@@txsgreen714 Although Lucy is the one with the most straight up rock and roll across her albums as well! I think all albums from the boys are at least 4/5 for me, but Historian by Lucy is my favorite of all. That record is perfect.
Julien’s half smile, half snarl before joining in “always an angel, never a god” is everything, like she knows something amazing is about to happen that you don’t know yet but are about to find out. Whoever was in charge of picking the camera feeds needs a raise.
Hmm.. Looked like a ghoul to me. Did you see where her face changed shape further along in the song. I loved their music and this song, but the more I read about them, the more they seem demonic. This performance pretty much confirmed it for me. Then to see they wrote a song called Satanist...they sold their souls.
The whole band has their strengths, but damn, does Julien deserve more love. Underrated guitar player and you could watch them play on mute and you would know exactly what the mood/feel of the song is and when it hits the emotional high/low points just by watching Julien. So damn good.
They are all fantastic but that drummer is FIRE. The little guitar riff Julien does after "canyon" kills me every time. That moment when Lucy starts on "Always an angel" in that voice like spiked warm chocolate is sublime.
Was that Keith Moon's daughter up there? Perfect beat, perfect timing. She stayed within the song but you can't deny those rapid fills and power. Those three are awesome, beautiful unaffected voices, just a killer song to play to. It took seven talented people on that stage to rock so hard. Who really killed on the SNL stage? Bruno Mars, Bad Bunny, Greta Van Fleet, BTS, and now Boygenius.
They all bring something a little different to the table, but IMO, Lucy has the best voice, Julien is the best lyricist (though Lucy isn't far behind) and the the best instrumentalist (not just guitar but anything she touches, but especially on guitar) and Phoebe, is the best arranger/compositionist (is compositionist even a word? probably not). I'm basing this actually on their solo work as it's impossible to separate the songs they sing together. But I'd like to say all of them are extremely talented across the board.
I got so teary watching this. Growing up in the 2000's there was so rarely this kind of mainstream representation of queer women joyfully, unabashedly railing on guitars, slamming drums, feeling all their feelings and having it be a superpower not a hinderance. Their performance was entirely for them, no hint of deference to the male gaze. Feels amazing to witness.
How wonderful to stumble upon this crew in my Sunday morning SNL viewing. They had me at the black hole in the kitchen! My listening for the day has been determined! Genius indeed.
OMG this gives me so much joy. I cry every time I hear this song, their harmonies are absolutely sublime but now seeing everyone bounce around enjoying themselves so much, that drumming, the bass that sounds like The Cure just after 'listening to boys don't cry.... ' Lucy's smooth beautiful voice, all of it is everything. breathtaking. thank you boygenius.
Just a superb performance and a very clever nod to The Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (Feb. 9, 1964). They're wearing the matching suits and Beatle boots, and SNL copied the stage set from that memorable Sunday night. Capitol Records used a photo of the band on the Sullivan show for the cover of their album, "Something New," released in July of 1964.
They are just so good and are actually improving every time I see them. Live and in broadcast scenarios like this one. A supergroup of huge proportions here. Amazing.
Always love the music that SNL books during sweeps and boygenius is a special one. I am sure the support staff and interns really enjoyed this past production week.
Stumbled on this band. I was a huge fan of punk, post-punk, Goth, and Emo. When I heard this song, I was blown away. They sent me into a rabbit hole of Indie. I'm still lost, finding so many bands, so many songs, so many stories being told, and even more still being written.
I love how they show they're so grateful to be making music together and enjoy it like, you can really feel the love they put into it. So proud of the boys 💞
