  • How to make a ring - tutorial step by step! Let's make a unisex silver ring. Today I will show you how to make this simple, wide band ring from start to finish. I'm using sterling silver, but you can use other metals too, like copper or brass. You will need to check the proper solder and soldering required for these specific metals! Other steps are quite basic and the principles of making stay the same regardless the metal :)
Today we will cover how to get the proper size (make sure you check the link below to the Rio Grande website with the ring size calculator!), how to solder and shape the ring, how to clean the metal, sand, pre-polish and polish! I will be doing satin finish on this ring. I hope you enjoy watching and learn how to make a ring at home.

Thank you so much for watching Rachel! I didn't have the ring bender up until recently, so I would always bend the rings with my pliers :) There are different ways, this was just one of them, which worked for the wide band in my case. If I was using thinner, round wire, I would overlap it on the ring mandrel and then cut to the size. It's faster and more precise this way :)

A Dremmel tool (rotary tool) is something you should already own. Tell your husband to buy one- they aren’t expensive. It should be battery powered, not corded.
You can cut tile, drywall openings, sand and polish small things, etc.

Your simple easy to follow step by step instructions are great for people with no/minimal knowledge of silversmithing (just learning the names of tools, terminology, processes is helpful) An excellent explanations of the tools and processes involved and high quality video production make it very enjoyable and informative. Appreciate you also showing how you can do things in the most basic, minimal tools possible too. Thanks for inspiring me.

Hiya again, yes you've done it again, another great piece of jewellery & another great video! I would have said I always like a bright shiny piece of silver... then you came along with this ring & now I find myself thinking I'll make one the same, just not an M. Or I might even make two, one of each for either thumb? I too love that yet again you have shown how to do it, 'Low Tec' with elbow grease not power tools. Most of the other teachers show the high tec way & say, you can use wet & dry & it works but then do it the easy way, almost saying I've no need to do it that way anymore because I've got the best... You & Kim always show the hard way & I like that. So thank you Lady Stardust, take care & stay safe... Steve x ...

hiya flower good good good one yep liked, hope more to come keep up the good work, spread the word, making jewellery is expensive the way the price of gold and silver are going but when you make something from start to finish the satisfaction of seeing your efforts even if its wonky all over the place you dont care you made it by your own two hands, dont have to use gold or silver bead work wrapping stones using brass or copper wire you can make rings bracelets pendants all kinds of things, if your in lockdown you dont have to go out there are places online where you can get each all and everything you need to get started, i dare you give it a go you can even have a bottle of wine at your elbow, sermon over just hope it inspires as did the video, you take care flower keep well keep safe hope we will get some bums of seats and start them creating.

Hi Basia! Thank you so much for making this incredibly informative and helpful tutorial! I am a self-taught metalsmith and have been soldering and making rings for about a year now. But I’m still feeling unsure when it comes to finishing steps. As I watched you go through the various silicone bits I saw that you seemed to go the opposite direction with the bit, meaning instead of going around the in and outside of the ring w/ the bit you were going up & down. (I hope that makes sense)…my question is: does it matter what direction you go with the bit? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, it is very much appreciated 🙏🏼🙏🏼😊

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing

Hi! :) Of course you can have open backs! You will need to make a cut out, and leave some area around to secure the stone in there. So, in other words, to have this backing, which - when done right - can be very narrow and almost invisible :) I'm planning a tutorial for open bezel. Though this type of bezel is definitely trickier in a ring, than a necklace. But not impossible, you just have to plan the area well (ring shank).

Hi when cutting the ring , before soldering, what saw blade size do you recommend as I usually end up filling it as the saw blade leaves a rough edge , and your gap is almost invisible,
    Cheers Simon ( Newbie )

Hi Basia, I'm planning to apply a brushed finish to a ring I'm making - it has a large bezel. I'm worried about the area where the ring shank is soldered to the bezel backplate and whether the brushed finish will reach into those tight spaces, or whether I will have an inconsistent finish. Any advice would be warmly received. Thanks again for your helpful videos, Em x

Is there a standard for how thick the metal should be for starting ring blanks? I started making earrings with 24 g sheet silver but I dunno if I’m being a perfectionist and sanding away too much material bc I’m ending up with very thin earrings! I’m worried I’m gonna do that if I use it for rings and change the ring size. Would anyone recommend ring blanks starting with a thicker gauge? Maybe for starting out since I go sand-happy? 😬😁

Hello. Thanks for your video :) can I ask what wire gauge do you use for the labradorite ring you made and also for the staking rings?. I am on the process to order wire and I am very confused as I have ordered 9gauge and is very thin.. Thanks :)

Check out this video I made about metals to start with, I think it might be very helpful! th-cam.com/video/GiKQoYljekE/w-d-xo.html I don't remeber for the Labradorite ring exactly, but I think it was similar to this one, which is 6mm x 1.2mm. For the stacking rings I've used either 1.20mm or 1.50mm. Please check the conversion to gauge online 😊

Darling, it is "STRIP" - sounds like Drip - (water dripping) or "sip" ("have a sip of tea"). Not Stripe. The white ring STRIP for measuring ring size! Your accent is so lovely and your communication is wonderful! B, is "fire scale" and "fire stain" the same thing? Thank you so much, always wonderful!
