Or one day in the life of a police captain... Everything I love in cinema: crooks and cops from the 50s, in superb black and white, with a solid plot, crossed by side investigations, which the captain manages one after the other, as if he were content to open and close drawers, but with admirable efficiency... And this captain is Edward G. Robinson, the immense, the unique Edward G. Robinson, excellently surrounded. Thank you very much for allowing me to see this film. I will see it again very soon.
Thanks for posting something GREAT from when Hollywood had that finest period of actors, film industry people that knew how to entertain, put out the best film...for all ages. We will never see Hollywood late '30's through '60's again. It is history.
Edward G. Robinson was facing the Blacklist and bankruptcy. He was losing his art collection to pay legal bills. And, yet, he still showed up for work and gave performances other actors only dreamed of delivering.
The best B movie I have seen. Ed G. is great and so are the supporting actors. Many sub-plots are interwoven; never a dull moment. The villains remain villains and I, as audience, have no sympathy for them.
Great plot. Great acting Edward G. Top notch Hollywood actor from the golden age. Kept us riveted to our seats. Of course, a lot of the procedures they used are totally banned and would never be allowed in today's modern police department. But still great drama. Great police action film. Will watch it again. Thank you Mr. Robinson
I like Edward G. Robinson see......... Yeah, see.............he's a good mug see........... Yeah. When you see "Lee Van Cleef" in the credits, you know he's gonna be a heavy. Yeah see...................... Now you mugs sit there and WATCH!!! NOBODY tells little Caesar what to do.........see. I loved those Bugs Bunny cartoons, the old ones where they parodied EGR.

Really great movie. Who ever wrote this was world class and deserves an Oscar. Edward G was sublime as always. Nice to see him the right side of the law. Very highly recommended film
That bank heist was filmed right here in the Beverly Hills business district - near Rodeo Dr. and Little Santa Monica Blvd. There were several other fine location scenes from around LA Metro, including that abandoned spa building where the bad guys hid out by the ocean at Santa Monica, San Pedro Harbor, where the boat was docked and, of course, along Hollywood Blvd. Eddie G. did a fantastic acting job in this, as usual. This was an interesting character for him.
@@AFaceintheCrowd01 Yes - the only thing missing was a scene in Chinatown, say in the intersection of Broadway and Ord after a shootout, and have one of the detectives look over at Eddie G and say, "...forget it, Captain, it's Chinatown..." We got that scene about twenty years later. That scene with Nicholson ranks up in the top five quintessential Los Angeles images.
Jay Adler. One of my favorite supporting actors of the 1950s. He just oozes sleaziness. AND we get Percy Helton too, as the headcase tormented by invisible aliens.
Writer gets an A÷ on this one. Love how stories r incorporated into the main one. Lots of action and very cleverly done. Gr8 role for Robinson but he's terrific n everything. 👍
Just because this a 1950's B&W movie does not automatically make it film noir. It is more accurately described as a police procedural/heist movie with a good cast and story line. The signature film noir use of stark and gloomy lighting and cinematography to convey a constant dread, depression and pessimism of the main character whose inevitable dark end cannot be changed are missing from this movie.

Corallewis, yes I hv seen it. An excellent noir film. Tks 4 ur recommendation. I cannot remember the name of this film. When a police officer is shot arresting a car thief, Captain Barnaby uses his skills and contacts to track down the culprits and uncovers a bank heist plan in the process. Barnaby has no qualms about bending the law to achieve his ends, including trumped up charges to persuade his only witness to cooperate or detaining some call girls to coerce their madam to help him. In the meantime he deals with everyday police business, juggling seemingly trivial matters with more serious ones.
@@joline2730 and 51 millions who are not. Why should everyone be forced to see all this clutter on the screen. Captions can be easily turned on or off. Not here.
I'm a retired defense attorney. This film is fairly accurate. First the police commit a burglary to get the address book then they file a false complaint against the witness to get him back in custody. So it is accurate, the cops have been lying since the beginning of policing. But I will tell you this, to a police officer, in the mind of a police officer, it's not a lie if you don't get caught. So forget about your oath and forget about your duty and perjury and all of that. If you're not going to get caught it's perfectly okay to lie.
I've NEVER seen Eddie G. in a bad movie yet, and this is no exception. Brilliant as always 💯💯
I just saw him in black Tuesday yesterday. Real good.
