- Join Fr Patrick in Notting Hill as he discovers a gallery devoted to the art and symbolism of icons.
Fr Patrick of @christianart explores the Temple Gallery in London, one of the foremost galleries in the world dedicated to the ancient tradition of icons. Founded in 1959 by Richard Temple and tucked away on a backstreet in Notting Hill, the gallery houses a remarkable collection of icons and has exhibited pieces believed to date as far back as the 4th century. Richard shares with Fr Patrick his first encounter with icons as a sixteen-year-old, when he purchased an image of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus. He describes how the image seemed to “speak to him,” marking the beginning of a career spanning more than sixty years, devoted to the documentation, research, and acquisition of sacred art.
Special Thanks to The Temple Gallery. www.templegall...
Gracias infinitas por su tarea de amor y difusión del arte. Comienzo cada día abriendo el mail de Cristian Art. Y así, empiezo la jornada con la luz del Evangelio y la belleza del arte.
Thank you so much, I’m only an amateur artist but belong to the Society of Catholic Artists and try to focus my paintings on the Gospel message. I found this video very helpful in resolving a problem I have with a present painting of the Resurrection, and you’ll never know how much your daily Christian Art emails are inspirational. May God bless you .
Beautiful and interesting!
👌🏽❤️✝️
What a great initiative! Definitely subscribed!
A beautiful and humbling experience. Thank you
Thank you so much Father. I learned so much from this.
What a wonderful film and what a wonderful priest! I love his daily emails on art and the gospels.
A story that has stuck with me for years is the one of an old Russian Christian peasant, who was offered a considerable sum of money for the icon in her home by a visiting art dealer. She wanted to know what would happen to the icon. People will come from many places to look at it in our gallery, she was told. No, she wouldn't sell it, she said, because it was not to look at, but to worship with.
Oh my goodness❤️. That was very moving. Thank you for sharing.
Although I understand this lady's wish not to sell, the purpose of an icon is to give a message which requires inner hearing and inner seeing. Any place where an icon is displayed, becomes an area of prayer.
Thank you very much Father Patrick, I learned so much from your comments on the Icons. I was invited to join a group here in Adelaide 2 years ago, and am learning very slowly to trust in God and not my own talents, it is a huge and humbling experience to write an icon but living with the work in glacially slow progress is strangely peaceful and uplifting.
Many thanks for the insights and encouragement you offer, Fr Patrick - a great start to the new year! Jim
Thank you, Father Patrick. I've always been drawn to the icon paintings, they are so beautiful and moving. I have been receiving your daily emails for over a year and am discovering paintings and artist I was unaware of. I have learned so much! Thank you, Father Patrick.
I often have recourse to the website Christian Art, and things have become even better now with these lovely videos. This video is of high production value, and a wonder in the explanations. The mystery of the icons has been opened up to me. Thank you very much for your work. I have done some videos like these myself on Salt and Light TV, but you take them to another level. God bless you.
Padre Patrick le escribo desde Montevideo, Uruguay todas las mañanas leo su evangelio y admiro el arte que acerca, porque pinto al óleo, le mando un abrazo lleno de bendiciones!
Thank you Fr Patrick! I really like the way you explain to us followers Christian art, love the video!
Very interesting information! Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you, Father Patrick for that informative and very delightful video. I love Sacred Art, and this presentation on Icons was wonderful! I am thankful for your appreciation of Sacred Art, and linking it with Scripture. God Bless you and your ministry!
I am so happy to see this, Father! I have been on your email list since the beginning and have enjoyed each and every reflection and artwork that you have shared.
This is a fascinating explanation about icons, which many Christians unfortunately call "idols," due to their ignorance. However, both of you beautifully taught us the use of icons in the early Church, the Orthodox church, and for our meditation today. Thank you so very much!
Fr,Patrick, ThankYou ! You are a reliable asset with helping me understand sacred art!
Gracias Padre Patrick me fascina el arte iconográfico. Que hermosa galería!!!. Gracias
What an unexpected and insightful video. Many thanks to you both.
Wonderful. I've followed the gallery and its publications for years (though I've never had the money to buy myself an icon). Nice to hear Mr. Temple speak.
Thankyou so much Father Patrick. This video is just wonderful.
Thank you Fr Patrick, this was so beautiful, would love more about Icons any time you can! God bless you and all you do.
Wonderful video! Wonderful art 👍
The hist about the mandorla as the geometric interconection of two spheres is brilliant. As usual, also. God Bless you Father.
Thank you Father and Richard, I really needed the brief experience of timelessness which I found in the video,
bless you both,
Karen

I always learn something from Fr . Patrick thank you so much for these films and your daily reflections.
An interesting aspect of iconography that I learned from this lovely video today..the figure represented in the icon is PRESENT! This explains the
intensity of reverence that I feel when viewing them. I stare fixatedly. This is so wonderful. Thank you for this video today 💜
Such a great explanation of icons
Great!! Thank you so much! That's really fascinating!!
Muchas gracias.

It’s a revelation to me to understand that icons are purposefully stylized and abstract- as opposed to being poor realistic renditions, i.e. like early Egyptian art. Thank you.
This is so interesting
¡Qué Dios le bendiga!
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
This video just popped up in my feed. Thank you! I love icons, and I did indeed learn something -- about the mandorla. I have liked and subscribed.
Love it

I am hooked!
“They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:”
El Espíritu Santo está en los iconos, que Dios te bendiga.

Looking for a beautiful art work which symbolises the dignity of the human person (apart from Michael Angelo''s Creation of Adam) for my Confirmation candidates. Any ideas?
I lived in Notting Hill in the late 70s. I wish I'd known this wonderful gallery was there at that time.
Dear Father Patrick thank you so much for your 'channel's, and all your thoughtful insights. May I just suggest that you might consider not putting the 'music' background on? For me, at least, it adds nothing and is a distraction from your wisdom. I don't intend to be ungrateful or negative, as I truly appreciate your ministry in this work of expounding Christian art!
I don't agree. The music adds a necessary dimension to the fact that we can't contemplate the "moving pictures" of this TH-cam Video alone. We don't have the privilege of experiencing the intimacy of the icons because we are limited by this media. The music therefore enhances our experience to make up for what is essentially a digital display of the icons which are not meant for an "online experience". The music gives us one. Thank you Fr Patrick for your excellent production.
@@IRELAND_MY_LOVEtotally agree
You can turn off the sound and read captions if they are enabled. Just a thought.
Could the music at least be at a significantly lower level than Father Patrick’s voice, which I do want to hear?
The Triptych is not the Three Holy Hierarchs, Gregory, Chrysostom and Basil.
This particular triptych depicts, from the left, the Saints Nicholas of Myra, Gregory the Theologian and Basil the Great.
In this era in style of iconography, St John Chrysostom would be portrayed wearing the imperial sakkos. His beard who would be dark, short and pointed.
Icons of the Three Holy hierarchs do exist but they would be portrayed a standing up one next to the other with Saint John Chrysostom in the middle.

Wonderful video. Been with you since the start Fr. Patrick and love this video and your art ministry.
As Catholics are we allowed to pray with icons?
@@brendanegan4859 Yes we are allowed to indeed. These icons are true windows to the divine, so they certainly can help with prayer.
All my best,
Fr Patrick
