Pinegrove: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bob Boilen | December 2, 2016 - There's a confessional quality to the songs of Pinegrove that feels reassuring. The problems that swirl around Evan Stephens Hall's head feel universal, so it's comforting in "Old Friends" when he sings, "I should call my parents when I think of them / I should tell my friends when I love them."
The New Jersey group's sound feels fresh and scrappy at the same time. Hall and drummer Zack Levine, who've been friends since they were 7, form the core of Pinegrove. (Their dads play music together, too.) Together, the band squeezed four songs into their 13-minute Tiny Desk concert, with Hall's voice - and a spirit of warmheartedness and friendship - at the center of it all.

Nothing like race-obsessed propaganda in the morning!
evan (the singer) is doing a solo mini tour right now, and he did a show in my town in some random dude's living room and when we walked in he was just sitting criss cross applesauce on the floor and he greeted us with a big smile and a handshake and was just an absolute sweetheart. he made sure to talk to every single person that walked through that door and try to make a personal connection with all of them. his set is even better in person and he's just such a down to earth guy. i'm so glad someone like him exists
Brianna Rissi awww lucky you :)
So fortunate, I’d love to see them live but not many people come to many places in southern Indiana to perform.
And a couple things are for sure in southern Indiana. There's a lot of corn and we really love good live music.
not exactly close but they will be in Saint Louis in March...
he's so culty
Woah. That lyric "I saw Leah on the bus a few months ago, saw some old freinds at her funeral" man..
Maybe I'm just high or whatever but I started crying like twenty seconds in
I’m holding my newborn daughter in my arms watching this, and the same thing happened to me
Yeah man me too. You feel it
You passed the humanity test
same ♡
Lol were you unsure of your level of sobriety?
this made me call my parents to tell them I love em
this is mixed scrumptiously props to the sound engineer
adam srikantha tiny desks always are. Not an easy situation to mix for either, the fact that they're trying to get a real organic sound while using as few mics as possible in that room they're in which doesn't look to be some acoustic masterpiece of a space.... Credit to the people that book for that too though, most acts that come thru know how to play to the situation so well. Out of all the stripped down performance shows out there, audiotree, 97x, triple j, etc etc, tiny desk is the undisputed best.
@@esp1344 i've heard from some people that this set is actually one of many NPR soundstages in a huge soundstage
It's always on point, major props to the engineer.
seriously better than any of the bands original recordings! i always come back to this version
2:24 acoustic angelina is a blessing we should all recognize
They already did a live acoustic take with only guitar for "This has got to stop"
omfg.. you're right
Whoever ran the sound/mix for this session is a beast. It's pristine. Even if the acoustics of that small area are naturally nice, they are still a hero. The band always sounds good but I've never heard them sound THIS good.
Yesssss
I feel this same way. This was actually my first exposure to them, but everything else I watch can't compare to the sound quality of this. Wish they did Aphasia though, haha!
DIVINE
Its always incredible on tiny desks
@@fredi7565 100% it's great too...saw these guys live last month for the first time...blown away...
i just keep playing old friends over and over again. it crushes me. i had a friend who looked like the lead singer, like, strangely similar, and about a year ago he killed himself. he was in the military, we played high school football together, and were generally close during that time, but life has a way of creating distance between people, even those you love dearly. it's just that idea, and that line about seeing an old friend, and attending their funeral not that long after seeing them, and how we should tell our friends and parents that we love them. fuck man, it just makes me feel so human i guess
I feel ya man. About a year ago, my first girlfriend died in a car wreck and every time he sings "I saw Leah on the bus a few months ago, saw some old friends at her funeral" it makes me think of her and growing up with her. Really plucks some strings at your heart, you know.
I completely understand this.. I actually listened to Old Friends over and over again after my friend died of an accidental overdose.. I feel guilty about always being in my own world and not making more of an effort to connect with her in recent times, along with others that have made an impact in my life. And the thing about seeing Leah on the bus a few months ago.. saw some old friends at her funeral ..reminds me of seeing old friends from college at her funeral and it tears me apart.
i should call my parents when i think of them..tell my friends when I love them. Sorry for your loss.
So sorry for your loss, hope you are doing well these days ❤️
“It just makes me feel so human” actually just made me cry. Gosh. Like as humans we’re both helpless and empowered.
Life is scary and fleeting, but beautiful simultaneously. I’m sorry for your loss.
i’m so in love w shorty on the keys
00:00 - Need
02:24 - Angelina
04:03 - Old Friends
08:02 - Waveform

I had 4:03 memorized already, but thank you ;)
who else just came for 4:03?
Matthew Hanson a lot more to them than just that song
@@jpw5820 there is no such think as objective with music
this band has dominated my 2016.

