When I was a brand new runner I went to a running specialty store to get my first pair of running shoes, they had said I needed a strong motion control shoe so I took their word for it and ran in motion control shoes for years. However, I would often get knee pain and other little pains but I thought it was due to my running rather than trainers. I decided to go back and speak to the running store again and this time they helped me get into a nice neutral trainer, since then I've fallen I've had no issues even with higher run volume! So in my experience the running specialty store can be a great place to help you get the right pair, but if you start to feel pain don't be afraid to go back and get a second opinion! Great stuff man :) have a great day!
Thank you for sharing that! Your needs from a running shoe can change over time! As you get stronger, the need for a stability shoe may go away! Great tip Brendon!
@@myBSlife What a terrible experience to have! I hope the staff at that store has been updated or that you found a better place to patronize! A good fitting is invaluable - I've found that most runners and running store staff are positive, helpful people - don't give up!
Thank you for doing this! I forgot how the shoe-buying process goes for a new runner. This really showcases the value of the local running store and why we need to show them our support in this age of the online giants.
Purchased my Ghost 13s two years ago as my beginner shoes (for ~$100). I can say they've served me well for just over 400 miles. Stumbled accrss your video before buying my next pair of shoes and running my first ever half marathon. Coincidently I also have the grey and black design!!
Great video indeed! This is suchhhhh a hot topic for those who are just getting into running. It's usually overwhelming & intimidating but this video really helps bring things to perspective.. Well done! ❤️
Really great to see this process. I’ve been working by process of elimination and sending a lot of shoes back...can’t wait to go into a store and get an analysis done. Wish there was a home option with the abilities our phone cameras have now.
Getting a pro analysis of your gate cycle can save you a lot of headaches. When I started running, I spent my first year buying running shoes at a big box store based on how cool they looked... Couldn't figure out why my feet always hurt... LOL!
Great video, Paul. Agree to shop local for advice on running shoes. Probably the most important gear for a runner. I prefer local stores owned/managed by runners because they're less likely to "sell" the latest "trend". We've all been through the pronation shoes, barefoot/minimalist shoes, and now carbon fiber shoes. Things like injury history (mentioned in the video) or stack height and heel to toe drop and their potential for injuries are sometimes not discussed when buying shoes. Example: bought my son Brooks with 10 mm drop and caused shin splints that cost him majority of one cross country season. Keep up the useful content and advice!
I really appreciate your comment! There is so much to think about in the minutia of running shoes and it's nice to call on an expert to help you get it right! Thanks for your support.... your channel is a great resource!
Really great to see the process. When I started I didn’t have a local store with anywhere close to this expertise or resources. Pretty much just chain stores with oftentimes no real knowledge about the products being sold (I remember a sales manager telling me that none of their shoes have “heel drop”, as that’s a specialty feature... haha). So anyway, I did a lot of online research beforehand about foot type, pronation, etc and basically self-recommended a neutral shoe. First pair I got were Saucony ride 8s (only started running in mid-2016), and I’ve stuck with that lineup. There’s now a great specialty running store about an hour away which I’ll probably check out sometime to get the full gait analysis etc done.
That's so funny about "drop"! I love Saucony shoes... They've been upping the game for years now. Sounds like you did a lot a good self reflection to arrive at a good shoe for you. Bit a visit with a running expert will reveal so much more. I still learn so much each time I speak with Jamie and others! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Wow this just tells me I need to go into an actual running shoe store for that foot analysis so i can get properly fitted. This was super in-depth and helpful! Finally caught up all my notifications, should be caught up watching your videos now :). Those soles on the blue on clouds look so cool!
So glad you are enjoying my content. If there's anything you'd like to see, I'm open to suggestions! My first impression of the On shoe brand was that it seemed like a gimmick... But that is an impressive shoe... Light and fast.
Buying new shoes from a good running store is such an important first step in getting started as a runner! Charlotte Running Company is one of the top 50 stores in the country for good reason. The Aetrex machine is amazing. Thanks for your support!
