    I am glad nobody was hurt. That is the most important thing. The trucker certainly shouldn’t have backed up without someone watching behind the trailer, having said that, you should not have stopped in his blind spot. Many trucks have signs on them saying something like “If you can’t see my mirrors, I can’t see you.’ That is 100% true. I drove semi for a number of years and I have ridden for 50+ years and I never stop behind a truck such that I can’t see at least one of his mirrors. I generally pull up to the outside with at least half of my bike in the line of sight of the truckers mirror. You have to watch not to get in another lane and get hit by a car, but generally you can get outside the side of the trailer without infringing on the adjacent lane.

  • @jgoogleheim8880
    @jgoogleheim8880 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow. Hope the insurance covers the damage. Thanks for sharing this. The problem is you have to go out into potential traffic to be seen in the truck mirror on the left side and your in to the curb on the right. Even so if his cab is at an angle it may not have worked any way. Best thing may be to stay back at least 30 feet to give an escape route. I will remember your post!

    A similar situation having to a friend of mine on a BMW RT years ago. It was a pickup truck with a trailer that was set to take a turn at a T and then decided to go the other direction. She started backing the truck up and my buddy did like you and screamed and beeped the horn and she kept going until she hit the bike. It was a brand new bike with under a hundred miles on it if I'm not mistaken.

    This is a classic example of if you can’t see the truck drivers face in his mirror he can’t see YOU. I’ve been driving trucks and riding motorcycles my whole life, never never never get where you can’t see the driver in his mirror. I’m sure a lesson was learned here.
    Always pull up behind a truck well put on their drivers side so they can see you and you should be able to swing left and go around him.
    It’s not a “crash bar” though that’s ins intent is to keep car from going under the truck.
    It’s called an “ICC Bumper”

  • @BudFox559
    @BudFox559 ปีที่แล้ว

    From years of experience, and advice from old guys, I have learned, when ever I come to a stop behind any kind of vehicle. I always make sure they can see me in their left side mirror. There are two reasons for that. One, so that the can see me and Two so that I have some place to go on the left side in case the car behind me isn't going to stop. Seeing them in the mirror isn't always possible, but I try to be in that position on the road. I have always been afraid of being hit from behind. and at every stop light I think "Where am I going to go" if things turn to crap. My camera is always on.

    Glad you are on the mend. This is very unfortunate and could have been much worse. Looks like there is additional footage edited in there for “better perspective” from different angles and witness conversation not shown or clearly heard on the earlier video. A motorcycle accident hurts no matter how slow the speed. After 50+ years riding, I've had a few mishaps, but none serious. I've found it very beneficial to maintain the largest following distance practical, while always keeping truck mirrors in view so I can be seen. Also, when stopped in traffic, if prefer to leave sufficient space in front of me so I don't lose sight of the vehicles rear tires in contact with the pavement. This extra margin allows a bit more horn time if needed, not to mention extra cushion if bumped from behind, which happened, twice. I wish you a super recovery and many more miles of safe, enjoyable motorcycling.

    Trucker must not have the GOAL (Get Out And Look) stickers on his mirrors. As a trucker I’ve seen a lot of stuff, but this is a first. Nice to hear you are ok. The piece of metal on the trailer is an IC bar. It keeps cars from running underneath the trailer and decapitating the occupants.

  • @phoenix3166
    @phoenix3166 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Seriously, I have to comment on this. You pulled in dead center (no pun) behind a large semi trailer, the trailer started coming back toward you, and you sat there on the motorcycle beeping your tiny horn until being hit? There were so many things wrong with what you did, so let’s analyze.
    1) You pulled dead center behind the trailer which you not only did not leave yourself an escape path, you also prevented anyone in the truck from seeing you (not that he would have anyway)
    2) Rather than hitting the backin’ up button to get out of this situation, you chose instead to beep the horn. The driver is 400 feet on the other end of that truck from you, he wouldn’t have heard a nuclear bomb going off.
    3) Rather than immediately swerving and avoiding the trailer as much as possible, you just sat stationary in that saddle until you finally bailed out.
    4) Rather than contacting his insurance company on the scene, you only contacted your insurance company. (This is the paralegal in me)
    The truck has gobbles of insurance. You should’ve contacted his insurance company on the scene and informed them of the accident and that they’ll be buying your a brand new Goldwing (fully optioned of course). The driver did what we in the legal industry call “failed to maintain a safe operation of his truck by his own negligence”, thus causing damages. Your attorney would be able to tell you more about this, but the sum of a settlement is vastly more than just a busted fender and maybe bending out the forks. Even though you made mistakes from a rider’s perspective, the truck driver is totally responsible and if handled correctly would mean a brand new Goldwing, airline reimbursements, towing, hotels and so on.
    Good luck!

    There is a reason I avoid Midland/Odessa/Big Spring and pretty much all of I20 between Sweetwater and Monahans... He's wearing a headset required by FMCSA now for phone calls inside of semis. Legally he can't have both ears covered but now we have to wear some kind of hands free headset for any kind of phone calls. Glad you walked away it could have been much worse if he had just hammered it in reverse instead of a slower approach. Would definitely lawyer up to make sure the trucking company pays for the tow and any potential longer injuries that could pop up over time

    Given that you have footage of the truck driver and witnessing describing what happened, you should pay nothing at all and even your insurance company shouldn't have to pay. The truck driver's insurance, assuming he has any, should cover all of it. I would make sure the dealer itemizes everything they change on the bike and if, for example, they don't want to change out the front suspension, have that documented. The dealer knows the other guy's insurance should have to pay for all of it and should have no problem repairing the littlest thing. Even if your insurance gets the bill, the dealer will be paid in full regardless.
    Glad you are okay. If you have any lingering issues, get an attorney. You may not be the kind of guy who wants to file a lawsuit, but if you injured at all, you are entitled to compensation.
    If you can provide an update as to which insurance company will pick up the bill we all would appreciate it.

    Sorry about your WING!
    The truck driver is totally at fault for backing into your WING. But, As a veteran rider giving people viewers advice? You could have easily avoided that accident. Because, if you cannot see the side mirrors either from a bike or a car? You are way too close to him; and in effect, you are well inside of his blindside with no escape path...Just saying!
