Should I Have Bought a Honda Civic Type R? | TEST DRIVE

  • I took a test drive in the Honda Civic Type R to contemplate whether this could have been a choice for me over my Ford Focus RS.
    While I'm currently taking part in the Mille Miglia in Italy, I wanted to publish some videos that were never released, including this with the Civic Type R. During the stop in Auckland, New Zealand I visited Honda Cars NZ to take it out for a drive to see what it's like.
    First up we can take a walkaround to explore the exterior before jumping inside for a quick look ahead of taking it out, in what turned out to be pretty horrific traffic for the afternoon. On return it's a better play with everything inside and the displays, and some final thoughts about the main question.
    Thanks for watching, Tim

    I really don't understand why people find the Civic Type R to be "ugly." I don't find the design to be any more controversial than the McLaren Senna or the Lamborghini Veneno. Both of those cars are respected because of the brand and the aerodynamics of the designs. The Honda hasn't necessarily been given that same treatment and the only reason I can think of is that people simply don't like to be given anything that is "faux" or "fake." While I can appreciate that notion, I find it hard to believe that anyone could tell me with a clear conscience that their car(s) never had any faux or fake parts on them. My point is that we have all had a car with inexpensive or cheap parts installed in it from the factory. That is just something people have to deal with in the car industry and until materials like carbon fiber, wood, and metal become less expensive, it will continue to be that way.
    As for the car itself, I find the level of performance, technology, comfort, and design to be quite astounding at that price point. The Ford Focus RS is a pretty tough rival to compete against in the market, especially since it boasts one of the best all wheel drive systems in the industry. Honda, however, has always proven their front wheel drive cars to be more than adequate in delivering power when it is needed the most. That, in itself, is pretty admirable considering how much history Ford has in the hatchback category.
    I will admit that I am somewhat bias towards the Civic simply because I own a Honda, however, I have always liked the Fords for what they represent. The racing history and pedigree that Ford has, both on and off the road is quite extraordinary. In the end though, I would still have to pick the Honda, mostly because of the sheer value it brings to the table. That is something Honda has consistently been great at from the very beginning and something Ford should look towards implementing in their future RS models.
    Thank you for reading and as always, good luck in all your future endeavors.

      Casey Collier those two cars are formed from function. Every detail is there for aerodynamic reasons, and so the ugliness is more acceptable because it is a compromise of function over form. This civic though, well they chose to make it look that way for no other reasons than style. The back end on a boggo standard one looks just the same. It's a disaster in styling for no functional benefit.

      I actually agree with you there on the aerodynamics and that is something I failed to detail in my comment, so thank you for pointing that out. That being said, I would still like to make the case that the two examples I gave (McLaren and Lamborghini) were seen as controversial because of their radical designs even though they had every reason to model them in that manner. The Civic Type R may not have the same aerodynamical properties of those cars, but it does still make use of the front splitter, rear diffuser, and the wing. That is undeniable and while I have to agree that it is overdesigned, I wouldn't necessarily call it "ugly" like some people immediately claim it to be.
      One of the other reasons I brought up the McLaren Senna and the Lamborghini Veneno was to draw a parallel between what we've seen with those designs and the Civic's in the response of the public. I believe that we will start to see changes in stance on these designs over time. Heck, many people have already changed their opinions on the 720S, a car that sparked just a fraction of the controversy of it's track oriented big brother. The Senna has also seen some shifts in attitude which is largely due to it's sheer performance and capability on track. That, however, is not yet the case with the Civic Type R even though it ran a record setting lap at the Nürburgring. From what I can tell, this is owing to the fact that the Civic Type R is simply not focused enough on the track to warrant a change in perspective. This, of course, is just one of the many reasons I believe the car has ended up in this position.
      These ramblings are just my thoughts on the matter, so don't take it personally. I just find it unreasonable to rail on a particular design when it really isn't necessary. I think many people just assume that Honda modeled the car that way to make it look "cool," but I have found over the years that there are many designs that have very good reasons for odd shapes or placements. It is incumbent on all of us to be reasonable and understand that we might not have all of the information needed to completely criticize a choice that a person or company has made.
      Thank you for reading.

