This video is BLOWING UP for no reason the last few days! If you’re new here, be sure to hit Subscribe for WEEKLY videos all about Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited, and the rest of the DC Animated Universe!
Edit: Since this video is getting a lot of new traction, a lot of the same questions are coming up.
    1. They’re prostitutes. The one that looks like Black Canary had her character model repurposed for Black Canary years later. Check out our “Birds of Prey” video for the info: th-cam.com/video/iVzWpTBDrxo/w-d-xo.html
    2. The censored cut was the only available version of the film for a couple of years. The original version was re-edited because the Columbine massacre happened and it was studio mandated. The censored cut was released in 2000, the “original, uncut version” in 2002.
    3. Yes, there is a THIRD version that combines these cuts, that seems to have aired in some countries outside the U.S. If anyone has a copy of this version, please let us know!

I love the logic, "The death is too brutal... we want you to censor it."
"Well, we could have Robin causing the joker to be electrocuted to death off screen."

It's not about gruesome. One has a kid killing someone with a gun on camera, the other is an accidental death off camera. Gun violence is much more "real life" on top of having a child pulling the trigger.

@@pazuzu66613 But accidental tripping wouldn't have happened had Robin not pushed Joker.
I get the reasoning behind it, but the fact that they cut to a silhouette of his reaction to being electrocuted despite it being "off screen" made me terrified to watch that scene again for the longest time and I was 14 then. I don't think the censors quite understand that kid's are capable of extrapolating what's going on pretty well from watching a silhouette of a person that is being electrocuted. And for the record, I saw the scene again in director's cut two years after it came out... and I wasn't as scared... shut the original scene off due to being way too fucking scared to see it play it out fully.
I reckon I'm not the only one who feels that way too.

For those thinking "A Gun shot is way less horrifying than electrocution" you kinda missed the idea of the scene, this was Robin taking a Gun and killing the Joker in cold blood before breaking down crying. Robin had thrown him back to try and defend Batman but the Joker accidentally killed himself, that wasn't a cold blooded murder, it was an accident. Seldom do we see a Hero, a child nonetheless, murder the villain in cold blood to defend someone else. This wasn't to make the Joker's death less horrifying, it was to make the lengths Tim was willing to go to clear if it meant protecting Bruce, even against Joker's Reprogramming

I like the uncensored version better because it’s more in line with what someone would do if they were tortured and drugged for days before being made to murder their adoptive father figure by their tormentor. Robin sees that in that moment the only way out is to end it. joker gave him the gun, Bruce can’t save him because he’s been stabbed and cut up. So robin breaks Batman’s one rule to save himself and Batman, and then he breaks down because killing someone is traumatic unless you’re a sociopath.

As much as the uncut version is the best, I honestly have to commend them for working extra hard to create a censored version. Honestly the seat belt scene should have been in the uncut. Who drives without a seat belt lol. I don't even remember ever seeing the censored version when I was little. I always remember being so shocked to see blood as well as seeing joker die in what was once a kids WB show. Great memories. This show as well as its predecessors was the reason why I loved batman. Nowadays, I never see a reason to keep up with everything. These shows always kept it nice and neat. :)

The differences between Joker's uncut and censored death, are arguably one of the biggest and most interesting differences between the two versions.
It's like watching two separate realities of what happened. With the uncut version being were the Joker technically won. He torture and brainwashed Tim Drake so badly, that he was left a broken, crying mess after taking the Joker's life.
In the censored version, however, Tim's will proved stronger as he resisted and then fought back against the Joker.

      @Blazieth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

It's not how horrific the death is; the censors didn't want a kid pulling the trigger on that gun to kill the Joker. Whereas the electrocution is an accident. Robin gets him covered in water and tangled in the wires, but the actual electrocution is due to The Joker slipping in the water and reaching out for something to catch himself on, and grabbing the lever.