Jason Cox I feel you. Couldn't go more than a day or two without 1 track from Cardinal

Jason Cox Yes Sir, everyday.
and 2017
Old Friends is wild, that lead acoustic player is otherworldly. Shockingly incredible stuff.
Three things,
The tempo changes are just fantastic and always spot on
Backing signing has the best harmonies ever
Evan never gets a single note out of tune
What a bloody band
If you love harmonies, check out shovels and rope- lay low.... live at pickathon 2012
This is the best pinegrove has ever sounded. I’d even go as far as to say this is everything music should be. This whole tiny desk, 10/10.
100% agree. i’m glad i’m not alone. the audio mixing to the instrument tuning and the vocalizing to the perfect rhythm everything is absolutely flawless
It’s perfect. Everything. They are 100% in sink
@@camrongray3406i think u mean in sync but yes i agree
@@brickyy3106😂
This is a beautiful stripped down pinegrove vibe but if you want the full gut punch go to their audiotree live and specifically watched recycling. That is the most synergy a band will ever have. Even the mistakes in that audiotree session feel intentional.
They sound incredible as fuck.
If you like this, try Andy Shauf
"I saw Leah on the bus a few months ago
I saw some old friends at her funeral"
personal rule: _watch the whole thing instead of skipping to Old Friends_
hahahah
i feel CALLED OUT
hahaha literally did that.. then read this... now feel bad.
Funny I actually only skipped old friends. The other three songs are way better
Waveform might be my favorite song by Pinegrove
I only found Pinegrove recently but they're already my absolute favourite artist at the moment. Been listening to every album on repeat for weeks now. This performance is so gorgeous. Evan's voice is so emotional and powerful. This is the sort of music I'd love to be making.
pinegrove is amazing, and even better live or in studio sessions
Dude me too. I found them a few months back. So obsessed !
Just saw them live last night. They’re beautiful.
yo this is probably the best Tiny Desk Concert
Jacob Phelps listen to the Anderson paak one
pwr bttm’s set was 10/10
All three are great. You guys should check out
Son little tiny desk
Tank and the Bangas from New Orleans, probably my favorite
St. Paul and the Broken Bones
Annnnd THIS is why I watch Tiny Desk concerts
Can't get enough of that Waveform
The harmonies in Need are amazing
this version of old friends is supreme
Val Brown honestly it's the best live version of the song.
i think their live version for World Cafe is the best, link: /watch?v=oKFn-xbA_g8
totally agree, the World Cafe one is SO good!
Dont like it at all tbh
ELITE
I root for these guys like they're my friends. So excited for them to be on here.
Can't even explain how this tiny desk makes me feel. Im glad to be alive with you all!
God, this is so painfully beautiful
The Banjo not getting credit cause it was to damn good
Sam Skinner (the banjo player) killin it in this set. Skinner's been a core member for a while
Flatpicking a 5-string :/
Adds so much.
@@ItsOverFatKidall the banjo players liked this message lol
@@AddisonJamesHoward thank u
Saw Pinegrove live for my birthday in Feb 2020 just before the world shut down, it was absolutely incredible.
Can't get enough of that pedal steel and Evan's voice... plus they were registering people to vote at the show.
Pinegrove unplugged is just folk music, which is honestly most of the reason I gave the band a chance. This was my first exposure to them. Now, I’m in the middle of a big Pinegrove binge.
It’s interesting to see my internalized music biases working in real-time. I’m a big folk music guy, and I probably wouldn’t have given Pinegrove a first chance if they’d been all electrified. But now, I love the fuzz guitars. If I wasn’t so strict about the kind of music I let in, I’d probably like a lot more bands than I do.
the best music is music that tells a story, and at its core it's called folk rock. pinegrove is the perfect embodiment of it.
They sort of mix midwest emo and folk music together which works surprisingly well and is one of the reasons the songs work so well electric and acoustic
beautiful realization to have!
Real.
This band makes me want to cry, they're so great
gooooood grief !! the harmonies y'all THE HARMONIES
I even can't count how many times I've watched this.
Years later and I’m still coming back
Everyone in this band is so "in" it. You can tell they all love the music that they're playing.
It's been like 5 years since I watched this and I've followed Pinegrove ever since. I think they've developed and Megan has really brought something with her unique bass playing. Amperland NY is fantastic. But i do miss Nandi.
