Height Shrinkage (Loss) during the Day

  • We're taller in the morning than the evening.
This is a typical day for Rob and shows how his height can vary from 8am through till 8pm.
(I never quite hit my usual low this day)
To find your peak morning height make sure you measure within a minute of waking up as we shrink and lose height quite fast within the first couple of hours out of bed.
Nobody really sees me at almost 5ft 9, apart from Jenny and Sookie ;)
By the time I've made myself presentable and stepped out the door, I've already shrunk a large chunk.
This is why I personally wouldn't claim out of bed height. While of course a valid measurement, most people are seeing you after being awake a few hours and you've lost a good chunk of your height from the morning.
At lunchtime, on average, most people won't lose that much more through the evening.
You can see at lunchtime my height loss is nearly complete and by dinner time I'm pretty much at my lowest height. I typically maintain that low through the evening, or at worst shrink another mm if a bit more active.
Sometimes though, I can even creep back up a mm or 2, especially if I've sat down to watch a movie or TV show.
Jobs that involve walking, standing, lifting and rotating can all cause slightly different variations in height throughtout the day - you are far more likely to shrink to your lowest height quicker as the stresses placed on the spine can accelerate the effects of daily height shrinkage (the water content of our discs reduces slightly due to the compressive forces of being upright). You may even reach an absolute low, which could be 2mm less than what you measure on less stressful days.
When we sleep (or even lie own for a period), our discs can recover, rehydrate and when we wake up again we are at our peak morning height (assuming you get 8 hours sleep like I managed in this video).
Remember this stadiometer adds 1/8th inch (2mm), my low this day was really 5ft 8.25! :) I was well hydrated so didn't reach my usual lowest which is 5ft 8.25 on stadiometer (so about 5ft 8 1/8th in reality).

    Morning Height: 183.9cm (6’0.4”)
    2hrs later: 183.15cm (6’0.1”)
    4hrs later: 182.7cm (5’11.9”)

    10hrs later: 181.8cm (5’11.6”)
    14hrs later: 181.65cm (5’11.5”) (Sometimes I don’t shrink further from the 10hr mark)
I lose about 2cm-2.2cm of height a day. I start off the day being well over 6ft tall and end the day being slightly under it. I always claim 6ft.

I think the morning height should be your "official height". Same with your weight. You usually weight yourself in the morning before breakfast and drinking liquids. There are so many factors throughout the day that can affect your height, so morning is best. I am 6.4 in the morning, but I am barely 6.3 after standing and walking all day.

What's up Rob. At age 33 I had compressed my spine so much from weightlifting I had lost a good bit of height. I started hanging upside down and slowly over the course of 6 months or so decompressed my spine and gained back over 1/2 inch of height. Now I just hang for about 10-15 mins halfway through the day which keeps me at full height and better posture. Much of my back pain was also relieved.

A 7'0" on average will definitely lose like 1.5" throughout the day for sure. Also, some science, genetic shit to do with whatever it is that makes people lose more height will just, you know, make people lose more height throughout the day than others simply. shrinking depends on proportions and body weight, the more your height is dominated by uper body + short legs, the more room you have to srink.. people on the opposite who have very long legs and smaller torso shrink way less.. and so it with weight, heavier bodies shrink way more than slim bodies.

You said laying down for 10-15 min would decompress your spine (I've also heard something similar from another person), I have given it a test to see the extents of its working after around 6-7 active hours where I've lost around 1.2-1.3cm, I've only managed to regain 0.3cm following a 15 minute lie down. For me personally it doesn't seem to be efficient, especially for those shorter on time.
What would you say is the most productive "decompression per time spent" activity that can be done (some particular stretches?) during a short period at midday, I'd assume hanging would be one of them, but something like that is not always within the reach. Perhaps something more manual?
Also just a comment to one of your messages on here, with me weight lifting actually seemed to have done the opposite effect. It might have something to do with me gaining weight/muscle mass (as I was border underweight). Doing squats would logically decompress, but as I've gone bulkier over a year by 50 pounds I have gained a little morning height of around half an inch. That's during mid 20's. Correlation may not be causation, and it might have been some unusual late spurt but overall size increase seemed to have affected my height that seemed to have been static for several years.

      @subie1019 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Justice Rule I do squats too, if I do it in the morning, normally by noon I would reach my Low height of 180.2cm but there is no permanent height loss as Long as you have the correct posture while squatting and regarding the weight gain, maybe when you were underweight, your core was weaker or your back was hunch, as you started working out you have a stronger core and stronger back hence you had better posture.. just an assumption

Is it reasonable that being overweight, (In my case I would say by about 40-50 pounds), and running or doing sprints can significantly increase someone's daily shrinkage? Because I'm convinced that I'm losing at about an inch throughout the day and I'm slightly taller than 5'9 in the mornings but I'm going down to a little over 5'8" at the end of my day.

It depends what you're doing during the day. Even if you exercise by running/sprinting, but afterwards you lay down or sit down and relax for a while you will easily gain more height. But if you're extremely active and constantly on your feet all throughout the day then yes, you will definitely shrink more than normal. I'm not sure on being overweight though.

Rob, how much sleep did you get the night before? How well did you stretch out your back? How long were you up before measuring in the morning?
Your morning height is not fixed and neither is your evening height. My morning height is not the same when I sleep 6 hours compared to 9 or 12. Likewise my evening height is not the same when my morning height is taller or when my overall day is shorter. Are you aware of these fluctuating ranges?
BTW, my avg wake-up height is 178 cm
    After 1 hour: 177 cm
    Late morning/early afternoon: 176.5 cm
    Late afternoon/early evening: 176 cm
    Bed time: 175.5 cm
But I have woken up at tall as 178.5 cm and gone to bed as short as 175 cm. That is my entire range.

I am about 183 cm right after I wake up. After 20-30 min I'm like 181 cm. How is it possible. I have had back problems. So i did some exercises to stabilize my lower back and suddenly I was able to hold my height almost till I go to bed. I continued to do thoses exercises occasionaly and somehow I again start to shrink in the morning.