      I would suggest that you do a little more critical thinking before you start spouting statements that were never uttered by the original poster (me). In other words: I think we've encountered a straw man and a fairly large one at that. I never once stated that I was comparing a Honda to a Lamborghini or McLaren in the context of the actual car. That would be patently absurd and would qualify me for a visit to a local psychoanalyst if anything else. I was merely drawing a parallel between the responses of the general public to the two examples I gave (Veneno and Senna) and the Civic Type R in the context of design. All three cars were and still are fairly controversial in terms of their overall appearance with the Senna actually being least out of the group. Interesting, isn't it?
      I hope this has cleared a few disconnects up for you and as always, good luck in all your future endeavors.

      @@kokekan75 The 0-60 time doesn't tell you much apart from that it's slower from a standing start. On a roll it pulls on the Golf R and Focus RS, check out carwow's drag race if you need proof. It beats the other hatches from 10-70mph which means in the real world it not only feels faster but IS faster...unless it rains of course!

      The worst because it has transmissdion issue which Honda ignores. Hydraulic clutch system is too close to the exhaust which causes fluid to overheat - clutch doesn't decouple fully even if you press it all the way - you're effectively changing gears using forse which causes significant wear&tear, jarring etc - transmission is gone withing 15-20k miles with no track days.

    • @FastLifeVlog
      @FastLifeVlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sic22l I've heard that some exhaust insulation will solve the tranny issue in R. And obviously better oil in both tranny and the engine. 0W20 is shitty tbh.

    • @fernandofragoso4118
      @fernandofragoso4118 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Conor Till 400hp FWD and RWD are better on fast cornering tracks due to lower weight which results in lower inertia. Above the 350/400 mark the FWD its not the best at the moment, but RWD is the best solution. Thats why you dont see AWD cars on BTCC. All the cars winning are RWD or FWD. The Civic Type-R is inspired on the BTCC car. Here in Portugal we also have a limited edition with Tiago Monteiro's signature and some differences from the regular Type-R.
      With the amount of downforce that these cars generate at high speed traction its not a problem, only on low speeds, thats why the traction added by AWD isnt in fact necessary, and in consequence will make the cars heavier. AWD is good for the public roads and rallies, because you might drive in conditions which can compromise the traction in both RWD and FWD. So if you look for a great all rounder to drive fast in every condition go to AWD. If you want a car to drive even faster but in a much more strict condition, go RWD or FWD. It will be lighter and lightness on hardcore driving is everything.

    • @FastLifeVlog
      @FastLifeVlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fernando Fragoso there are track that awd are etter options. Not to mentions wet conditions. There are Focus RS in BTCC. I wouldnt say they are slow. FWD or RWD has some advantages in fast track with long streights due to the weight. So all comes to the track types and conditions.

Turbo lag comments are correct, although when driven quickly the car is always within the turbo range

    Hello Shmee! Thanks for reviewing the Type-R. I bought mine in December 2017 in same color combo. The 0-60 is 4.9 sec not 5.7 sec. This is the FWD competitor to the Subaru WRX STI AWD and still cheaper than Subaru. However, great every day driver and long distance (850 miles) no problem for a semi centennial fellow. You will never drive the Focus RS for 800 miles straight, unless you're seeking punishment. Also beneath the canards, but above the lower front lip, you'll find a functional air flow opening for brake cooling purpose.

      Keep doubting. My 2012 KIA Optima SX which weighs 400lbs MORE and has "274" bhp (actually 252 bhp) does 0-60 MPH in 5.9 sec. You mean to tell me that a 2018 Honda Type-R that weighs 3100 lbs and 306 bhp is going to shave only 0.2 sec? Seriously doubt it, especially as a Nurburgring Track Record Holder. Reporting the facts is all.As advertised by Honda Corp.:Curb weight‎: ‎3111 lbTorque‎: ‎295 lb-ft @ 2500 rpmZero to 60 mph‎: ‎4.9 secPower‎: ‎306 hp @ 6500 rpm

      @Zerofightervi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Styli F Your Kia does the quarter mile in 5.9 seconds?
      I think you mean 0 to 60.
      Also, do you know where the FK8 Type R is produced?
      Swindon, Wiltshire, England.
      Have a guess where I live?
      Yes, the very same town.
      Now guess where I work?
      That's right, the very Honda plant that makes the FK8 Civic & Type R.
      The UK spec Type R will do officially 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds, journalists have got 5.6 out of it, baring in mind that the UK spec has 316 bhp rather than your 306 bhp.
      The Nurburgring record is done from what is called a flying lap & not a standing start so the 0 to 60 time is irrelevant really other than for bragging rights.
      Please feel free to send me a link to your figure of 4.9 seconds & I'll have a look, but I doubt it exists.

