You inspired me to believe that I could start silversmithing...and I did! I had my very first sale yesterday! I'm loving every minute of it. I can't stop thinking about it. I can't quit dreaming up ideas. I can't quit buying beautiful stones. My Rio Grande wish list is a mile long. I appreciate you and how you continue to inspire me and other "self taught" artists. Thank you!

I started my beginners silversmith class today and was so discouraged, I cried in the car after the 4 hour class. I go back tomorrow for another 4 hours and because of you and a couple of very uplifting girls in my class, I am going to go back, and I am determined. I guess sometimes it's not the actual teachers, but the good people on the sidelines that make you realize you are capable...i really thank you for this video! It was nothing against the teacher but I just felt rushed and so out of the moment and I had random strangers in my class of 5 people giving me hope and cheering me on. As much as I was discouraged, I was encouraged to try again.

In most of my favourite courses I've ever done it was my fellow students that made the experience great. Don't give up! You may have just made some great friends. I'm also a slow worker and hate the feeling of being rushed, so I can relate to what you're saying.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You are more than capable, sweetheart! It always takes time, we all stryggle in the beginning, regardless what we do, and this jewelry maiing technique is one of the hardest, so don't be hard on yourself! 😊🙏 Give yourself time to try enough times to know if this is for you or not. You don't have to be good from day one. You can try, experiment, learn and most importantly - have fun! Don't give up too fast. Like J J said too, I myself hate being rushed, judged too quickly and I also hate negative "motivation". Use the class to learn and work at your own pace. You'll do great!

Basia and Megan Collins are great teachers on YT, there are many more, just be very careful about sending money for lessons, some are okay, but others are charging a lot for lessons you can get free, so look around. Soham Harrison is good, The Diamond Mounter is very good but charges £10 a month for full lessons, but I pay him, he was a top London maker. There are more just keep looking.

My start started when I was 52 years old I had a beautiful necklace it had a lot of gold in it it was purchased by jeweler in my town I kept that necklace for 30 years one day after going to the grocery store I noticed my necklace wasn’t there anymore it fell off I never found that necklace again. I love that necklace so much that I wanted to build one just like it I started watching videos on TH-cam on how to make certain necklaces and they settled on a Cuban link and I used a quarter pound of gold I Purchased all the tools rolling mills torches everything $25,000 worth of tools Pepe Tools Rio Grande Epsie and others inspired me to make That replacement necklace and I made it with a locking clasp.

This craft is SO awesome!!! I will be taking courses in May that will give me the basics of Jewelry and a Certificate that will allow me to practice jewelry-making.
    Im SO exited 🤩
I started watching videos on TH-cam randomly on how they make rings and I haven't stopped thinking about doing it !
Its the first time I choose to learn something with such intention.
I wish to everybody to find their thing to do in life ❤

Ive spent the past week ive been learning how to tie friendship bracelets and loving it, and im very quickly expanding my horizon about it today and something just kinda clicked, for me, i want to make jewelry and things that make people feel beautiful. Been lost in what to pursue in college for a while now and i think ill give this a well worth shot. Your video was one of the first few looking up "jewelry making" videos on yt and im glad i did! Im such a hands on person that loves art but I dont see myself as a painter, just someone who creates🤷‍♀️

it's never too late, that's so true! ❤️ For us, the way our perception works, it's always today. And it's always a good time to start something. You can always not do it later, or change it for something different. But don't hold yourself back simply because you think that "now it's too late" ❤️

You are so inspiring (and it's cool to see you're also from the UK)! 💛 Thanks for sharing your story. I'm sure you've helped to encourage many people to follow their calling from this video alone.
Here's a bit of my own story. I had a crisis in my final year of university realising that the course I had chosen wasn't actually my passion when presented with the reality of entering work for the rest of my life. Like you said in this vid there were also hints of what was calling to me whilst on my course as instead of doing my Computer Security/Forensics coursework I just used to go into the library and play around with 3D software.
Ive also suffered heavily with my mental health throughout my upbringing & these past few years especially. Social anxiety/depression (I've also learned recently that I very likely have autism & ADHD) was making it very hard for me to hold down a job (constant anxiety attacks, always on the verge of being fired due to attendance, struggling with money & debt etc).
Since failing my final year of uni, I decided I needed to make some very drastic changes and started to fully explore what I was passionate about all along. Subjects ranging from 3D design/3Danimation/3D printing, fashion, electronics and a few others. I thought if I'm going to set up a brand that's authentic to me I need to combine all of these different areas into one. I started self learning everything on TH-cam & online courses. Fast forward a few years later & I have gained knowledge and experience in all these areas & I feel confident to start selling now and play out my vision (still got plenty of growth to go though!)
A few years ago I never would have even thought about me being able to set up my own brand (especially working from home which is perfect for me considering I still struggle with social anxiety but not as much since I gained more confidence/life purpose & direction). Everything has lined up perfectly for me recently and I'll be starting very soon, probably just after the new year - just getting round to finalising my first products, branding and a few other things.
Btw if you got this far thank you for reading haha! I'll definitely make sure to follow along & support you on your own journey! :)

Wow!! Soo encouraging for us newbs.. especially old newbs like myself. Lol It’s still possible. I started a year ago playing with wire and really want to jump into cutting my own copper, soldering, torching.. I even purchased everything for Electroforming jewelry simply because I fell in love with the pieces I’d been seeing, but with little to no knowledge of construction. There are no kinds of classes right now, due to Covid, so I’m stuck with tutorials for now. Thank you for stressing the point that everyone works at their own pace, and progresses at different times/ some more lucky than others just having a natural knack. It’s so hard to look at social media and see others who are also only a year in or so remotely ever touching wire beforehand and are light years from my skill level. 😢 It’s so hard to not compare, although I know I shouldn’t. It genuinely stops my progression. I need more videos like this! Thank you for sharing your journey and congratulations on your success! Your rose quartz set at the end was beautiful!!!😍😍💚

I'm currently a university student (as you can imagine, that factor already makes me super broke) but I decided to make and sell personalised jewellery on etsy all alone as well... currently I'm looking into wire work and seeing your video really motivated me to continue with my brand and passion.
