never cease to amaze me, watching this long introduction to a fundamental science was a real treat! Assuming the viewer knows nothing at all about the topic in these introductions is extremely important and valued here. I agree giving the viewer some neat facts and explanations (not just definitions and info that has no context) to motivate is an excellent teaching style. I didn't know the electric force was 10^39, that's something I've never come across and never recall that being stated in HS, fascinating. That phrase at the end too was a new one and one that will stay with me.
If you ever had a series on meteorology and advanced concepts on it that'd be a dream come true.

Thanks Jason. Stimulate us to look for solution by ourselves. It is not a easy way to activate multiple thinking process. I mean that most of us just sit there and wait for people feed us, so called passively learning. In the contrast, we are willing to seek for different description and definition to figure out some stuff we don't know after course. It is touching to my heart that you mention you are not someone knowing about everything, just trying to pass on these summarized stuff to make us love Chemistry. I have to say: Jason you are really a awesome, humble, and passionate teacher who is willing share knowledge by easy way. It is my honor to be in your course. I currently tutor eighth graders in the school system in various subjects, and one of the subjects they (admin) “voluntold” me to tutor recently is science. This introductory lecture is great, but one step further to dive into this chemistry will be more complicated. But the astonishing things about several facts that I have never heard before amaze me. Such as electric force is way greater than gravity. And its strong pulling power is acting in many ways, like how the polarized water in our body dilutes and eventually digests materials coming into our body to make each neccessary function working on. This lecture reminds me of the middle school curriculum. I remember we used to use elements more often than atom.
