  • If you're watching on a smartphone, apologies if the BGM seems too loud! 🤦😥
    Here are my thoughts on the S1 RM, a rear motor mounted retro styled buggy from Taiwan RC maker PR Racing. If you're in the market for a high performance machine with old stool looks, then you might want to check this out! I also compare it on track with the G Force Hobby Genova and Kyosho's Dirt Master.

    Couple of things. First, the BGM on this video is a lot louder than I thought it was, especially if viewed on a phone. It is better on a computer. 😞 Apologies if you're struggling to hear me! I need to get better at sound mixing. 😥
    And secondly, if you're in the US you can (probably) get the S1 RM from here: shop.prracingusa.com/index.php?route=common/home
    or try their Facebook Page: facebook.com/prracingusa/

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought they would! They sold out here in the first week. Next batch is due in mid December. I've already applied my usual warped logic when it comes to RC and figured, given the cost of spares here, and I plan to run it at the track, it would be cheaper in the long run, you know, to just buy a second kit...
      So I ordered kit #2 😅
      With the Super Dog Fighter, '87 Worlds Spec Optima and the S1 RM, it is an expensive couple of months!

    Nice vid! I have only done the unboxing so far but the chassis is a big step forward vs the other two. I'm starting to think we now have a new class leader in this new segment and fingers crossed we see a few more offerings come to market. I'm not sure if these are selling enough units for the manufacturers to keep them going, but I hope this class doesn't fizzle out before it's had a chance to grow. Right, I'm off to start building my S1 RM

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The S1 RM feels much more like a high end race buggy when it's put together and for the price is a real bargain! 😊 Likewise, I hope that the popularity of this new segment continues to grow. I think a lot will hinge on clubs offering races suitable for these modern/retro buggies. As good as the S1 RM is, I don't think it would be competitive against modern high end mid-motor mount buggies.
      I can't speak for elsewhere, but here in Japan the Genova is really popular and you see them everywhere. It would be great if you took the S1 RM to your local indoor track. Not only to see how well it does, but to give others the opportunity to see the kit in person. That alone will persuade others to give PR Racing a try! 👍

    I've just built my S1 over the weekend, pretty impressed with it but I knew what to expect as it's not my first PR buggy, they are super high quality and great value here in Australia. Only issue I had was a ball cup split while popping it onto the ballstud, other than that it's one sweet bit of kit and the grey ball cups on my SB401R are better quality and should fit. It's also $50 au cheaper than the dirtmaster here so that's a no brainer and the parts prices are cheap too through our local distributor. Can't wait to get it on my track once I get the ball cup replaced. Thanks for the excellent review.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, at that price it is an absolute bargain! And you've got access to cheap spares too! 👍 I've picked up a few essential spares myself, but given the cost I'm thinking it would be cheaper to just buy another kit! 😅

    Great run through of the buggy and the comparisons between this and the others. It looks really nice out on the track and it is probably way better than my driving skills are LOL!! Not a bad price on it for what you are getting either. If this was a Tamiya buggy it would be in the $500-700 range and it is only $220 so it it is quite tempting!

    • @KaiCityRC

    Thanks for the work made here. It was good to know how the categories are settle at your track, it helps understand it better. As I really like Pr racing products, and same goes for the S1, I personnally find the body being a miss. But it is just a personnal point of view.

      The S1 RM is my first PR Racing Buggy, but it won't be my last! Very impressed with the brand. 👍
      Most of the tracks here seem to follow a similar system of dividing track time between various levels of performance. Tsukuba RC Arena uses ten minute slots for entry, stock and modified classes. For the most part, I think it works well.
      Thanks! 🙂

    Great vid, David. I kinda miss the BBX on this comparison.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I had thought about it, but to be honest I feel that for a variety of reasons the BBX isn't suited to run on a high grip carpet track. Dirt, would be a different matter. It is by far the best looking and the most enjoyable build, but it is also a relatively complex buggy and while I wouldn't call it fragile, there is plenty that could be damaged. In a way it's like my Holiday Buggy. I enjoy running it around the track, but it's body doesn't last long with regular crashes...as happen a lot. 😅 😩
      Cost wise, it's essentially the same price as the S1 RM. But it would be no match for it in terms of performance.

    Great video David. I’m looking forward to building mine😊. Are there any hopups you would recommend? The prices of option parts in uk are not too bad.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've already picked up a few hop ups myself! 😁 It's a little pricey, but the S1 Ackerman Board CNC Aluminum part No. 66430366 is a good idea for better steering. Not that there's anything wrong with the stock set up. That said, pay careful attention in the manual to where it says not to over-tighten certain screws as they can cause the steering to bind. The alloy front hinge pin brace part No. 66400376 is another one I picked up.
      As I plan to run this regularly at Carnosa, I also went ahead and got the graphite (hard) lower sus arms, plus spare steering knuckles/castor blocks etc.
      Thanks! 😊

  • @lorrylemming
    @lorrylemming 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interesting to hear that PR Racing's rear motor buggy has a lot of steering. Their mid motor buggies are much the same, setup with lots of steering out of the box, more than a B6 series for example.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was surprised at how much steering it has for a rear motor mounted buggy. I had expected it to drive much like my DT-02, Genova and Dirt Master.

    Again an excellent video, thank you. I was looking hard at nice quality, not-too-expensive 1:10 2WD and 4WD buggies (to be run on pavement) for our daughter. At times I was close to go with a Pro 2WD buggy like Associated RC10B6.4D and only the cost brought me back on the ground. If S1 RM were available in Europe I would have very likely got it, but at the end of the day I went with (yes, a bit different car) 1:14 LC Racing Truggy kit as it offers a very interesting price to quality ratio (based on what I have seen on YT). The also have a 4WD 1:12 buggy (Apparently a longer/wider version of the 1:14 variant) and then a Pro 1:10 4WD. I would be interesting to hear whether you have experience with LC Racing. The Truggy shall start to be build in about a week - I am curios how it will go and whether our daughter will like it.

      I've not got any experience with the LC Racing. I know they're available in Japan, but much like PR Racing only sold via a few model shops. I've heard they're pretty good and reasonably priced. It's always good to try something new. 👍

    Great video David, really interesting to see you pit these three against each other. The S1 RM does look like a really strong contender to the others. It is completely subjective of course but I'm surprised the looks of the S1 RM came out on top. The chassis looks very nice but I have to say the body styling is very bland and lacking in character IMO. Looks are extremely important for this class of car because if you just want the best performing modern chassis obviously there are far better options out there, so the draw for these cars has to be the vintage style rear motor/cab look. They've played it very safe, there's nothing about the body that offends the eye but at the same time there's nothing to draw it either. I'd like to see a little bit more creative flare, so if I had to pick one the Genova wins for me.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree totally. 👍 Looks are a big part of the appeal for this type of buggy. I was surprised by the results of the poll and by comments from other drivers at the circuit. I was sure the Genova would be the clear favorite. In all honesty I hadn't expected the S1 RM to replace the Genova as my favorite of the bunch, but the more I see it the more I like it. I'm a fan of simpler design aesthetics, so I guess that's why I'm gravitating towards the S1 RM. 🙂

      Good question! There are no dirt tracks in my area, so it would be hard for me to test. I'd imagine they would be pretty evenly matched though.
      Indeed, the next time I'm at Carnosa RC park I plan to use some foam spacers to run shorty lipo batteries in the Genova and Dirt Master and see how a forward battery position (like that of the S1 RM) changes their handling. 🙂
