In this lesson, you will learn how to use the periodic table to write down a chemical formula. We will learn about ionic bonds and covalent bonds and the difference between these two types of bonds. We will learn that ionic bonds involve the transfer of electrons between elements. Covalent bonds, in contrast, involves the sharing of electrons between elements.
I took chemistry many decades ago. Forgot most of it. You have reignited my curiosity. Thank you!

I learned more in this single lesson than I did in one year while in college. Now I realize how much information was left out when I was younger. The detailed explanations Mr. Gibson (Dr. Gibson?) provides is of enormous help to better understand the topics he teaches. As I've said before, hands down he's the best professor I've ever seen.

I took two years of high school chemistry and one year of college chemistry. Even so, I forgot a good deal of the material from 50 years ago. Most of my scientific interest has been in physics, so that's further reason for forgetting so much about chemistry. This was an excellent presentation to remind me about bonds. Thank you for the explanation about why ionic compounds are not molecules. Until this lesson, I thought all compounds of two of more elements were molecules, irrespective of the type of bond, but the crystal lattice structure is a good way to understand the nature of ionic bonds. I look forward to your lessons.

Great videos! I have a question w/r to ionic bonds: Salts like NaCl. If all the positively charged Sodium (cation) is attracted to the negatively charged Clorine (anion), then why is it that table salt in a box isn't locked up like a solid? Why are they in particle formation like sand in an hourglass? I have to assume the table salt has other atoms mixed in with the sodium and the chlorine?
I dont understand in covalent bonding the word share. Does this mean the electrons of the 2 atoms go around the other one in a figure 8 shape?
I wish i had a teacher like him when i was in highschool and college. I just recently gain interest in chemistry since most of ny colleagues are chemistry grad and our job mostly focus on particle synthesis. I'm the only one have Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) degree 😅. N my major doesnt really focused in chemistry much. But, i do understand enough to be able to do my job due to job experience and CLS still science 😂.

How to we fit the definition of molecule and compound in the case of ionic compound.
Because as per the definition two or more atom joined together is called a molecule and when it is only different atom joined it is called compound but it is also called molecule.
Then why NACL cannot be called molecule
You are a teacher.
Why is it h20 but ch4? Why not oh2 or h4c?
So basically atom with strong electric force and atom with weak electric force cause the process of gaining and losing the electron and once this process is done based on +ve and -ve charge ionic bond is formed

You said 2 metals do not bond; are you familiar with metallic bonding? You also said that an ionic compound is not a molecule; are you aware that all compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds?
Why do we care about the angles at which molecule is formed ?
Lots of reasons, what we are going to learn later is that the actual shape of the molecule including the bond angles is very very important for how the molecule behaves in real life. For instance, the proteins in your body perform their functions, not so much because of what they’re made of but because of the actual shape of the molecule in three-dimensional space. So the geometrical shape of a molecule, including the angles, is actually extremely important and chemistry, and also in biology.
