The lead singer has that type of voice you either love or hate. I personally love it. His voice sounds like he's almost about to yell/scream his lyrics but instead ends up with a very unique sound.
I really like his voice and the way it cracks sometimes. However, I wish he could hold notes a little better. His voice has great character, and if he could match it with a little better pitch control, he'd be great.
This band is so incredible because it perfectly fits for any kind of mood. You can be crying, drunk alone at home and throw it on, but also when you're happy, it somewhat reminds you of like summer memories at the lake even if the lyrics have nothing to do with summer memories at the lake. It's perfect road tripping music because it's a great mix between lively enough to pump you up, but mellow enough to keep you chill and somber
You hit the nail on the head. I don't listen to music often because i don't like to feel emotional all the time. But i can put the Front Bottoms and it'll always fit the mood i'm in. Can be for any scenario and i love that.
My friend Shaun showed me this band just a little before he disappeared. I haven't heard from him in something like 2 years, none of our friend group has. He was a great dude. A punk with a heart that kept him engaged with making the world better. A really good friend. I still love this band, and I still think of him when I hear it. I hope he's out there somewhere, and I hope he's okay.
Jesus this is so good. Every couple of weeks or so on some random Friday after a long day at work and home and after the wife and kids have finally gone to bed, I'll have a few beers stay up late and surf around TH-cam, and for some reason I always find myself back here. It's 3 a.m. my kids will be up in about three hours raring to go and yet here I am again watching this through for the hundredth time. I love this!
When I was 13, my sister showed this band to me when she would drive me around back in 2014. In 2015 I started a band and we pretty much strictly played tfb covers. This was the soundtrack to my high school years through new friends, new experiences, new love. I’ve seen them live every time they came to Cleveland. I’m 20 now, and these songs mean just as much to me it’s crazy. I don’t know what I have to say really, maybe just thanks.
man i am on this video reminiscing right now and i relate so much. was just shedding some happy tears to this and thinking about the fact that these guys have been my favourite band (and most life-changing band for me) for almost 8 years now
This band helped me cope with my sister being murdered by her boyfriend, three years ago tomorrow, so for that I owe them my deepest gratitude. Some songs, or certain lines, just tug at your heartstrings. Makes me feel a little less alone and able to go on a little bit better with my life. One step at a time, sometimes a couple steps back in between, but just keep pushing.
I think people tend to forget that music doesn't always have to sound "perfect" or "expertly crafted". Sometimes it's just the message each song is trying to convey. Everyone sends their message differently.
It's passion that matter most to me, I sound like shit, my voice cracks, gets raspy, and I generally have a bad voice, I can't play a guitar so I made a one string out of a plank of wood, but I love singing and playing, so I'll continue even if it leads to me living on the streets because who the hell would pay for my music.
Hate how much this band still has a tug on my heart. I listen to them and immediately get brought back to the boy who had my heart many summers in a row.
My sophomore year in college is when Talon came out. I lived in a dorm that only had twin sized mattresses. I’m 6’4”. Hard to describe how hard the song twin size mattress hit me back then. That song will forever hold such a precious nostalgic place in my heart.

they are so pure. brian was so sweet. he got really drunk on stage and was adorable. he took off his shoes right when he got on stage. the whole concert was emotionally and physically amazing.
Twin size mattress always gives me goosebumps, reminds me of summer 16’ with my friends just messing around downtown, walking, being goofy, having a crush, holding their hand, that first kiss.

I'm glad this band was my entire life ages 15-17, I look back at those years as an endless summer now because of it. Brian's lyrics have a way of being universally relatable while simultaneously being impossibly specific, which makes it all feel like real life and almost something I've actively taken part in. Probably one of the most divisive bands in modern music. You either adore them or despise them.. That's what makes them great. They lack technical skill but they're fantastic in their own way.
one of my favourite groups of all time probably just for the fact they feel like a friend. the emotional support from this music is really something else. speaks to a drifting generation so perfectly
These guys are so incredibly good. They have spun a couple genres and sounds together and made something that didn't exist but sounds so familiar and amazing.
