  • A brief tour of the function of the mechanical fuel pump from my 1960 Ford F100 pickup.
When I said there at the end that "the engine is pushing the lever", I should have been more specific. An eccentric lobe on the camshaft is actuating that lever as the engine turns.

Almost 10 years after you put the time in to explain the workings of the mechanical fuel pump. Much appreciated.

Mine has failed on my car, but it held up pretty good up til recently, I think the last ditch effort pulled throug just enough to get the van home, and this is where it sits now.
Engine is not demanding, being only a 1,449 ccm on the old Renault/Chevrolet Trafic 1985.
It gets it moving, while still being nice on the wallet.

perfect! I have a 1967 f100 and it doesn't want to start unless I put fuel into carb. My next step is to replace the fuel pump because it's so cheap. I believe mine has a filter as well on it. thx for the video!

Thats so odd, crazy how stuff was designed back in the day lol

Could a pump like that cause some kind of a vacuum leak at the seal?

  • @blurglide

What happens when you reach stagnation pressure (e.g., you let off the gas at high rpm, so the fuel pump is being driven fast even though demand for gas is very low)

I'm not certain, but I assume the carburetor bowl is designed with enough capacity for that extra pumped fuel.

Question? Please not get mad at me, Is it possible to run different fuel through the fuel pump besides gas like water it is a question I am trying to figure out about vapor or hho system or maybe Vapor if i can use the manual fuel pump still I have a 1985 F250 inline 6 (300) 4.9
I am trying to figure out away to make the fuel stretch longer I have on this truck is a single barrel carburetor and I am also trying to see on getting rid of the vacuum on it and make that system as simple as possible can someone have a clear diagram or picture i can see and maybe a parts list that can use... Sorry if i sound as if i do not make since or it sounds i am making riddles I am not trying to it is just how my mind works most of the time.

    Great video sir. Thank you.
I'm trying my second new pump on my 1960 Ford F-100 223 ci. First one didn't pump at all and it was a brand new vacuum style for vacuum wipers from LMC. Its almost like the lobe on the cam wasn't actuating the pump arm all the way. I thought maybe the lobe on the cam was wore down but that is highly unlikely. I am trying another pump and ordered this one from NAPA this time and it is a non-vacuum type for electric wipers. Praying this one works. I've had the worst luck trying to get fuel delivery to this motor. I tried 2 different inline electric fuel pumps and they either supplied too much or not enough fuel. All new fuel lines, new tank, new carb, etc. Could you please tell me what brand/type/model fuel pump you ended up getting to replace the old one with? Thank you. Matt.

that like using bike hand pump to creat pressure, imazing that it only create 4to 10 psi to suck gas from tank,