  • @Harkness78

People who prefer the censored Joker death are insane!
    1. It happens off screen, while the uncut death happens on screen
    2. Uncut death clearly shows that Joker is dead, so it makes Joker being alive in the future even more miraculous.
    3. Joker viciously slashes Batman across the chest, so it is way more believable Batman is on the ground incapacitated. In the censored version he just fell off some bricks and he hasn't taken any other damage up to that point. Seeing the censored version, I was like "why is Batman just laying on the ground at the Joker's mercy, is his spine broken?"
    4. Uncut has blood coming off both Batman and Joker, a testament to how brutal their fight has been up to this point.
    5. "Deliver the punch-line' is a much better line and straight to the point. Joker wants Batman's death to be an elaborate joke. Batman being impaled by his own ward as the "punch-line" to not only the joke, but Batman's entire career, is super effective writing! "Make him one of us" doesn't make sense, the gas would make Batman into a mind controlled zombie just like Robin? Obviously not, that took weeks of peeling back the layers of the boys mind. So what is Joker saying,? That if Batman dies by laughing gas that is the same thing as being the Joker or JJ? Make him one of us is really vague and not nearly as effective.
6.. Tim having to make a snap decision, breaking his programming for just a second, and shooting the Joker makes his struggle much more dramatic. Throwing the gun aside, and consciously rushing the joker and pushing him (because punching would be too violent) makes it seem like the programming was not that strong and he could just do whatever. The physical immensity of his transformation is much weightier in the uncut.
    7. In the censored Robin is just, i don't know, trying to delay the Joker until Batman can recover? In the uncut he has to decide, kill Bruce or kill Joker. That is the only reason he is able to break his programming, because the Joker is trying to make him do the impossible. Much more impacful.
    8. Killing Joker outright would mess Tim up way more than than pushing him into a puddle and electrocuting by accident. Makes Tim's ordeal he suffers even more harrowing and the guilt he feels in the future even more real.
    9. Most importantly, "That's not funny! That's not....." *dead*
PERFECT line for the Joker to go out on! Like there is no better last word from the Joker. It's all a laugh riot when inflicting pain on others, but when it's time for his ticket to get punched, all of a sudden the laughing stops! Not so funny when he is the one to suffer. Forget the 8 other points above, this null and void makes the uncut death 10x better than just an off camera scream.

I kinda wanna see a revamp cut where they keep most of the cut sequences of the og with the added fixes in the censored version but the major change i really wanna see is a spliced version of the flashback where we keep the joker's original monolog for the brainwashing tim electrocuting scene but with the censored cut's electrocution death for the joker as it would tie all three instances of electrical energy together into one thread of cause and effect. Like poetry, it rhymes: Joker shocks tim, tim causes Joker to shock himself, and terry shocks the joker out of Tim's body. Hmmm 1992 huh? One of the writers once said Batman during the animated was aged around 32, which doesn't give us a definitive age, but we'll just say he's 32 for the sake of this thing, this would make Batman 79 in Batman Beyond, possibly 80 on his birthday. Which means Bruce retired at age 59, possibly 60. In 2049 when Terry is older and takes complete responsibility and accepts Bruce as his real biological father, Bruce would be around 90 years old, which makes sense looking the way he did, however it kind of contradicts Static's quote "60 being the new 40". In 2079, batman would be 120, which is possible, but we're gana go ahead n say... He's dead. Supposedly Superman is 3 years older than Batman, despite his younger looking appearance. But it makes sense because in 2039, Superman seems to have aged very little and looks around the age of a man in his late 40's. So assuming he keeps that up, there is no doubt Superman is still alive in 2079, and is barely that of a man in his late 50's or early 60's. N knowing Superman, even at that age, he may not be in his prime but he is more than likely not retired and can still kick ass. I would assume by that time, Terry is either retired as Batman Beyond or is like Satic says barely in his 60's which is the new 40's and still fighting crime. The only character that I can honestly think of that outlasts everybody and has probably not aged a bit, is Martian Manhunter, who I remember someone saying he was over like 3,000 years old or something like that idk, his kind lives a long ass time. So ya... Ha in 2021, Terry is born... "Sigh" I'm so old.

I find some of these changes interesting. I suppose I like the uncut for the extra violence and souped up fight scenes, but I also enjoyed some of the censored. Such as I didn't enjoy the entire censored death of joker, but the fact that batman smiled because Tim had the courage to throw a gun away I found pretty neat. The harley color change I found fine as well and probably cause I'm a Texas guy but click it or ticket lol XD

The problem I had with the censored version was that it made Terri look like he was almost the perfect fighter (not taking too many hits from the villains, and looking like he's doing all the work, which is what the censored version did by editing out footage), but in the uncut version, it shows him getting hit a lot more, showing he still has a lot to learn and it just seems more natural for someone who hasn't done this as long as Wayne has.

