Yayyyy !!! After spending 3 days and many UTUBE videos I finally got the Brioche stitch after watching your video. I almost gave up ! Your explanation and tutorial was right to the point and fabulous. Thank You
This is exactly what I was looking for. I have been looking at brioche tutorials and knitting along for a while now, but no one has explained the k p p k pattern like you have. That is so helpful to have spelled out.
After listening to 3 different videos, and still not getting it (the people were knitting continental which made it worst), I finally found your video. I had to start over about 4 times, but now I f i n a l l y g o t i t!!! it was about time. After trying with all these videos, your comments really made me click. Now on to knitting a warm wintery shawl. thanks a million
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I am so glad I found this video you explained this stitch without confusion. The others I watch explained the technique with unnecessary steps which had me totally lost. This technique has intimidated me for several years because I could never understand correctly and always had to frog by the time I knit a few rows. Once I watched your video (3x) I was able to knit samples without errors. I knit scarf without mistakes. 😄
As a guy trying to learn brioche, I’d like to give you a sincere thank you for such a great video. I’m using this to learn, but also to swatch for a hat pattern I purchased. Thanks again!
Brilliant video thank you!! It took me 3 videos to find one that made sense and explained the important points including some that might be glossed over by others. Thank you 🙏🏻
Bravo! I am patting myself on the back because I FINALLY got it. Thank you for such clear instructions. I am now about to go on a Brioche stitch bender knitting all the patterns I had been avoiding because I just could never get the hang of 2-color Brioche.
To make the edges even it would be better to slip the first/last stitch, then knit/purl with following stitch-respective working rows. That way you get a clean edge.
I have tried to follow many other instructions and this seems to be the clearest I have come across so far. I actually got several rows knit , and knit correctly. I was wondering how I would have to alter either the stitch count (even or odd) to use the two colour cable cast on with your written instructions.
Thank you so much your instructions are so clear & I can see exactly where to place the needle & yarn I wonder have you tried beginning the row with a slip 1 yarn over as it really makes a neat edge in single colour brioche on an even number of stitches. I will be watching this many more times as I need to practice this a lot 🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
Thanks for the tutorial. Something's throwing me off though. In the video, it looks like you actually yarn over first, then slip1, but the instructions say slip1, then yarn over. Is it actually yarn over, then slip1?
This trips up a lot of people. I can't take any credit for coming up the term "sl1yo"; I'm simply using the terminology provided by the industry. However! To work a sl1yo - the first step is to bring the working yarn to the front between the needles (or leave it in the front if you're working a purl row), then slip the next stitch, then bring the working yarn to the back (or all the way round to the front again if you are purling) creating the yarn over. So TECHNICALLY the slipped stitch happens first but depending on how quickly you work the combination of movements I can see how it appears that the YO is worked first. Happy brioche-ing!
I plan to use this pattern to make a scarf to go with my brioche hat. So once all 8 rows are worked do I just repeat from row 3 through to 8 repetitively until the desired length?
After I finish row 8 and flip my work, I try to start row 5 but always have 3 stand alone stitches at the beginning of the work. I've followed this several times and it keeps happening! What am I doing wrong?
Hi Fra! Your english is great! And the answer is yes... kind of! I typically recommend converting brioche to standard knitting (here's a link to my video on how to do this: th-cam.com/video/p9UKA8d5Aa8/w-d-xo.html) and then work a stretchy bind off. My preferred stretchy bind off is as follows: K1, *k1, sl 2 sts purlwise to LH needle, k2tog tbl; rep from * to end. I hope this helps!
Hi there!! i realised i bought the wrong needles. i have the knobbed needles instead of the DPNs. is it still possible to knit brioche 2 colours on knobbed needles??
No - sadly it's not. You need to be able to slide the work from one end of the needle to the other to work the second color. You could feasibly work 1-color brioche, flat, but that's it. I'm so sorry! That's a bummer.
Hi! I'm trying here ☺️ But somehow, the second set of 4 roads became inverse... Mmmm I wonder, what tovdo after the fourth road, and before the fith. Do you slide the work, or turn it? I wonder what i have done wrong 🙄
I'm new to brioche, but I think you turn the work. After the fourth row, both color working yarns are on the same end, so you'll want to pick up your first color again and work from there.
Do you mean flat using a circular needle? It's exactly the same. As long as the needle has two points it won't be any different. If you mean in the round, as if to make a hat, I have a separate video for that in my video feed - 2 Color Brioche in the round. Hope this helps!