    • @nexamax
      @nexamax 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good copy, I edited my type-O, thanks! And THANKS for building my car, absolutely love it! I have seen a video of the Swindon plant and I actually have the British flag on the passenger side spoiler in honor of its birth country. Car & Driver (and many others) www.caranddriver.com/honda/civic-type-r I understand the difference between flying laps and stop-go 0-60. A poor analysis on my part, I do know better. If the Type-R does not hit, at minimum, low 5, I would be extremely surprised. I grew up in the world of racing in Switzerland in the 1970s and 80s. I've driven the very first Ford Sierra XR4i, RS Cosworth, and the Renault 5 Turbo.

    • @Zerofightervi
      @Zerofightervi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Styli F That would be quick Optima if it could lay down those numbers.
      Unfortunately the link you've sent isn't available in my region but I've got plenty of other UK based journalists who've never managed to get a figure so low for the Type R.
      Honda were quite cagey about actual performance figures at launch but 5.7 seconds seems to be what most have settled on.
      The thing with the Type R is being FWD it is quite difficult to get a clean getaway, unlike most of the competition which use 4wd & launch control.
      Glad you're enjoying the car, there is an updated Type R currently undergoing testing, some styling changes to the front & rear bumpers & the infotainment system is getting an upgrade, finally a volume nob & not the unpopular touch sensitive scrolling thing that no body seemed to like.

    Great review, I am loving all these reviews on the FK8! I own an FK2 Type R, and the FK8 is even better around corners, the chassis is amazing.
    Concerning the Focus RS, it's the faster of the two as far as straight line speed, and has AWD which is nice to have. But it won't come close to an FK8 on a track. It depends on what you want! The RS is a great car as well, has more punch than the FK8, but in the corners or on B roads, the Type R rules.
    *All these commenters want to talk about the FK8s straight line speed - yes, it's quick, but it is NOT a drag car. My mate has a factory spec (stock) 1993 Mitsubishi GTO TT, and it easily beats my mates' FK8s all day from a dead stop until 250kph by 2 or 3 car lengths, or from a rolling start* He also owns a 1995 US-spec 3000GT VR-4, also stock no modifications. We all hang out, and drive each others cars, i.e. the Mitsu guys, Nissan guys and Honda guys all get along. Seems here in the US its all arguments.
    Here's some drag strip results from 2 weeks ago, we spent all day there, these are all my mates cars. Multiple runs for some of the cars. Kph to mph for US readers-
    (US-spec) 2018 Ford Focus RS, 350hp - 13.28 @ 103.2mph / 13.32 @ 104.4mph / 13.31 @ 104.2mph
    (UK-spec) 2018 Honda Civic Type R, 320bhp - 13.78@104.2mph / 13.82 @ 104.8mph / 13.96 @ 103.9mph
    (UK-spec) 2018 Honda Civic Type R, 320bhp - 13.88 @ 105.4mph / 13.91 @ 104.2mph / 13.98 @ 105.1mph
    (UK-spec) 2015 honda Civic Type R, 310bhp - 13.95 @ 101.5mph / 14.02 @ 102.0mph (my car, bless it)
    (UK-spec) 1993 Mitsubishi GTO TT, 280bhp - 13.41 @ 105.9mph / 13.56 @ 106.2mph / 13.38 @ 105.6mph
    (US-spec) 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, 320hp - 13.18 @ 103.9mph / 13.06 @ 103.2mph / 13.24 @ 104.1mph
    (UK-spec) 1993 Nissan 300ZX TT 2 seat coupe, 280bhp - 13.77 @ 103.9mph / 13.89 @ 102.8mph / 13.82 @ 103.7mph
    See above!!!! Yes, the FK8 is a quick car, so is my FK2, but it has nothing on a 20 year old stock AWD Twin Turbo Mitsubishi GTO in a straight line race!
    To all the US Honda enthusiasts, ALL Type Rs are meant for corners, not for the drag strip. Even the NSX-R isn't meant for the drag strip.
    Put that heavy GTO TT on a B road, and even an EP3-R will dust it. My FK2 beats my mates GTO TT over B roads by minutes, I have to wait for him to roll up with brakes smoking.
    The FK8 chassis is amazing, and it handles as well as the 1993 J-spec NSX-R did in my opinion.

