It would depend on the laws of the area lives in and what the legal elements would be there. On its face, it seems that he could sue for slander. So, per this story there is merit. But, the question is what are the damages? Is it going to cost him more money to sue than he could possibly stand to even gain from her? Can he sue her for the depression and all of the therapy? What would be the requirements to prove non physical damages where he lives? Does she have any assets to even go after? That is the sticking point. Probably the practical thing to do is hire an attorney to send her a cease and desist and maybe get her to issue a retraction & public apology.