I should clarify - it's exactly the same with the exception that you would be using the other end of the same needle, rather than a second circular needle. For knitting brioche flat, using a circular needle, I like to use a 24" if it's available. A 16" works fine but you may find if a bit short depending how wide your project is.
Hello, most difficult is when a stitch is slipped. I find it impossible to repair and because I had to frog the entire peace and that is why I do not do brioche anymore or do you have a solution?
your videos really useful and great, so easy for me to follow. i don't know if you still accept request, but can you make videos about stockinette brioche in two or three colors alson in the round? I'm having a hard time reading patterns and so far your video always the easiest one to follow. Thank you!:)
Hi Rachael - so brioche is a much looser fabric than we are used to. Because every stitch is slipped and therefore much taller than a normal stockinette or ribbed fabric, everything is loosey goosey. Add in all those sl1yo and it gets WAY loose. As an example, if you typically knit 18 sts / 4" in stockinette using worsted on a US 8 (5mm) needle, you'd likely need to go to a US 5 or 6 to obtain 18 sts /4" in brioche. I recommend going down a needle size or two from your standard and see if that helps. And just a heads up - if you block brioche, it grows substantially! So be sure you block your swatch before you start any projects so you know what it's going to do before you knit the whole thing *getting off my soap box now* ;) If this doesn't help, let me know and we'll see if we can diagnose your problem further.
Hi there, I really this pattern but I only want to use one colour, will it be the same method or is there a different way if I'm not using 2 colours to get the same result. Thank you!
vivian law Hiya! I have a video for a one color version - it’s one color Brioche knit flat. It is worked differently so go to my channel and you’ll see it. I think it’s the first video.
I'm actually after a particular pattern that I saw on Instagram and I'm trying to find the pattern for it, is there anywhere where I can send you the image and you can tell me if that is the Brioche stitch?
Hi and thank you for the tutorial! I was just noticing that in the pattern you have written, on row 5 it says *sk1yo . Is this correct or should I continue to sl1yo? I wasn't sure if this was just a typo or if I am missing something. Thank you again. Happy Knitting!
You start off with 'much like yesterday's tutorial'... where can I find that - Do you have a link to it? And, do I need to watch that first?? Thank you
Julia Shashi I did a weeks worth of Brioche tutorials in order, chronologically. If you visit my channel you should see them all. While it’s not necessary to watch you may find them helpful.
Please for the love of god, help me. I got about 10 rows in, enough it seems for the pattern to show??? Well, the front looks like it's supposed to, but the back of it looks like a horrible, awful mess. What am I doing wrong? I've frogged and restarted like 15 times. I want to do this so bad :'(
MyNameIsZura Hmmm... I wonder if you're swapping the knit and purl sts on the back side? Can you shoot me an email with a pic so I can help you? Connect with me thru my website: unapologeticknitter.com
The Unapologetic Knitter well, I had ended up frogging my latest attempt in frustration. So when I got home, I was set to try again so you could show me what was wrong... only this time I peeked in on the written instructions... and found out my mistake. Forgive my clumsy explanation - I'm really new to knitting - but I thought the pattern was bark, burp, burp, bark, burp burp. But it's really bark, burp, burp, bark, bark, burp, burp, etc. 2 rows of each instead of 1, 2, 1. So I tried it that way, and it actually turned how how it was supposed to... that, and I was getting confused on what to do with the first few stitches at the beginning and end, but I just needed to listen better. Now that I slowed down and paid extra attention, I got it to work. I guess my subconscious just wanted me to plead for help first. Anyways, sorry for the novel, I'm just extremely excited. And thank you for the amazing tutorial - never on my life would I thought I'd be able to knit, let alone BRIOCHE KNIT!! Wouldn't have been able to do it without you! :D
MyNameIsZura well way to go! If you wanna email your success pictures I'd still love to see it. But I'm so pleased you found success! Brioche on, my friend!!!
Zura, Don't give up. I have been trying for 3 weeks and just finally knitted my first swatch that looks like it should. Try watching a few other videos on flat 2 colour brioche then come back here. It may just give you the insight to figure it out.
I want to buy wool for this so hope you can answer my question soon? If normally I would use 10 balls for a blanket do I need double the amount of wool for this pattern? Or do the many slip stitches make me need 2 x 5 balls? (2 colors) please answer soon? want to start making baby blanket.
I recommend you cast on an even number of stitches. All of the instructions are in the Description of the video. I think you just have to click "Show More" to see it all there. Good luck and happy brioche-ing!
This is the best, easiest explanation I have ever seen! Even better than the class I paid for! Thank you so much!!!
Yayyyy !!! After spending 3 days and many UTUBE videos I finally got the Brioche stitch after watching your video. I almost gave up ! Your explanation and tutorial was right to the point and fabulous. Thank You

OMG. I am going to agree with so many others. I have tried so many times, and brioche would just not sink in. UNTIL NOW. Awesome, awesome video.