    Zero torque steer actually. Honda engineered the front suspension to compensate for the power. Multiple reviews have gone WOT with hand off the wheel and it's dead on. Minus the spoiler (Si Coupe spoiler should be an option), and the rubber band tires it's an amazing car (IMO). RS will prevail when the tarmac is wet though. Also EMS systems (Ktuner/FlashPro) are unlocking quite a bit of power from the engine. The aftermarket is also getting a boost from Honda putting some spirit back in the civic's. Cheers!

    Sad you did not get a chance to experience this car because it really does have a lot to offer when driven properly but it is also very comfortable for everyday use. I LOVE the look and performance of the car so so much I bought one. I am a husband and a dad of a teenager. Fortunately for me, my wife said our second car had to have a manual and it is simply amazing how much car you get for the money with this car and it actually fits in our garage with our other car. You also have that great Honda engineering and reliability and combined with the great warranty I will be having quite a few years of trouble free driving fun with this car.

    Type R by far. Had the use for an extended period of the RS and could not get on with the ride in any setting. Hence buying the Type R. Looks are 'marmite' to the individual on the Type R and the RS sound wins. But to live with, the Type R is overall winner. And Tim, the controls on UK cars are how they should be!
    And no gearbox issues for me after 12K miles! But the RS I used has been back to the dealer several times and finally had an engine failure! Confirmation I made the right choice - for me anyway. :)

    Indicators and Wipers are that way because the car is engineered as a RHD to begin with. In the UK, most cars are the other way round because being surrounded by countries that are mostly LHD, most cars sold in the UK are engineered as LHD and then converted to RHD. Also the case with several UK built cars where it's cheaper to engineer as a LHD as it means less money spent swapping over for export to mainland Europe since that's where the majority of revenue is generated.

    Have you heard about gearbox issues prevoius model has? Apparently, catalytic converter runs so close to the clutch slave cylinder, which causes it to overheat, and DOT4 fluid inside loses its properties. This means that clutch does not depress 100%. This leads to gears grinding, and ultimately gearbox failure. This happened to a number of cars in poland, to which Honda replyed, that people were driving them to harsh.. one of the guys actually sued Honda, as they presented him with 30k PLN (£6k) bill for new gearbox which failed after 25k km..

From what I’ve seen, it’s only European cars that have indicator on the gearstick side... which is not the best... think about it.. if you have the indicator on the window side, you can lean your arm on the door and / or hold the wheel and still be able to steer and indicate with your window side hand while left hand is on the gearstick.. if you have the indicator on the gear side, you have to take your hand off the gearstick to indicate. Seems strange. Indicator should always be on the window side.

    indicators should be on the right hand side in a right hand drive car. all japanese and korean cars are like this (in australia and new zealand anyway) as japan and korea are also right hand drive countries. especially if the can is manual you can use your indicator and change gear at the same time. euro cars are round the other way because they are mostly left hand drive countries and the manufacturers dont bother swapping the stalks over when they convert them to right hand drive. also almost every 5 speed manual car (also in australia and new zealand, not sure about other euro manufacturers) have reverse to the right and backwards.

    I will grant you that Honda may have been a tad heavy on the styling , but isn’t that part of what makes it fun? Yes , the wing is huge, but no more so than the wing on the WRX STi and has been for more than a decade. It’s fast, we’ll equipped, well built, uses nice materials for the segment ( RS interior is garbage) , and best of all, it’s a Honda. That means that every time you go to your garage and push that red button, it’ll fire up. Can’t say that about RS ( or any Ford for that matter) or the Golf R.