Nandi brought more than keyboards and backing vocals, she brought some kind of magic to the band, some kind of chemistry.
I will watch this again.
I just discovered this band and it saddens me that I could have been listening to them for three years already.
No point in regretting
It's crazy how talented they each are individually. What a lovely combination of people and honestly what I believe to be a unique sound.
I love watching how emotionally they’re all connected to these songs. Even the banjo-ist looks like he’s feeling every feeling he’s ever felt while plucking the banjo. It really tugs at my heartstrings and I love it so much. It’s rare for a band to continually exude their connection to the music like this, as well as be able to convey it during multiple live performances.
Discovered this band thanks to Tiny Desk, listened to their entire discography and am now back here waiting for their next album to come out. SO GOOD.
So happy Pinegrove did a Tiny Desk concert so that new people can hear about them. They're like a best kept secret and Im so glad they're getting more exposure.
It's such a great way for this band to make new friends, and their old friends must be so proud
@@oliverwest7780 ahhh you sneaky youuu
Honestly so happy for them getting the recognition they deserve now through that TikTok trend
I was patiently waiting for this. This fucking band gives me goosebumps...
Also fellow UK fans, they just announced a tour over here... honestly quite emotional right now...
Seriously. The band, or someone in the band, posted an image of the performance space probably two months before this was released. I was getting impatient, lol.
Nandi’s harmonies are so fire👌🏼
Having never heard this band before this video, there was a gut punch in Old Friends pretty much right at "I should call my parents when I think of them / I should tell my friends when I love them." It felt so heartwrenching and real, like I just walked into a personal moment I wasn't supposed to. That combo of beautiful music and sorrowful lyrics is pretty powerful.
Josh Marre is probably the most underrated slide player in the industry. His stuff is always so perfectly placed. Never flashy, but just adds so much texture and pushes the song in the right ways. Actual slide inspiration for me.
If you're reading this, thank you dude. Your slide solo in Need 2 on Audiotree literally made me buy a slide and now it's one of my main tools and I'm getting people hitting me up to play slide on stuff.
Blue Ranger, FTW!
Really wish he sang "Like it's the old days" up the octave in Angelina on the album version like he does live, it hits so hard.
Check out the new version on Skylight ;)
@@FoggyInc it makes me very happy when i see selfless acts like this, also the audiotree version is amazing if you havnt seen it :)
I love that variation. As well as the one in the acoustic version
it gives me CHILLS
It sounds totally out of place to me, oh well.
Each song sounds so refreshing and beautiful as well as somewhat nostalgic.
the nostalgic part is so true. it's so strange though because I haven't listened to them before
I’m personally moved, the nostalgia hits and it’s so weird because i don’t know why. It’s eating me up from inside. I wanna go back t these times bust these times never existed. Help me out please. Explain
In a perfect world people feel perfectly comfortable drifting from their usual cliques at concerts. The few I bother going out to are the ones I'm real passionate about and just by coming out you're already my friend, Pinegrove is one of those bands.
craig cyr im going to one of their shows in a week and I am so, so excited
I love how they don’t try and present an image they are just being themselves
I have to believe that this is one of the best tiny desk concerts these people have ever seen
Such a phenomenal sound. My favorite band right now, EASY. His smile melts heart
the most beautiful performance of these songs; how am i supposed to listen to the album versions ever again?! love for pinegrove and the brilliant evan
i wish they could/would put this concert on spotify as an album
I am from the Woodstock generation and these kids are phenomenal.
Pinegrove is one of my favorite bands of all time. I had the opportunity to work and hang out with Evan at a summer camp in Colorado, before he became big with Pinegrove. He's a great guy, and a very talented musician. His personality is contagious and I just remember wanting to be just like him! I'll be going to my first show in San Diego in February, can't wait to hear them play some songs from the new album.
Glad I clicked on this. I'm such a sucker for three-part harmonies.
This band is life right now. The lead singer is so incredibly talented.
This version of Need is special. Didn't love that song til I heard it here
Same
Same!