I think the reason that they kept Harley's colors in the censored version, is because it was meant for kids, rather than teenagers/adults like the uncensored version. Teenagers/adults would have no problem picking up who the grandmother is, (Harley Quinn), but for childern, a visual clue might be helpful, if only to confirm to them what they think...

I have to hand it to them, they didn't skimp on the censored death scene. They could have just cut to Batgirl hearing a shot and that be the end of it. The animation of Joker slamming into the tanks and getting doused was really (pardon the pun) fluid, and that's a lot for an added scene.

Everyone who says the censored death of Joker is superior: You are plain wrong. He slips and kills himself out of clumsiness. How is that a fitting end? In the original ending he dies by his own creation. Tim is driven to insanity and horrifyingly, he seems to be aware of what happened to him. Which is why he kills Joker. He crosses the one line Batman never did, because he realizes that what Joker did to him can never be erased. The censored ending redeems Tim and suggests that everything will be alright, the uncensored ending shows that the kid is too far gone and he won´t be alright. Joker won.

@@BlazeIgnitus That's still only indirect. The uncut version has Tim personally, directly pulling the trigger. Tim shot Joker dead in the uncut, and that level of personal responsibility hits a lot harder, and is important.
Even if Tim caused the mess by pushing Joker into the glass and breaking it to spill the water, it's still the Joker who slipped, and reached out for the lever. Tim didn't pull the trigger, he just handed the Joker the gun.

One of the few things that actually makes sense here is the addition of seat belts, seriously they are not only to keep you from becoming a meat crayon but especially in a plane or vehicles that go really fast they keep you attached to your seat so you stay in position in sharp turns etc. I mean race drivers use something closer to a harness than a regular seatbelt partly for this reason.

  • @howboutno3474
    @howboutno3474 8 ปีที่แล้ว +74

As far as The Joker's death goes, I prefer the censored version. Notice how Tim doesn't kill Joker. It really shows how well Tim regains his sanity and remembers what Batman taught him, which to me is an awesome characteristic for a sidekick of Batman to have. Batman also shows a relieved smirk when he drops the gun, which is a sign that he's proud of Tim for not going down that path. Tim fighting off the Joker, and throwing him into a water tank makes more sense in the case that he's just trying to kick his ass instead of murdering him, which something Batman wouldn't wan't him doing. Not only that, but The Joker's death is much more brutal and impactful. That scream is just... pure chills. But I'm completely fine with how the uncensored version went down.
Other than that, everything about the censored version practically sucks, and even if the whole point of it was to show a more friendlier version of the film, they could have at least edited it better than they did.

      How Bout No
I feel the same way, but I have to admit that seeing Tim visibly struggling to not shoot Batman in the uncensored version is really unsettling. It shows just how broken he is, where he's nearly so close from slipping off the edge that he can't make sense of what to do. It makes it look visibly PAINFUL for him to do the right thing. Tim at this moment is the literal definition of someone with Stockholm's syndrome, and it shows with his reluctancy to kill the Joker. He literally has to fight himself to stop from pulling the trigger on Batman. In the subtle movements of his face, as twisted as it is, you can see fear, anxiety, pain, then when he finally shoots the Joker, you can almost feel the weight lifted off his shoulders as he sinks to the ground and starts crying with Barbara just holding him there.

Censorship of animation in a nutshell unfortunately, and without meaning to be offensive it's kind of even worse in America because from what I've seen in studying it, American culture for a long while contained so much fear/anger over anything remotely inappropriate that it's a wonder such potentially violent cartoons were shown on TV at all. As I said in a comment above it's a ridiculous combination of people not realising that animation can be for adults/teens/older kids, and then looking at said animation and demanding it be made appropriate for younger audiences because omg a superhero cartoon couldn't possibly be for anyone other than children. Even if this movie was aimed at children after all, as I don't know for sure, they really don't give kids a lot of credit for how much they can really handle.
