This was great, thank you! I was going to attempt to do my own brakes for the first time I’m glad that you mentioned the piston retractor or I would have been screwed
I've just changed the pads on a 2005 Daihatsu Sirion 1.3 and it's virtually identical to this. I had a service on a VW Golf at a main VW dealer and the brakes needed changing all round. When I picked up the car they said everything was ok and it had been road tested. When I pulled away in the car I nearly ploughed into cars in their car park because they obviously hadn't pumped the brakes to seat the pistons correctly. They also told me that they had washed the car, I complained because the wings were covered in black hand prints, their answer was that they washed it and didn't valet it. I would expect better from a main dealer. I had just spent £1100 on parts and labour
What a fancy tool to push the cylinder back in. I just use a "C" clamp or a large slip joint plier. But before I push the piston back in, I use a glass syringe and I inject old brake fluid under the dust boot. A rag catch the excess as the piston been retracted.Since I started doing that 35 years ago, I never get another seized caliper.
@@axios76 it's for rear brake calipers that have and internal e brake they need to be rotated back in when compressing the caliper piston. these type can be used on front calipers to.it also helps to crack the bleeder screw to relieve the pressure when compressing the the caliper piston. While in there, I'd always pull out, clean, and relube with silicone brake grease both caliper slider pins; mine are usually pretty jammed (unlike yours which are beautiful!).
Thank you for the video it was very good I did notice you did not grease the slide pins with purple colored grease or was this because the pins where sliding okay And yes do not breath n the brake dust wear a mask
Questions. What's the threadlocker for? To lock the thread I'm assuming. ..but why? What is the specified torque of the refitted 14mm bolt? How do you retract piston without the tool?
Threadlocker is used where vibrations may cause nuts or bolts to loosen. The torque setting is in the video description, it's 34 Nm (25 foot pounds). Here's a video showing how to retract a piston without any special tools (for front brakes): th-cam.com/video/E6iso9mVi8g/w-d-xo.html
I would advise jacking up the front of the vehicle and supporting it using axle stands on both sides of the car. If you only jack up one side and then turn the wheel that's still on the ground, it could move the car a little bit and possibly make it fall off the axle stand supporting the raised side.
The front pads wear out quicker than the rear pads so you don't always change them at the same time. You will need to check each set of pads separately and only change the worn out ones.
No, but keep an eye on the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir as you push the piston back as it will rise. Remove some fluid, if you need to, to stop it from overflowing.
Did you bleed the brakes off camera? Or can i skip bleeding the brakes altogether?? Pls i have to change my own brakes today because i go to work at 4am tommorow😭🙏
You don't have to bleed the brakes. If it's done properly, no air should get into the system. After you change the pads, test the brakes and then break them in slowly. No harsh braking for the first 100km or so..
@@badpixels_ These pads are about 16mm thick (including the steel backing) so they should fit. Did you push the slider pins in as you put the caliper back over the pads ?. They can protrude out a bit from the caliper bracket and get in the way
I was thinking the same thing... How would you change them next time without chewing the nut head .. great video aside from that but I would like to see the g clamp method

Wow, that's pretty bad alright !
Thank you for the video, you can also use a clamp if you don't have access to a retractor.
Yes, but be careful not to damage the rubber piston seal or any other part of the caliper :)

I think this tool is for caliper pistons which are not pushed straight, but has to be rewinded.

Nice tutorial, do you think yaris breaking system is bad compared to tother cars? Mine always slides

Can i just use a c clamp or do i need the special tool for the brake
You can use a clamp or other tools as long as you're careful not to damage the piston seal or any other parts of the caliper
what can be an alternative if you dont have a tool to pull back the brake piston?
This video should help you out: th-cam.com/video/3RYG0ymWEFE/w-d-xo.html

If you only jack up one side and then turn the wheel that's still on the ground, it could move the car a little bit and possibly make it fall off the axle stand supporting the raised side.

It was copper grease on the back of the pads. It helps stop the brakes from squealing

What happens if you leave the cap on the brake fluid reservoir? Won’t the caliper cylinder still compress?
It will still compress but taking the cap of relieves some of the pressure and lets you keep an eye on the fluid level as you reset the piston.

Do you need to crank open the caliper bleeder valve when doing it? Thanks
No, but keep an eye on the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir as you push the piston back as it will rise. Remove some fluid, if you need to, to stop it from overflowing.
@@screwsnutsandbolts why people open the bleeder in other videos? Or its just that yaris has a simpler system?