bruh imagine not loving need's original sound. u should try listening to the wnyu version
The sound engineer is phenomenal at Tiny Desk
"I remember everything" .. God damn, such a subtle line.
It's about time. I love Pinegrove. Thanks NPR.
Just discovered them. Better late than never I guess. Made my night!
idk why this comment got me :’) this performance was my first exposure to them a couple years and i still come back it. nothing hits quite like it
Those last harmonies literally brought tears to my eyes. Please please come back!
New album is out
I can't stop listening to this. I wish the singer knew how much his music has impacted my life

"Old Friends" 4:04

Moving from the CBS morning performance to this NPR Tiny Desk one - it's night and day. So proud of this band (and the quality mixing they deserve)
whenthedrumskickin watch the audiotree session if you havent, it gets even better
Nandi's backing vocals are literal perfection. She NEEDS to be a permanent part of the band.
I love her
She probably quit completely because of all the controversy
@@erinmerry5305 She had her own project., album, and tour. Like most everyone else she knows the controversy was nonsense, and still sings with the band.
She has a solo project called Half Waif that is amazing, and she had her own Tiny Desk I believe
Erica Vermette I’ve tried listening to her solo stuff and I just can’t get into it :(
not a single damn note out of its damn place.
Technically there is since he used different notes when singing lol.
Whirrlinq wat
Comparing his recorded songs to the live performance, he is using different notes. I was just being a smartass.
See 5:24 bass almost messes up?
@@norri1am that rundown is intentional I think, ending a 1/4 or so later than expected on the snare instead of base, which makes it amazing
My favorite band for years and years and years to come
I cry every time I watch this
I cannot stop listening to the 1st song. So much emotion.
This is my favorite tiny desk
When the keyboard player sings backing vocals, it sounds like a 10 part harmony....amazing.
in old friends when the shot backs to them all bobbing to the beat, it makes my heart happy. i started listen to them two years ago and i know now this band will forever have a special place in my heart.
i need to watch this at least once a week to stay sane 🤝
this is my favorite version of waveform ever and whenever i need to centralize my thoughts i listen to it
Beautiful happenstance.
A moment in time that fortunately gave us roughly 12 years of desperately deep and necessary internal dialogue template.
I’ll always love you PG
listen to this basically everyday :')
Man, these guys blow me away. Just discovered them yesterday, and they're the first band I've been excited about in 2017.
Patrick Pugh same
Can't overlook the young man playing the Ovation... tremendous guitar work.
At this very moment I’ve literally just heard this band-not bad at all. So far I see the lead singer sings with heart and soul, emotions bubbling all over his face. You’re afraid he might burst. Love it. The first song makes you do a deep think.
that part in “Old Friends” where evan comes in on his own and does that little chord change during “solipsistic moods” honestly brought a tear to my eye, what a fucking band
This is such an old comment but I relate to it atm. 🥲
Me to Country music: This could be us but you playin'
Lol welcome to folk music
@@marshtab For real. How do people miss this?
@@GreyMatterPlatter I guess only certain people have the patience and, dare I say, taste for nuance? At least he has a career though, because a lot of people haven't missed this!
6:16 "I saw Leah on the bus a few months ago, saw some old friends at her funeral" cuts me.
Pinegrove got me through so many social anxiety moments and got me back into the world two years ago. I love how Evan finds every feeling and detail of a story/moment. The storytelling is almost like the conversation with yourself, in a way. I’m most upset that I missed this era to see them live or even just Evans solo tour. I’m looking forward to the new era! I hope I get to experience this live someday but I’ll live vicariously through TH-cam. 😂
the sound on this is fantastic! kudos to you NPR. What a fantastic session
Sounds so fresh in 2020
Better in 2021
It still goes hard in 2023
The little background “ahh aahhhhh” harmonies Waveform give me chills
EDIT: All the harmonies on Waveform
Thank you pine grove for making me take a pause from my life and feel something again. From the bottom of my heart.
I can’t put into words how much I love the way he did that first song!!! Just discovered them today. I Listen to this whole thing over and over at work, I’m obsessed and so thankful to experience it!!!!
I’ve been listening to pinegrove off and on for almost six years now. Their sound is just so unique and comforting that I always come back to it, this performance is my favorite ♥️
i love how everyone here has seen this more than once. this isnt something you forget about.
the calm "woo" and applause after old friends when i'd be scream-crying my freaking lungs out says a lot. i don't know what about.
god this version of angelina is just mind bogglingly good - goosebumps!!!!!!! whole set was a killer and beautifully mixed.
These arrangements just smash. I keep coming back. So much honesty and focus in the performance. Thanks y’all, and thanks to the production team for capturing it so well
I respect others opinions but how can someone dislike this video?? This is just beautiful even though I dont normally listen to this genre. They are just so talented. the way they are on the same frequency is not so common but so powerful. This is a video that is so powerful of enlightenment with the unconditional love for the songs and the music and the friendships and others just LISTENING can vibe with it. its truly addicting.
well there was some controversy surrounding him and a relationship he had with a woman. he's learned from it and they resolved their conflict through a mediator and she seems to be satisfied with the reflection and changes he's made as well as how he addressed it when it all came out. that's all we can ask for from artists. they are human and if they cannot avoid problematic situations to begin with then all we can hope is they do right by each other (the people involved) and they learn and grow and it appears that is the case with evan. (this was all more of a gray area situation than a black and white one btw).
He did some bad stuff that a lot of people are *rightfully* upset with him for
I went to Highschool in the early 2000's, it takes me back to my Dashboard, Saves the Day, Bayside days.