This band has been my biggest cope from being molested. Their music makes me feel like I’m gonna be okay. That I’m not dirty. It... they are really important
There is a lot of arguing going on here, wow. For me, part of the charm of this band is Brian's voice, because even though he's not technically a good singer (and in pretty much any other context his voice would annoy the crap out of me), you can hear the passion in his voice and just the raw emotion, and I've always valued emotion over technical skill. Also, they really do have great, if simple, instrumentation, I just don't think you really see that in this video due to the very stripped down nature of this performance. And hey, if you don't like the Front Bottoms, you don't like the Front Bottoms. It's like coffee; you are either obsessed with them, or you can't stand them.
I totally agree it's just how real they are and the idea of what they are doing and that they are doing it without any shits given and I don't think that made sense but when they play I just "find so much truth" in it and it's just quite averagely beautiful
the music is in the way it's sung. Just because american idol/the voice tells people what good singers sound like?? beauty is in the eye of the beholder my friend and this is amazing music.
This is where I first found this band. After almost 12 years, I'm finally getting to see them and one of my new favorite bands (Hey, Nothing) in Atlanta. I'm so excited
this band literally is my comfort music. i have such a crush on brian sella thank u for being a midwest emo god. saw them in concert 4 years ago, dying to see them again
My friends who I’ve introduced to The Front Bottoms can’t get over his voice, but personally I love it. His voice doesn’t have to be pretty, it gives you feelings. It’s so beautiful.
My favorite band for almost 10 years now. They just don't have any bad music. And they're just as good live! I recommend them to everyone, and people seem to either love or hate them
they are amazing! glad to see somebody getting into them. i had the same issue. i loved one of their songs and didnt get into them much at first, but the more i listened, and the more i saw how passionate and friendly and personal they are, i fell in love.
For real, I just saw them last night as the openers for Say Anything and honestly, they put on a way better show and everyone loved them. They totally stole the show. They played more of their shorter songs to use the best time in their 45 min set. They have so much fun when they're playing it's hard not to love them and have fun with them.
Have been going to live shows for 25 years, saw the front bottoms a few months ago... top 5 shows, ever. amazing energy, lyrics and pure love of the written word. thank you npr for the intro a while back. support live music folks. and self sufficient bands!
I don't get why people feel the need to shit on other people's music taste. I'm watching this because I really love this band, and yeah, Brian Sella might not be the best vocalist, but it's the style of the music and he's very passionate about this. If you don't like something, you don't have to watch it or comment on it. Nobody is making you watch this so keep your shitty comments to yourself.
It's Nov 03, 2023 and The Front Bottoms are playing live right now at the St Augustine Amphitheatre (The Amp). I can hear it pretty clear from my house and I wish I got tix. Saw them coming into town in their tour bus. This is a band to watch! Brian Sella has a voice for longevity and is distinct and notable. I can hear it cutting through the wind rn. Nice Zoomers!- I'd pat them on their heads. Hope everyone had a great Halloween and best wishes!! - from paradise, On An Island, in Florida USA ❤️
theres just something about this kind of music that speaks to my soul, discovered The Front Bottoms very recently but ive quickly fallen in love with them!
I would drive an hour to work everyday miserable, and I would listened to these songs on the way. Get this! I would actually laugh in the car, at the same part even though I knew what was coming. I hope one day I can see them live. These song tell a story in a way, maybe they tell a feeling.
I showed my aunt Au Revoir and its now her favorite song, she is 54 and rocks out to this song with me likes she 21 it’s amazing. She loves this song and The Front bottoms
probably the best and hardest summer of my life was spent listening intermittently to talon of the hawk. these guys grew up, but the sense of being 19 and some kind of miserable never leaves you.