Mixed experiences for me. First running store 20 years ago put me in neutral runners due to my foot impression showing high arches. Loved the neutral shoes. Then went to a Podriast run Shoe Store that used advanced video analysis, who put me in full stability Asics Kayanos. Not only were they extremely heavy and the most expensive running shoes on the market, I was almost permanently injured for the next two years. Switch back to neutral shoes, doubled my weekly mileage, no injuries and set new PBs at all distances. Have since found a much better Specialty Running Store (FootPro in Melbourne, AUS) and they put me in much better shoes. They can see why I was placed in stability shoes, but can also see why some neutral shoes work so much better for me
So glad you found a store that went the extra mile for you! Never be scared to experiment with shoes - if you can afford it! Glad things are looking up!
(2nd comment). While I like Hoka runners (have both the Clifton and the Rincon). I would not recommend them as an only pair of runners for a new runner. The disconnected feel from the ground does NOT help you improve your running technique and can lead to bad habits (and therefore injury). Hokas are great for long runs, recovery runs and runs on hard surfaces. But I would highly recommend other shoes with good 'ground feel' if you want to improve your running
Great advice. I use Hoka Cliftons on easy days, the Rincon is my go-to Long Run shoe. But lighter shoes like the Skechers Razor 3 and Saucony Kinvara are great for speed work and feeling the ground - thus - bettering your technique!
Once you find a shoe - or shoes - that let you do what you want to do, stick with them - just keep your eyes on the latest trends - sometimes magic does happen! Thanks for your continued support Vince - you rule!
Great video. My running shoe store experience was not a good one. I felt that the sales associate was not that interested in really helping me. I left with 2 items to help myself. I have a neutral foot and should buy size 8.5. I video'd myself on my treadmill and I'm a midfoot striker. On my own I found that an 8 works best in most shoes, that my left arch need very slight stability, I need a firm but cushioned shoe. Current best shoe has bean NB beacon, Asics Glideride and now Saucony endorphin shift.
I'm so sad that your local store didn't come through! But I'm also happy that you are motivated enough to assess your own form! All the shoes you mentioned are of interest to me. The Beacon 3 may be my next tempo shoe! Thank you for your support!
Here in the States, a current model year daily trainer usually falls between $110 - $150. Once you've been properly fitted in a running store, you can start shopping last year's models for deeper discounts. RunRepeat.com is a great place to look for deals once you know what kind of shoe works for you.
There are no nationl running specialty stores per se - I recommend you find a local running shop so they can get you properly fitted as in my video. Once you know what works for you, you can shop online for subsequent pairs of shoes.... runningwarehouse.com, leftlanesports.com, roadrunnersports.com etc are great places to search for sales online, but the wrong shoe can make your running experience more dangerous than need be... Where are you located?
Not convinced running up and down a shop really shows you a lot. You're not going to get into your relaxed, natural stride in that distance? 🤔 Also comparing the midfoot carbon plate in a 361 shoe to a full carbon plate of an Alphafly or Endorphin Pro! The plate in the 361 shoe is just for midfoot structure it has nothing to do with propulsion!
I agree on all counts, but that in-person try on does give you the benefit of staff experience and knowledge. The run does give you a general feel for a shoe as well. While you may not know if you're wearing the perfect shoe for you, it definitely eliminates those which DO NOT work for you. BTW - I LOVE the Endorphin Pro - my favorite marathon race shoe ever! Thank you for a thought-provoking post!
@@DevRunner No worries 👍 Glad you're enjoying your Endorphin Pro's. I'm loving the Endorphin Speed's at the moment, it's a great range of shoes! 👌 Keep up the good work 😊
I'm not an expert, A tight lockdown in your midfoot and heel are a good thing, but you definitely don't want running shoes that don't allow your toes to move freely. You ate risking injury there... Not to mention losing toenails! There are other factors like arch support and protection against striking forces when you land each footfall that need to be considered as well...
I just checked the Running Shoe Fitting video settings... It isn't showing as content made for kids so I'm not sure what's blocking your notifications... I'll leave this comment up in case others may know more about this issue! Thanks!
