    hiya flower good one again, I started of with one of those little torches I was forever filling them with gas costing a fortune, I saved my pennies up for quite some time then I invested in the eze torch or orca as its called uses propane, 25ltr bottle I think it was about £23 but lasts for ages, you do not need any oxygen with it as you mix it on the torch think its ambient air or something , when I was using one of those small torches I think I got about 3/4 bezels done then ran out of gas half way through another made me sick, I think the torch was just over a $100 when I got mine but I highly recommend it, for someone just starting out its cheaper than the little torch set up or if your on a tight budget, those small tins of propane gas 3,4,5,£ per tin depending where you live fills the torch 3/4 times or you forgot to replace and run out half way through a project and the shop is shut arrgg, take care keep well keep safe very much look forward to your next vlog.

      I AGREE! I've heard that the Orca/EZ torch is the most common/used torch around the world for just those great reasons you mentioned. Simple and great price. I have yet to use my Smith Little (given to me by a retiring jeweler), love my simple (Smith Silversmith - similar to Orca and far less expensive...) torch.

Am I right in thinking you know Kim? She can use the 'Go Gas' torch in a garden shed so could you not use it in your flat? No oxygen bottle & she says she does not need one for the work she does! As to calling it a fail, I would call it a part of life making jewellery. The slightly larger size that Andrew uses as do I, is more powerful but still what might be used in a kitchen. • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! You need to choose the right height of the bezel and make sure you fit the shape well. You can always add some prongs to secure the stone further. Anyway, to set the stone with this technique you need to make sure that it's evenly flat on the back, so it won't move and will be easy to set and secure. Good luck!

    You shouldnt be soldering over a metal wire because the heat will go there and no to the silver thats why it takes long

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean, that the metal will work as a heat sink, but in this case, it doesn't actually. It's a small wire mesh that heats up very fast and it actually helps to heat up the metal faster. It's because your metal is a little above the charcoal block (which is perfect at reflecting heat). I found this method work for me best (with my tiny torch) and helps me reduce the fire scale cuased by overheating.

I must say, this was the most entertaining, spot-on - LOVE the comments of insecurity - video of said wheel reinvention. It's a REAL experience! Basia kicks butt with her little torch (I love the big sigh she breathes when describing her torch limitations). I wish this was the first one I ever watched when I was learning that project first. Basia is a fantastic teacher, so approachable, encouraging, it's like she's got her cheerleading uniform on complete with pom-poms, rooting for the watchers/students' success! Beautiful and simple. I like this because I don’t have a lot of patience to spend a lot of time on extra ordinary. Minimal is just as great. Thank you so much!! Your jewelry is beautiful 🌺

    When I wrap my bezel wire around my cabochon it fits perfectly, nice and snug but, after I solder it on the stone no longer fits! Help please! What am I doing wrong? I don't want to waste anymore product.. 😞

    Hi, I first wanted to thank you for the video, I reckon it will help me a lot!! But I was wondering, would this method work for an epoxy resin pendant in which I want both sides to be visible??

    Hi Basia, awesome video again! Could you tell us how you store your silver before you work with it, so it doesn't oxidate? Much love :)

      Hi Pauline, thank you so much for watching! :) So when I buy sterling silver sheet from Cooksongold, they send it wrapped in that blue, protective plastic foil (you might've seen it in my other videos), and inside of the plastic bag. I keep it like this until I'm going to work with that metal sheet. As for the wires, I keep them in the plastic bags as well, I found it to be sufficient enough for me. Hope that helps! 😀❤

      @@TheArtOfMetalsmithing That helps a lot! I guess it is also good, to keep them out of the sun? I had the wires in open paper bags and didn't really think about it...

    Hello, I found your page a few days ago and I'm soaking up everything I can from you as I'm a self taught jewelry maker myself, so appreciate your page very much. What I want to know is, is the Torch in your description the same one as the one you are using that you said isn't very strong??

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you so much for watching love! 😍🙏 Yup, this is the very same one! I had to say that it isn't very strong, becasue, well, it isn't 😄 BUT, I have been using it successfully since the very beginning and I managed to make some lovely things with it (you can check out my Instagram page to see what I have in mind, my profile is @stardustmine.art). So I'd say that at the same time it is quite powerful for a torch like this. Definitely a great option if you're looking for small, portable hand torch.

    Thank you so much. I absolutely love your videos. I haven’t officially started soldering, but I’m gathering info and supplies. What are your thoughts on the paste solder that comes in the syringe with flux in it? I feel confused about the type of solder to use! Any info would be so appreciated 🙏

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks so much for watching and your comment ❤️ he paste is great, but definitely for small elements. It wont replace the traditional solder. I tried experimenting, and know for sure that it's a waste and it just doesn't work as well. But it's amazing for little balls, flowers and any small elements! :)) So definitely get the regular solder, for example the wire one or sheet, that you can cut into small pieces and use with the flux. And you can also get a paste for these small elements :)