I use to mock my buds for liking this band. Living in NJ everyone knows them because they are from a town nearby, as every time I was hanging with them I tried to mimic the lead singers voice. After some time I admit they grew on me so much so I saw them live. Almost saw them twice but pandemic hit two months before their concert in NYC. They are getting bigger since the venue was Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan a upgrade to Brooklyn steel venue.
I have the front bottoms lyrics scribbled all over my therapy book. They've been such a fundamental part of my recovery and I just love this band so much.
This is the greatest thing I’ve heard all year. I’m definitely getting into this band. Thank you Tiny Desk for introducing me to fucking beautiful music. Thank you for performing this set. Thank you all for everything. Never give up on anything anybody.
my older sister used to love this band, and when she liked them i found a few songs and liked those a lot. every few months, i go through another phase of liking them whenever i want to be like her. i also used to have an internet friend who loved them and listening to their music just reminds me of better times.
This is so great. The entire time I was watching I had a huge grin on my face - that's what their music has always done for me and their fans, I think. They sound just a great live as they do on their recorded tracks. Cant wait for them to come back to Canada :)
Ive know this band for over 12 years and i dont think ill ever stop loving them this will always be my top favorite video ive watched it easily 300 times 😭
over a decade ago i was getting high in a parking lot with my girlfriend, surfing youtube and i came across this song because the album was called talon of the hawk and thought that sounded badass. i clicked it, and my whole life changed
I love the Front Bottoms! They remind me of when I was living in the Catskills driving on dark back roads listening to Maps and Flashlight and just loving this guy's unpretentious voice and the words he was saying. Thanks for showcasing them!
just gotta say, that is the most tambourine i've ever heard in a group of 4 songs, but it works so well, props tot he percussion player for killing it and doing so much with so little

always with the haters, damn. It's folk punk did you really expect complex chord structure and great vocals??? you like it or you don't. I don't get why people look up music they hate
Markus Barrett Personally I don't have a problem with the criticism. I'm not gonna get on someone for saying something bad about a band I love when I'll go and do the same with an artist I don't like. We all have opinions, and if you share them in way structured way that actually explains why you don't like them then at least you've given reason to dislike a band.
Nick could sing just like this. He loved you guys. He took his life 12.21 21. Miss him and his ways. I laugh sometimes because he would force your songs on me and sing them in my face. I understand it now. I love you guys too. Love, his father.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope this music that means so much to him and hundreds of others help you feel a connection to your son. good luck and try to stay strong, for you and your son.
I found this video in early 2014 and I’ve just been absolutely hypnotized by these boys ever since. I mean every word, in every song, on every album just hits so close to home, It’s always felt like a group of misunderstood people who inexplicably seem to understand me.

They have Tiny desk as both an audio and video podcast now
Probably one of the most divisive bands in modern music. You either adore them or despise them.. That's what makes them great. They lack technical skill but they're fantastic in their own way.
SepulchrMC ayy coheed
Ayyyyy
SepulchrMC yeah me and my dad love them but my mom fucking hates them. I love annoying my mom by playing them 😂
lack of technical skill???
@@mauriciomartinho3359 There’s nothing particularly technical about them, they just happen to be really good songwriters
TFB are still killing it eight years later ❤️ Their show in Minneapolis this week was amazing and they had their own hard seltzer ‘Plastic Flowers’
So good, am I the only one yelling along on Twin size mattress?
This must be my 50th time watching this. - Shout out in 2022
I stay coming back to this! Can’t wait to see them 10/20
one of my favourite groups of all time probably just for the fact they feel like a friend. the emotional support from this music is really something else. speaks to a drifting generation so perfectly
These guys are so incredibly good. They have spun a couple genres and sounds together and made something that didn't exist but sounds so familiar and amazing.
Lmao, no offense, I like these guys, but tbh it's just a few guys with guitars. Nothing new in my humble opinion. All the songs sound the same
asuicidemachine pixies, violent femmes, pavement. just to name a few. off the top of my head. not to detract from it.
asuicidemachine its called indie rock and its been around for a while buddie
Lot of mewithoutyou vocal influence
This band has been my biggest cope from being molested. Their music makes me feel like I’m gonna be okay. That I’m not dirty. It... they are really important
They can violate your body but never your soul. Stay strong brother/sister.