As per usual, I just have to find instructions specifically from you to grasp the concept. Thanks again!!
I agree you made the most understandable instructions I've found, I have been super frustrated trying to learn this stitch.
As a guy trying to learn brioche, I’d like to give you a sincere thank you for such a great video. I’m using this to learn, but also to swatch for a hat pattern I purchased. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this fantastic tutorial!!! I've tried several videos, and yours was the only one that made sense and worked well!! Well done!!!
Best explanation of brioche. I finally got it!
Brilliant video thank you!! It took me 3 videos to find one that made sense and explained the important points including some that might be glossed over by others. Thank you 🙏🏻

This is by far the best tutorial! Thank you!
Thank you for your clear instructions and for providing the written instructions. Well done. Now all I have to do is learn it.
It was really hard for me before but, now I can easily KNIT (Brioche two colours) after watching your tutorial. thanks a lot
This is the clearest explanation of brioche I have found. Thank You!
Strongly second this! Yay, I can finally do it!
Best explanation I have seen so far. Thanks!
I've tried this one for sooo long, well, thanks to you, I finally understood it :)
Your videos are brilliant! - thankyou so much for teaching me to knit brioche :D
I am so glad I found you! Another really clear tutorial - thank you! Not too wordy at all by the way! :-)
Thx. You are my go-to for picking up dropped brioche.
1:28 Row 1 (last stitch 2:07)
2:40 Row 2, row 6 (last stitch 4:16)
4:56 Row 3, row 7 (last stitch 5:44)
6:18 Row 4, row 5(RS, using Color 1), row 8 (last stitch 7:24)
Very good commentary! I easily followed your explanation.
This video gave me the "aha!!" moment I desperately needed. thank you!
Great tutorial! i will try this stitch and make a sample. Then i will have a try on a sweater i have been wanting to knit for ages!

The two color cable cast-on is an even number of sts as is the above. So you won't have to change anything! Brioche on!!!
great tutorial. thanks! but somehow I keep getting 2 extra stitches + the selvedge stitch on Row 4….grrr.
Thank you so much your instructions are so clear & I can see exactly where to place the needle & yarn I wonder have you tried beginning the row with a slip 1 yarn over as it really makes a neat edge in single colour brioche on an even number of stitches. Great explanation. Thanks so much. I feel I can now go forward with the project I am working.
This is so awesome...I finally get it...thank you!
Yay! I'm so pleased it was able to help you!
If I wanted to make this wider, do I have to cast on a certain amount of stitches? Like, an even number or a multiple of a number?
Herbert 1496 Just an even number - any multiple of 2.
The Unapologetic Knitter Thank you! I just wanted to make sure because since certain patterns and stitches have certain specifications .
However! so which rows are repeated then till desired length?
Very clear instructions!
Thank you for explanations. Please can you put a movie with a pattern with big leaves?
...once you knit rows 5 through 8, are the rows continued 5 through 8, 5 through 8, etc?
Yes - exactly right!
@@mfisher4118 Thank you :-)
I plan to use this pattern to make a scarf to go with my brioche hat. So once all 8 rows are worked do I just repeat from row 3 through to 8 repetitively until the desired length?
Belinda Lance Rows 5-8.

Hi! Sorry for my bad english but I've a question: how to bind off the brioche stitch? Is a simple bind off? Thanks for your help!
Hi Fra! Your english is great! And the answer is yes... kind of!

Sobs.. ok its ok!! I learned something!! And thank you!! 😊
Try one-pass brioche, that's possible with knobbed needles 😉
Hi! I'm trying here ☺️
But somehow, the second set of 4 roads became inverse... Mmmm I wonder, what tovdo after the fourth road, and before the fith. Do you slide the work, or turn it? I wonder what i have done wrong 🙄
