Religion, faith and the role they play today

  • Religion and faith are an integral part of people’s lives worldwide. But in many countries the number of people who believe in God is in decline. We examine the changing role of religion around the world
Click here to subscribe to The Economist on TH-cam: econ.trib.al/rWl91R7
The majority of Americans believe in God. But it’s a different story in Britain where, in 2009, people of no religion outnumbered Christian’s for the first time.
And it’s not the only country where religion is in decline.
In Israel, only 39% of the population consider themselves a religious person. In Norway it’s 30%, in Japan just 13%. But China surpasses them all.
Only 9% of Chinese people report themselves as being religious and the majority say they are committed atheists, making China the least religious country in the world.
But how reliable are the polls in China?
The communist government is officially atheist and religious freedom is restricted in the country. So it’s likely that many Chinese people, who hold religious beliefs, do not report it.
But, globally the picture is very different.
84% of the world’s population say they are affiliated to a religious group.
    Around 7% are Buddhist.
    15% are Hindu.
    24% are Muslim.
But the largest religious group are Christian, making up nearly a third of the world’s 7.5 billion people. But this is set to change. It’s predicted there will be almost as many Muslim’s as Christians by 2050.
This is because Muslims on average are younger than members of other religions, and they have more children. This has made Islam the fastest growing religion in the world.
The religious profile of the world is changing, but even in areas where religious affiliation is declining, spirituality is not.
America has become less religious in recent years, but the percentage of non-religious Americans who say they often feel spiritual has risen. Globally 15% of atheists believe in life after death - So if faith deserts you here, there’s always the hereafter.

    • @id1666

Nope. These statistics are based on questions directly about faith such as "Do you believe a god/gods exits?" etc. and more and more people answer no. The richer the people, the less they believe, albeit it takes a few rich generations to take effect. Just wait and see when the rich oil-arabas start abandoning their religion one by one in the next few decades, just like the ones who were born in Europe are doing. The start is slow as social pressure inhibits freedom of will.

Mohit Mishra - Religions is only declining in the West. The world is getting more and more religious. There is a surge in Buddhist Nationalism all over Sri Lanka, Thailand and Mynamar and other south east Asian country. Hindu nationalism is growing in India and Nepal. Christianity is also booming in Africa and China. Islam is becoming more and more conservative. Religion isn't dying except in the West.

@@id1666 pretty late here, but believe me, those arabs aren't even following islam anymore. Ironic seeing that islam spread from there. They're just as bad as any other (maybe even worse due to the human trafficking and bombings they give the orders to). I swear it makes me feel ashamed of being a part of the same religion as them, even though i've lost my faith quite a bit.

I left Hinduism in 2017 after finding islam as a religion closed to real life . I found Hinduism a fictional story based and dream like religion. Islam is real and true religion made for huma being .but there's a problem with Muslims ( not with islam) . Peer group think is driving opinion. Where it is illegal to think of your self as religious - when questioned you say no. Where religious belief is publicly expected - you answer yes when questioned.
In the US, if you claim atheism, you will find it harder to prosper in society - the opposite is true in China. Imagine a senior Chinese official claiming to be 'religious' - they will not be senior very long. In the US imagine the speaker of the house, claiming that religion is false, they will not be house leader any longer.
Then there are those states and nations where your personal faith or non-belief is not government and society controlled.
Your society drives most of your beliefs.

I truly believe that a lot of people choose a culture or religion or atheist stance etc because they feel that it is non mainstream simply as a defense against being marginalized as a lesser value person. It might be growing hair long in the 60's or getting tattooed all over these days, or joining islam or wearing punk hair and clothing etc etc etc ....if people feel like they are up against this massive institution and they feel they wound up on a lower rung? Feeling like no one important? Join something that makes you feel special and that has a rebel element to it against the mainstream status quo ....even join a religion if it welcomes with open arms and a "place" can be envisioned that is superior to what one started with...it offers that shock value "I'm THIS which is BETTER/smarter/RIGHT" . If you ask me anyways... Being now an old man who has "been there done that" myself too many times ...as to be thoroughly embarrassed now... It is ALL just a bunch of ridiculous lying to ourselves (IMHO) ....even those buying the mainstream as superior and right born to be the elite ...maybe they are worst of all even....bottom line if you ask me? We are naturally like a bunch of junior high girls when it comes to being strong HONEST individuals...very sad actually ...again if you would ask me....Personally? I REPENT big time! At all costs now I want to be an individual with my OWN thinking and ID ....a thing which costs many times but offers a feeling of being clean somehow...

Buddhism has been introduced to China nearly 2 thousand years ago, Islam is not a popular religion among Han people in China, mainly the Uyghurs in north west china are Islamic from ancient time.
Christianity, on the other hand, is the main religion in the west, especially USA. It's not all about religious belief, it's often about politics over these issues in China.

In order to do that you must either purposefully lie or lack the capacity of differentiating between theory and reality.

    thanks for the video!
i jus want to state something. :)
i don't agree with your main reason for the number of Muslims increasing.
Although yes I agree with the children being more
    but
i think reverts also play the main role in Islam being the fastest growing Religion
extra: (by the looks of it; im saying this because nobody can tell whats in peoples hearts. for example, some people on the outside may be muslim, but do things which contradict islam. so we can never fully judge someone. so we should focus on bettering ourselves)
    thank you for reading :)

In the atheist government countries, the government don't give a shit about your religion, you can follow any religion you want, report or not is not important. Atheist In my country is mean they do believe in after life ( or not), but they also don't believe in the prophets (Jesus, Buddha) they just learn way to live a better life from religions, not the faith in some one (Jesus / Buddha), they believe in the system of the universe (and there's no gods controlling it). I'm one of them.

What? The majority of Americans believing in God? I don't see why you would perceive that as a good thing. Religion has only ever been a detrimental and divisive factor in American Society. Sure, it does ever so occasionally bring people together, but looking at the bigger picture, it does more harm than good...

I don't wanna suffer another life fearing about death and time if reincarnation is real. Time is more frightening than death

Quran 45 “The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. Indeed, within the heavens and earth are signs for the believers.
And in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs for people who are certain [in faith]. And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason. These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe?”

Because he knows that everyone has the right to believe in any religion or at sometime to reject any religion. So who the hell tell you that there is no religion freedom in China ?? i love my father !

    • @zacharytimer4335

Munir Mohammedali Islam still holds on to old ideas that were made for a world in poverty and lack of science. Examples include, not trusting anyone but Muslim, killing non-Muslims because they're not of the faith and honour killings plus the abuse and torture woman go through. Islam well is a growing religion is one that is ever going backwards that will eventually lead to either war on Muslims or a reformation which I doubt will happen at this pace. So please, come back with a response of any kind. I would love to hear it