Stay strong
why post this on the internet for anyone to see?
Lake McNatt because there's no shame in being a victim of someone else's monstrosity?
Stay strong!
Great band. "Flashlight" and "Father" are two of my favorite by them.
Revisiting this video for the hundredth time because quarantine has me missing their concerts :(
If you would like to show a friend who The Front Bottoms are, these 15 minutes will sum up how incredible these musicians truly are.
Only the front bottoms can make a recorder dope
I could NOT imagine my life without the frontbottoms. Thank you Brian for all the great songs, I find meaning in every word.
This is amazing, is anyone else listening on 2020?
The Gipster Seeing then in concert soon! Hopefully recent events don’t squander that experience
Been listening to them since 2018, I don't think I'll ever stop loving them
yezzirrrrr
No
Been listening to them for 6 or 7 years and still listening in 2020
There is a lot of arguing going on here, wow. It's like coffee; you are either obsessed with them, or you can't stand them.
me too oh goodness this comment
Well said. I like them because they are honest and unashamed. Technical skill is overrated.
This is my first taste of them and I'm in love. I completely agree about his voice, you can definitely feel the emotion in his words.
BRIAN LAUGHING AT THE END OF AU REVIOR NOOO
Shows how chill they are and that they dont have to be professional about music instead they just do it for fun! They do that most of their concerts!!
Brian's voice is easily my favorite voice to hear sing "I'm sad" a bunch
This is where I first found this band. After almost 12 years, I'm finally getting to see them and one of my new favorite bands (Hey, Nothing) in Atlanta. I'm so excited
How was it?
i saw them last week in FL they were awesome
Saw them in dallas a few weeks ago and it was amazing
this is my college music band and will forever be one of my favorites
this band literally is my comfort music. i have such a crush on brian sella thank u for being a midwest emo god. saw them in concert 4 years ago, dying to see them again
its so cathartic to see them live, being just one of many crying as i shout the lyrics to twin sized mattress at the top of my voice.
I recommend them to everyone, and people seem to either love or hate them
Find myself coming back thinking im gunna listening to the whole thing but eventually skipping to twin sized mattress to listen to 13 times.
You’re missing out, this whole performance is Golden
Didn't quite like them at first. Saw them a couple weeks ago as support for Say Anything and loved them. They won me over!
they are amazing! glad to see somebody getting into them. i had the same issue. i loved one of their songs and didnt get into them much at first, but the more i listened, and the more i saw how passionate and friendly and personal they are, i fell in love.
For real, I just saw them last night as the openers for Say Anything and honestly, they put on a way better show and everyone loved them. They totally stole the show. They played more of their shorter songs to use the best time in their 45 min set. They have so much fun when they're playing it's hard not to love them and have fun with them.
I’m going through one of the hardest things in my life and god these songs are really helping me through it.
caitlyn i hope you are okay 💞💞
@@stupidhorse69 Im doing a lot better, thank you.
This is surprisingly wonderful. I never really gave The Front Bottoms a chance. Absolutely love this.
I'm seriously so in love with Brian, it's ridiculous.
Have been going to live shows for 25 years, saw the front bottoms a few months ago... top 5 shows, ever. amazing energy, lyrics and pure love of the written word. thank you npr for the intro a while back. support live music folks. and self sufficient bands!
Mat's recorder jam is the highlight
I just saw them 3 hours away it was totally worth it just buy the tickets and go you wont regret it
I showed my aunt Au Revoir and its now her favorite song, she is 54 and rocks out to this song with me likes she 21 it’s amazing. She loves this song and The Front bottoms
i was born to love the front bottoms
probably the best and hardest summer of my life was spent listening intermittently to talon of the hawk. these guys grew up, but the sense of being 19 and some kind of miserable never leaves you.
i’ve watched this vid a million times and i will never stop i love so much
I listen to this so often that the algorithm knows I want it every 3 days or so. Never not gonna click it.
They are getting bigger since the venue was Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan a upgrade to Brooklyn steel venue.
that guy looks like brian sella from the front bottoms
Christ man. Haven’t listened to these guys since high school. Can’t even describe the emotions listening to this brings up.
Never give up on anything anybody.
all their songs are pretty much the same and they are all pretty much great i would collect all their records i have them all
Ciaran is sooo talented. Really great at guitar and the trumpet!
my older sister used to love this band, and when she liked them i found a few songs and liked those a lot. every few months, i go through another phase of liking them whenever i want to be like her. i also used to have an internet friend who loved them and listening to their music just reminds me of better times.
I love this acoustic performance of them! And I can play the trumpet too!
i can’t believe i’ve never watched this now i’m crying and reminiscing on the handful of times i’ve seen them
If you think music has to be complex for you to enjoy it, I feel sorry for you.
I agree! The music that has touched me the most has been the simplest.
EarnWerb I love complex music just as much as I love simple stuff.
Just depends on my mood XD
The classic strawman offered up by the fans of talentless pretentious "muscians." Simplicity isn't the issue. Talent is the issue.
Gibson1961SG theyre talented songwriters and musicians
Brianna Slaton Half of Hollywood IS famous -_-
This is so perfect still to this day. It should have millions of likes smh
I can't stop smiling. TFB helped me channel my teen angst into angry singing at 14 lol. So glad to see them here.
over a decade ago i was getting high in a parking lot with my girlfriend, surfing youtube and i came across this song because the album was called talon of the hawk and thought that sounded badass. i clicked it, and my whole life changed
Always mention Mathew Uychich, dude! It's Brian AND Mat. Mat never gets any recognition.
and also mat is pretty cute and seems a pretty nice guy
Brian deserves all the love in the world
I love the Front Bottoms! They remind me of when I was living in the Catskills driving on dark back roads listening to Maps and Flashlight and just loving this guy's unpretentious voice and the words he was saying. Thanks for showcasing them!
just gotta say, that is the most tambourine i've ever heard in a group of 4 songs, but it works so well, props tot he percussion player for killing it and doing so much with so little
Please invite AJJ to perform on Tiny Desk. Please.
YESSSSS
+O Sanga Definitely should do this
yes
+O Sanga been waiting for that to happen for years!!
FUCKING PLEASE, IT WOULD BE SO GOOD!
my backyard, all my loved ones around. Most are gone now. Thank you. revisiting this years later, Love to you all reading this, hold on a little tighter to those hugs.
"She hopes I'm cursed forever to sleep on a twin sized mattress in somebody's attic or basement my whole life."
This hits a little too deep for reasons I can't discern.
always with the haters, damn. It's folk punk did you really expect complex chord structure and great vocals??? you like it or you don't. I don't get why people look up music they hate
Tony Bones exactly! I say the same thing when people say that about AJJ. everyone is fucking critic now a days
Lol right?!?! It's fucking punk music. It can be whatever the fuck it wants. You don't have to like it. But if you do, you get it.
This was so long ago. I just saw them live a few months ago and they sound even better nowadays. Last song on the set was Au Revoir
this is definitely one of my top tiny desks but when the recorder is whipped out i lose it every time HFJSNS
Holy shit i wear my heart on my sleeve. This acoustic version of twin size mattress is so beautiful. Its just so real.
Just coming back home to make sure that everything is okay with the world
I can't get enough of this. This 15 min set has had an impact on my life.
I found this video in early 2014 and I’ve just been absolutely hypnotized by these boys ever since. I mean every word, in every song, on every album just hits so close to home, It’s always felt like a group of misunderstood people who inexplicably seem to understand me.
Been listening to TFB for 10 years atp and im seeing them live for the 2nd time THIS FRIDAY. This is one of my favorite NPR Tiny Desks
